Where’s this?

Where’s this?

I was flipping through my memory banks lately and thought of Gloucester Policeman Keith Trefry. Officer Trefry was one in a million. He’s someone i’ll never forget. I  really don’t know much about him. All I know is when i was young about 12 years old and part of a neighborhood gang. Back then Gloucester “GANGS” played each other in different street sports. The worse thing that i remember was an apple fight.

Keith was always watching out for us kids back then. I remember playing street hockey at Maplewood school. Keith would stop his patrol car and wait for someone to score a goal. He then would flash his blue lights and turn on his siren. That was a big deal for us. I hope he knew how much it meant to us.

I’ll always remember his big smile.

When I came across this memorial for him a few weeks ago i thought what a great tribute to someone i knew who made a positive impact in my life.

Take Care Officer Trefry!

Casting New Show!!!!

Hi, Joey!

I’m a Gloucester girl who now lives in Hollywood, and I’m casting a new TV series. The search is nationwide, but I’d love to get some Gloucester folks on it. Would you mind posting for us? The deadline is TIGHT, so we’d need to hear from folks this week and next week, if they’re interested.

Here’s more information. This is for a major cable network. Please note that we are looking for single dads of boys, but we are also looking for uncles that have taken on the roll of dad for their nephews. The show is focusing on the "father-son dynamic" so we are looking for dads of boys.

NOW CASTING

A SINGLE DAD RAISING SONS

Are you a single dad raising your sons, caught up with juggling work, fun, and fatherhood? Are you are trying your best to be a good father figure to your brood of boys, while dealing with the trials and tribulations of parenting solo? Is your family larger than life, filled with BIG personalities? Then we want to hear from you!

Metal Flowers Media is conducting a nationwide search for a single dad raising his sons for a new docu-series! This new and informative documentary television series will air on a major cable network, and will show viewers exactly what it takes to be a single father to unruly boys.

To be considered for the show, shoot an email to:

randazza@metalflowersmedia.com

Be sure to include a brief description of your family. Tell us about the boys you raise, their ages, and personality. Please tell us where you live and describe the structure of your household. Include photos of as many family members as possible and a phone number where casting can reach you.

Cape Ann Granite Company, Bay View, circa 1890

image

This 5×7 inch glass negative of the Cape Ann Granite Company wharf came from an attic in Lanesville. It shows storage yards and sheds for carving, finishing and polishing granite. A large square rigged ship and a schooner are being loaded with stone at the deepwater end of the wharf in Hodgkins Cove, and the tip of Davis Neck is in the distance. The photo was taken from Mount Misery, which is between Bay View and Lanesville. A small gauge locomotive, named Polyphemus, hauled granite from Blood Ledge Quarry (on Quarry Street) down past Old Pit Quarry to the wharf. Today the wharf is home to the Large Pelagics Research Center, researching migratory species such as tuna, shark, billfish, and sea turtles.

Homie Feathers Wanted

Dear Joey,

I have a friend who is looking for seagull feathers. This fellow is the harpsichord maker who was so helpful to me as I completed the instrument I built for my wife, featured at the recent concert “A Thousand Sunday Mornings” at the Shalin Liu Performance center and so well promoted on GMG. As you may know, harpsichords pluck their strings rather than hit them with hammers like a piano. The ‘plectra’ are now often tiny pieces of Delrin plastic, but historically they were bird quill from ravens, turkeys or other large avifauna.

I’m told it is now molting season for Homie and so I’m hoping some GMG readers will know of beaches or coves were seagull feathers wash up in quantity. If you would kindly post this request perhaps folks will reply to me at gregbover@cbfisk.com or in the comment section.

Many thanks,

Greg

P.S. For those who missed the SRO concert and illustrated talk at Rockport Music, or anyone who’d like to hear it again, we are planning an encore presentation in the Fitz Henry Lane Gallery at the Cape Ann Museum on September 5 th through the good offices of the Gloucester Lyceum. More details to come as we get closer to the date.

Deb Schradieck – Upcoming Guest Artist at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery

Deb is an exceptional truly wonderful watercolor painter.  Don’t miss her exhibit, starting Friday, July 20. Open Reception Saturday, July 21 from 7:00-9:00.

Blackburn Challenge Wrap-Up

Couldn’t ask for better weather. Cloudy and not too hot, wind really of no consequence. I’ll cover the race from most crazy to least crazy, just the highlights. The full spreadsheet of race results go to Cape Ann Rowing Club Web site here.

First up, the Stand Up Paddle. Local Bay Viewer, Gloucester Will Rich put down a time of 3 hours 57 minutes last year. Less than 4 hours all the way around Cape Ann. Standing up. That is crushing it. So this year he cut that down to 3:37:45 on a SUP. That is officially the most crazy.

Next up, the boats that should not be on an ocean with waves. Sliding seat racers, single and doubles as well as some of the high performance kayaks (HPK) look like they would be insane to paddle with any chop. Place rubber duck in any of them and they would flip in 10 seconds. But Daniel Gorriaran and Scott Whitney posted the best time in a sliding seat racing double at 2:19:54. Are you serious? (But not a Blackburn record. 2009 a sliding seat racing double did it in 2:15. Not sure if that is the overall record. A BC historian could comment and I will correct.)

And last but not least, Rubber Duck. Well, totally improving each year. Here are her times the past four years: 2009 DNS “did not start”, she had bronchitis. Quack. 2010; 5:30 there was beer left in the keg, that was fun. 2011; 5:22 Ed, the duck, and I stop at Andrews Point for a beer and also finished before the keg is done. Cool. 2012; 4:49 OK, cutting off enough time to get under 5 hours and I didn’t fall in the water getting out. The best part is Rubber Duck paddled past Jimmy T before the DogBar Breakwater. I am sure it wasn’t because he saw the rubber one pass him but he definitely picked it up in the last two miles in the harbor but the rubbery one held him off finishing just 25 seconds ahead of him. Mister Tarantino was in a Banks Dory that was more than a few hundred pounds heavier than Rubber Duck’s kayak but pwnd is pwned.

Next year Rubber Duck goes under 4:30 heading for under four hours by 2015. Gotta set goals.

As always the Cape Ann Rowing Club did a superb job officiating and taking care of every racer’s needs, even a slow whiny duck. Best pulled pork ever.  See you next year on the Essex River. Time for a nap.

ps. Only 362 days (unconfirmed July 13, 2013) until the 27th Blackburn Challenge. Start your training now!

Decompression Unplugged ~ hot sound, tight harmony

A good way to judge the quality of an electric band is to hear them unplugged.  This video proves that The Bandit Kings are one of Gloucester’s best.  Here they are unplugged on a tiny TV set delivering all the power and energy of their fully electric shows.  Plus Renee and Ann Marie’s harmonies are perfect!

The video above features one of three of their songs from their excellent show (Decompression off their excellent Precious Stones CD — get it here).

You can see the entire show this week on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 beginning Wednesday at 6:3opm.  It also features one of Allen Estes‘ very popular (relatively new) songs, Peace and Harmony, which is not available anywhere for download or on CD.  This is part of our summer reprise of the most requested shows from Local Music Seen with Allen Estes.

If you don’t have cable or you don’t live in Gloucester you can watch the entire show on-line here.

Best of all, you don’t have to wait until Wednesday to see the Bandit Kings.  Go to the Rhumb Line tonight where they host the open jam to get your fix of one of Gloucester’s most distinctive sounds.  And check out the enterprising way they are raising money to make a new record — a very good cause, indeed.  I just donated and can’t wait to hear the new album.
