melanoma, and hear first-hand experiences with young melanoma survivors.
They will also learn about our Your Skin Is In No-Tanning Pledge contest
which offers schools the chance to win up to $1,000 for their prom!
Attendees will receive an invitation to join our Teen Council, a Letter of
Recommendation, Community Service Certificate, gift bag, t-shirt and more.
Could you help spread the word?
I have attached the registration form which also outlines the day.

Joey’s Cape Ann Media Moguls Meeting at Pleasant Street Tea Co. – Video
Meet the Media Exchanging ideas to serve the community.
Last week I had an idea to try to get a bunch of my media buddies together for an impromptu coffee meet up at Pleasant Street Tea and Coffee Company. Those of you who have been following the blog closely may have noticed many posts coming from the space at Pleasant Street. This is not a slight to Gloucester’s other coffee shops like Lone Gull and Cape Ann Coffee which I love and feel play a huge role in the fabric of a community. Pleasant Street happens to have that nice back room which is conducive to meetings and taping interviews so that’s where I’ve been because the dock is just too crazy this time of year to try to tape any segments.
Anyway what I thought would end up as a meeting between four or five of us turned into something much bigger as 90% of my media rolodex showed up.
The idea behind the meet-up was to introduce many people that may have only contacted each other through emails or telephone for a meeting where everyone could share ideas and explore opportunities to help each other and themselves. With the planning and help of Johhny McElhenny and Heather Fraelick we held what I believe to be the first of it’s kind cross media meeting between such a diverse group of Cape Media moguls.
We had the newspaper Editors from The Gloucester Times and Cape Ann Beacon Ray Lamont and Jane Enos. We had Cape Ann TV’s new executive director Donna Gacek. We had international TV producing media giants Gianni and Terry Gallo along with Joe Langhan. Peter Van Ness- Producer and local web genius. Andrea Holbrook- Night editor at The Times. Terry Weber- freelance writer who will soon be releasing her adventure blog to the world. Local PR gurus Heather Fraelick, John McElhenny and Kate Moran. Hybrid Advertising executive Jon Cahill from Bait and Tackle. Local bloggers and writers Heather Atwood, Billy O’Connor and Laura Ciampa, Manny Simoes and your boy Joey of course.
I know I made several connections and came away with some exciting cross promotional opportunities that we will be pursuing to make GMG even better and I’m sure there were other connections that were made in that room.
We are planning to meet monthly but the next one will be at Cape Ann Brewing and in the evening so we can spend more time and have more space.
Here’s a video that Manny put together-
I don’t get it.
My dad taught me to save.
One of his lessons when I was very young was that he would point out a guy that drove a new Mercedes that he knew was in financial trouble and then he pointed out a fisherman that he knew was a saver and drove a beat up old pick up truck.
The point he made was that it didn’t mean anything if you made $125K per year but spent $130K per year. The guy that made $50K but saved $15K was ahead.
That’s why I feel like all of this stimulus and crazy low interest rates is so counter-intuitive to everything my dad taught me.
The incentive to save is gone because banks can’t offer you a decent rate of return because the government just keeps printing money.
They have tried to do away with the business cycle of boom and bust by rewarding companies that make shitty business decisions by bailing them out instead of letting them fail and letting the responsible company that kept a strong balance sheet to buy them at auction prices, and they do the same thing for people that are irresponsible with home purchases.
They place the blame on the lenders. At what point is someone that is signing a mortgage responsible?
I feel like both parties have completely sold out our future and the answer is always to print more money to bail us out.
The reason that people are supposed to invest in stocks is because you expect growth and to be able to participate in profits in the form of dividends but these companies hardly even pretend to pay out decent dividends because investors (myself included) have allowed the upper management of these public companies to pay themselves exorbitant salaries and pass on hardly anything at all back to the small investor.
Can you believe that people were upset that they couldn’t invest in the GM stock offering?
Who the fuck in their right mind wants to invest in a shitty company that makes shitty cars who has already proved that it can’t manage itself and can’t compete worldwide because of the ridiculous amount of money it has to pay it’s union workers and pensions? and yet people are tripping over themselves to throw money at this company????
So all the talking heads on tv say that they want the American consumer to spend-spend- spend, and I’m scratching my head saying why wouldn’t they want people to save- save-save, and possibly be able to take care of themselves when they get older and retire at a reasonable age?
How the hell is anyone supposed to ever retire if they are teaching every generation that it is Un-American to save money?
WHEN DID LOGIC GET TURNED ON IT’S HEAD??????
Am I a crazy person? Is there something I’m missing???
was dad wrong???
God help us all.

Representing in the Hudson Valley
This weekend we got off to to my hometown, Highland New York to visit family and friends. If you ever get to the Hudson Valley, you need to check out the Walkway Over the Hudson. They got $38 Million dollars to turn an unused train bridge that crosses from Highland to Poughkeepsie NY into a walkway. It is a must see!

Two Missing Lab Puppies- Back Home Safe!!!! A GMG Update
Rebecca Borden writes in-
Thanks so much – the pups somehow found their way home last night on their own at 1:30am
All is good.
Two lab pups went missing Monday night after they ran off Good Harbor Beach towards the Inn. They are regulars of the beach but not the neighborhood. One is Black (F-Stella, 1yr) and the other is Choc (M-Chester, 8mo). They have tags and reflective collars.
Many thanks for all your assistance.

Tuffy Says “That’s No Baby Lobster”
Tuffy writes in-
I saw the (lobster) toby brought in on your website. The old timers used to call them snow lobsters but that probably isn’t the real sceintific name for them. They only get that big and they are not the same as the lobsters we are catching. It takes a keen eye to see them and ONLY after a really big blow. The last time Hussey and I spotted a couple on the rail was after 91′ storm. They burrow deep in the mud tunnels. tuf
that was a rare find
