WHEN IN ROMA……..EAT!

Udine4less_LOGO2So I Wasn’t sure if I was going to much of anything today, seeing how I was up late last night tossing and turning after watching the Patriots somehow give that game away last night to the Colts. I am not sure how many of you watched the game till the end, but WHAT THE BLEEP HAPPENED!!!!!! Ok, had to get that out of my system.

Anyway – There is a new restaurant in town called Roma Pizza and Subs down on the Boulevard. There has been a few restaurants in this spot the last couple of years, but I think that this one has a chance to stick around for awhile. They have a great menu as well as daily specials and soup of the day. The two owners are Pat and Ray, and they seem to fit right in. They have a Family deal that will feed the whole family, and the place is spotless. I am attaching a few deals so that you can give them a try. ENJOY!!!

From Joey – November 13,2008

“Last Night’s First Ever Gloucester Guerilla Art Project was a fantastic event.  There were many faces of the Gloucester Blogging community represented along with friends of GMG and other nortable folks.

I’d like to thank Robert Newton who provided the venue Cape Ann Community Cinema (and I think I forgot to thank publicly last night).  I’d also like to thank all the presenters- Jay Albert from Cape Ann Images, Mark Teiwes who shoots for the Beacon and hosts some of his work at www.MarkTeiwes.com, Chad Carlberg and Emile Doucette along with the rest of the team from www.baitandtackle.biz . Also thanks go out to Kat Valentine from Valentine Design who put Jay Albert’s slide show together and also was of great technical assistance.  If you haven’t already checked out their sites I highly suggest you do.

I’m looking forward to collaborating with these guys in the future to bring even more fun community media presentations to you fine folks.

It was nice to see fellow bloggers Jon Conant, John Hintlian, Miz Lia and Steve B.  Thanks for the support guys.  Also thanks go out to one of my best buddies “The Rabbit”  who took over GMG photo duties so I could meet folks without the encumbrances of the camera(pics coming later) or you could check out Miz Lia’s Blog for a few to hold you over til the Rabbit gets his ass out of bed today.

Thanks also go to Enrico Pallazzo and his lovely wife Kim for showing the love last night along with Damon and Ann Malloy of Neptune’s Harvest Fame (who I got to meet officially last night), Big Daddy Phil Doucette, Kenny and Paula Ryan, Dad’s cousin Gail Guittar, Jay’s family, Sharon Lowe, the fans of GMG, and the other people that I’m suddenly forgetting but showed up including the lovely lady that told me earlier in the week down the dock that she was going to show up and she did with her friend but her name escapes me.

Thanks to anyone else that came but I’m forgetting or didn’t get to meet.

Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I promise we will continue to do these and add more contibutors in the future.  I’d like to have John Hintlian, Sharon Lowe and Steve B participate in the next one (start putting your stuff together).

Ahhhhhhhh, feels good!”

Andrews Point Today

Today’s waves at Andrews Point. These might get a little bigger by Sunday morning if the northeast wind keeps up through the weekend.

Fun Fact: This is the third Friday the 13th this year. Is that rare?  Two in a row in February and March.

Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ the Rhumb Line and Beyond

It’s gonna be a busy week, so, let’s get going.
Thursday nite, it looks like yet another close encounter of the fourth kind, as we welcome back that doodley duo: Mario Perrett and Edd “Duodenum” Scheer. I love playin’ with these guys. Cutie-Pie Mario, who may or may not have posed for Playgirl Magazine, will be honkin’ his sax and testifyin’ to that vocal jive while Ed, our see-thru drummer and vocal ad-libber will be nailin’ down the beat and laughing at everybody within earshot.Looking befuddled and playing his catarrh will be Greg T.,of course, and I, too, on base.

Things deteriorate rapidly this Friday nite at Elliot’s at the Blackburn, with the triumphant return of The Geezerz. Last time there we outdid ourselves and I was forced to change my slacks twice (Just kidding). As you all must know by now, The big G is decomposed of Dave Brown, battin’ cleanup, Dave Mattacks, who carefully locates that arcane spot between tick and tock, Greg Tower, who nullifies the void, and myself, with mop and pail.Showtime is 8:30, and ends when the band disappears.

But, wait! there’s more: If you act now I’ll throw in with no cost to anyone: another jam session! Yes, yes, this Sunday afternoon, from 1 to 4  at Chianti’s in Beverly, there will be a monstro gathering of the troops to raise money for The North Shore Blues Project. This is the brainchild of local filmmaker Henry Ferrini, and we gotta help him out. Tryin’ to get some dough together to spread the word of the blues to kids around here with film and live performances. On tap are the likes of Willie”Loco” Alexander,John Hyde and his blushing bride, Sandi Bedrosian, Mark Retallack, Rik and Al-x Razdan  and many others, myself included.C’mon down!

Finally, for those of you who are underemployed,or just darn lazy, Monday afternoon at the Rose Baker Senior Center got sumfthin for yoo: the Good Old Saltine Jazz Band playin’ yer favorite hits from 1910 on. I play bass with these guys, and it’s great fun.Stop in from 1 to 3 for a taste of the real thing. No cover, no minimum! Ta-Ta!

Great Food and Fun @ Dog Bar

Udine4less_LOGO2

Andy Mulholland opened the doors of the Dog Bar on July 25, 2007 in the quarters of the old White Rainbow Restaurant, between Rogers and Main Streets. Since then, Dog Bar has been serving up delicious dishes and great music. If some of you did not know, Dog Bar takes its name from the breakwater at the entrance to Gloucester Harbor. Andy has put much time and effort in transforming the old White Rainbow into a welcoming and warm atmosphere with creative delicious dishes. With all this said, Dog Bar is todays GMG deal of the day!!!!!

Bob M

The year  this photo was taken was 2006. I love how people figured it out. Some guessed and others (the first was Jerry) went back into our political history and got it that way.

Here are some  of the responses:

Well, it has to be an “even” year “cause Tierney and Verga were running..can’t read the other buttons, and they don’t appear to be Clinton, so I will guess 2000.

July 2006.

One of the stickers is for Deval Patrick and he’s only been involved in one campaign. Also, I think Bob supported Astrid for state rep in 2008 so, it had to be before then.

I’m guessing 2006 since he’s also wearing a Deval Patrick pin.

What to do with your Thanksgiving Leftovers

The holidays are upon us and who has money to throw away?  Not me!  So here are a few ideas how to save money by recycling some of your leftover holiday foods into fun meals for your family. This episode was conceived  after speaking with Julie LaFontaine the Executive Director of the Open Door Food Pantry (pictured above, with Lily).  We were talking about what I could do to help spread the message of the Open Door and we came up with this show.

I went to the grocery store and bought the items that will be included in the Thanksgiving meals that are being donated to the Open Door.  I went home, cooked a traditional turkey dinner including turkey, potatoes, squash, carrots, stuffing, gravy, onions and cranberry sauce.  Also in the basket is a 5 pound bag of apples so I had all of that to work with.   And this is what I came up with.

These are the recipes for Inspired Cooking that is airing on Cape Ann TV tonight at 8:30 and again Friday at 4:30 and Sunday morning at 11:30.

Because you will be using your leftovers (and I don’t know how much you have) and I used mine, the quantities are not exact.  Taste what you are putting together, add dash of something here and a little more of something there and you will come up with a fun cost effective meal for your family.

Use these recipes as guidelines to making something terrific!

Squash Custard Pie

1 refrigerated pie crust.
5-6 cups leftover squash and carrots–whatever you do not have, make up the difference with a can of pumpkin puree–if veggies are a little chunky, that’s ok as long you are ok with texture in your pie.
3 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoon melted butter
½-¾ cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon nutmeg

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Fit crust into deep dish pie plate and crimp edges.

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, cream butter, sugar and extract.  Stir in vegetables and season with cinnamon and nutmeg.

Pour filling in to pie crust and bake pie for 45-55 minutes until filling is set and the blade of a knife, inserted into the center of the pie comes out clean.

Allow to cool before slicing.

Oatmeal topped Apple Crisp–serve with ice cream if you have it!

¼ cup flour
¾ cup brown sugar, divided
2 teaspoons cinnamon, divided
½ teaspoon nutmeg
Pinch salt
5-7 cups peeled apples (whatever you have), peeled, cored and sliced
4 tablespoon melted butter, divided
2 cups old fashioned oats (if you have quick oats, use them!)

Spray an 8” x 8” dish with nonstick spray or coat with butter.  Set aside.

Whisk together flour, ¼ cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and nutmeg and salt and toss mixture with apples.  Pour apples in to prepared pan.

Whisk together oats, melted butter, remaining brown sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over apples.  Bake in preheated oven for 45-55 minutes until oatmeal is crisp and apples are soft.  Enjoy

Turkey Dinner in a Stuffing Muffin

Cooked Turkey, cut into small cubes
Leftover gravy
Leftover stuffing
Leftover cranberry sauce
Leftover mashed potatoes

Spray 12 muffin cups with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

Mix turkey and stuffing in a small bowl.  Press  stuffing into bottom and up sides of cups  to make a crust.  Spoon 2 tablespoons  of the turkey and gravy mixture into the stuffing crust.  Place a small slice or tablespoon of cranberry sauce on top of the turkey  mixture.

Place about ¼ cup mashed potatoes in the palm of your hand and form into a patty.  Place the patty on top of the filled stuffing cup.

Repeat using up the remaining leftovers.

Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until edges are lightly browned.  Remove pan from oven and  allow cups to cool for about 5 minutes before serving.  Remove from pans and serve with additional gravy if desired.

Pulled Turkey Sliders with CranApple Slaw and Crispy Oven Fries

For the sandwiches you will need:

Leftover or fresh small rolls
Turkey, pulled into small pieces
Barbecue sauce

Mix turkey with bbq sauce.  Heat either slowly on the stovetop or covered in the oven at 350 degrees until hot.  Toast the rolls and slather with additional barbeque sauce if desired.  Place warm turkey on the bun and top with the slaw

For the slaw:

Mayonnaise
Leftover cranberry sauce
1 bag cole slaw mix
Apple chunks
Celery seeds, poppy seeds or other spices, if desired
Salt and pepper to taste

In a medium bowl, mix equal amounts cranberry sauce and mayonnaise.  Add seasonings if desired and pour over apple chunks and slaw mix in a large bowl. Stir to combine and add salt and pepper to taste.

For the oven fries:
Uncooked potatoes, cut into steak fry size
Olive oil
Salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  In a large bowl, toss cup potatoes with a few tablespoons olive oil to coat.  Season with salt and pepper to taste.  Also great with a little garlic powder sprinkled on.

Bake for 35-40 minutes until crisp on one side. Flip fries over and cook for an additional 10 minutes until cooked through.  Enjoy!

And last but not least, Lily in her fabulous hat and chef’s coat.  Let me tell you, this kid can cook!  She came in 4th in an apple pie contest at Brooksby Farm on Sunday–there was no youth category–she competed against the adults!  I am so proud of her!
