LUFKIN SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER JANUARY 10TH AT PERIWINKLES RESTAURANT

LUFKIN SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER JANUARY 10TH AT PERIWINKLES RESTAURANT

The Sarah Lufkin Memorial Scholarship Fund will hold its 13th annual benefit fund-raiser on January 10th from 6 to 10 p.m. at Periwinkles Restaurant in Essex.

The Lufkin family will host the event which will be filled with friends, food, music, raffles and a silent auction will be held to benefit the Sarah Lufkin Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The recipient of this year’s award will also be announced during the event. The scholarship was set up shortly after Sarah’s death in 1997 to award money to students who have attended Essex Elementary School and who will be studying in a field that has a direct effect on children.

"We want students who will be working with children to benefit from the scholarship, in essence, continuing what she was unable to do," according to Sarah’s sister, Kim Lufkin. "Sarah returned to Salem State part time after finishing two years of chemotherapy and made the dean’s list that semester."

All food for the evening will be donated by local restaurants and caterers while the staff at Periwinkles will donate their time and energy. Live music will be performed by Joe Militello and there will be a raffle, a silent auction, and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets are $25 each and will be available at the door.

For ticket information or information about how to donate an item please contact Sue Lufkin (978) 768-7122, Laurie Lufkin (978) 985-6532 or Kim Lufkin (978) 853-0845.

Ann Kennedy Finds A Bit Of Gloucester MA In MO

Ann writes-

Hi Joey.  Yesterday I was wandering through a local (Liberty, MO) flea market and from across the room a dusty old postcard caught my eye.  I could hardly believe it when I picked it up and read the caption, "Surf at Eastern Point, Gloucester, Mass."!   I especially love the sentiment written on the back:  "The ocean is wonderful.  I never tire of looking at it."  I couldn’t agree more.
Happy New Year to you and all GMGers!  I look forward to more great coverage of all things Gloucester in 2012!

Amy West Has Some Nice Things To Say

Hi Joey,

My family and I  spend a couple of weeks on the Mill River every August, but during the time I’m on the other side of the cut, I look forward to reading your no bull, honest and upfront blog. I grew up in Pigeon Cove and now live in the Boston area, not too far from Gtown,  but far enough that I can’t take a walk along the back shore everyday.

Happy New Year and looking forward to more Gloucester news in 2012.

Sincerely,

Info from Cathy Mccarthy

Joey.

I know we have a lot of who plungers who have not participated before and want to make sure we all honor our traditions.

My husband ,myself and Amanda Nash started this years ago as Jeff and I were L street Brownies and his friend who brought us to southie passed away, we decided we would do it on the neck.

We have George Sibley do an poem . Its quick ….. We do a count down from 10 and we all plunge in mass. That’s it.

I have got a few calls about what we are about and we are just a great group people who like to celebrate every occasion.

I thought it was important this year to do something to give back and organized the food drive.

Thanks for the plug. Fyi. My husbands name is Jeff Surette (not Mccarthy)

Best,

Cathy Mccarthy

Here’s a video I took way back in June 2008 telling folks where it is-

Erik at Passports Is Offering Up an $8.99 Breakfast Buffet Pre Plunge!  We plan to meet there at 10AM, come eat with us!

If you enter your name here on GMG beforehand, get listed as a pledge to plunge and do it, we will enter your name into a hat and pick one of the GMG listed plungers post plunge for a $100 Azorean Gift card. The List Is Now Closed!

Top Gloucester Stories of 2011- GMG Style

Joey's favorite

Judith Monteferrante Photo

This morning I was contemplating doing a top ten list of the year’s best stories but it always seems so daunting.

But then I read another list which seemed so damn depressing and it didn’t seem to represent to me at all what the top Gloucester stories of 2011 and once we started putting the list together over The Worlds Greatest Coffee Rolls, Ed and I put this list together.

I should note that the depressing list was the one from the Gloucester Daily Times but God bless the Times and what they do because they have the responsibility of reporting the puss and if they weren’t getting paid to do it who would ever want to?

Here’s the Gloucester Daily times version and the inspiration for the GMG one

(note there are no numbers as they are all of different order of importance for different people) We’ll use letters in no specific order.

Christmas Traditions From Tyler Knight

On my walk thru Seine Field this morning I stumbled across someone’s
electric candle lit path from the night before. The dogs and I
followed it, and found that it led just off the trail to a small
opening. Someone had planted a Christmas Tree and adorned it with
battery powered lights. Next to it lay an engraved stone marking the
person’s tree and the date. There were rose petals and the remains of
a little ambience which got me thinking about the ceremony which must
have accompanied this scene. As a former arborist of 12 years, I
completely encourage this kind of Christmas Tree Tradition. Anyway,…

Eileen and Ollie Bolman Have Some Nice Things To Say

Hi Joey

What a surprise to pick up the Sarasota Herald Tribune and see a picture of the "lobsta" trap tree and a story about Rockland, ME and Jonesport, ME copying Gloucester.

Your name was mentioned…you sure do get around.  Also, loved the cover and story about your beautiful girls in Cape Ann magazine.  We live in Venice, FL for the winter and beautiful Gloucester in the summer so anything from home is appreciated including your daily GMG.

“This Is Gloucester” DVD Deposit For Rebuilding The Greasy Pole Complete

DSC00101

To those of you who bought This Is Gloucester DVDs, 5% of sales went to the Rebuild the Greasy Pole Fund.  There are a few people who haven’t paid for theirs but I included the 5% for those sales even though the dough didn’t come in just to be done with it and have it all off my plate and enjoy the holiday.

The last DVD’s went in the mail this morning and I’d like to extend a huge thanks to the nice lady at The Gloucester Post Office on Dale Avenue who was very helpful in giving me suggestions and super patient with me at the counter.  They are very pleasant at the Post Office even in the heart of the shipping season.

You can still donate if you would like to rebuilding the Greasy Pole.  Anyone  looking to donate to the restoration can send a check to Greasy Pole Fund, care of Cape Ann Savings Bank, 19 Main St., Gloucester 01930, or designate the check for the Greasy Pole Fund and send it to the St. Peter’s Fiesta Committee, P.O. Box 3105, Gloucester, 01930.

Ralph Bates, of Manchester, Heats Things Up at The Open Door

image

Julie LaFontaine writes-

Hi Joey,
I am excited to share some news with you and the GMG readers! The Open Door received a generous donation of $8.000 from Ralph Bates, of Manchester, to replace and and install a double-convection oven for the Community Meals kitchen. The oven is a Turbofan Convection oven that will speed up cooking times in the kitchen and make meal time more efficient.

This generous gift came at a time when the ovens that had served the kitchen for more than fifteen years finally gave out.
"Ralph Bates has a quick wit and a heart of gold," said Julie LaFontaine, "Through the years, he has shown up just when we needed him most."
Over the years Ralph Bates has also provided a commercial refrigerator and a gas range for The Open Door’s kitchen. More than 40 groups from the community use the kitchen each year between 15,000 and 18,000 meals are prepared in the kitchen each year to guests needing food and companionship.
Dressed in a Red Sox hat and jacket, Ralph Bates joked as he posed for his photo between Kenn Taber, the Community Meals manager, and Julie LaFontaine, executive director, but he was serious when he said, "It just makes me feel good to know I am helping others."

The mission of The Open Door is to alleviate the impact of hunger in our community. We use practical strategies to connect people to good food, to advocate on behalf of those in need, and to engage others in the work of building food security.

Ann Kennedy Has Some Nice Things To Say

Ann Kennedy Writes-

It just keeps getting better…

Hey Joey, I just finished my daily happy hour/blogread, and started to add comments, but realized if I had the time, it would be easy to say something about every post!  I’ve got to say, the coverage of the community’s holiday activities and events, the merchant features and their videos, the restaurant posts and menus, Felicia’s videos, the stellar photography, the great poetry, the informative pieces, and especially the commentary and banter among your own team creates a real gift!  It just seems to be getting better all the time…and I’m just getting more anxious for our next trip out there!  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you, enjoy the party Sat. night, take lots of pictures, and be sure you all get home in one piece!  I have a feeling that event is going to be one very fun time!

Sheila Jones Schrank Has Some Nice Things To Say

Hi Joey,
It is amazing how many "good deeds a day"  Good Morning Gloucester does for Gloucester, Massachusetts.
For residents and anyone touring our beautiful city, faithful upkeeping to your site keeps us all informed of daily news issues here in our hometown, for the merchants and businesses who get to talk about the special varieties of local goods and services (especially for holiday shoppers) gives us a wide variety of choices to select from,  sometimes right from our computers using on-line shopping.

Your there to cover the Santa Parade, the tree lighting, special events all over Cape Ann, the Middle St. Walk and on it goes, one adventure after another.
The video clips actually help me to get to know people.  I plan to visit to buy local gifts, most often I can associate a name with a face, or a face to the artist or the music of the musician.  You and I haven’t met yet, but I hold you very high in my esteem and I just want to "thank you" for your enthusiam and for all your elves taken under your wing, I mean "blog" and your dedication to and pride in your community.  I just love this city.

Best Regards & Happy Holidays,
Sheila Jones Schrank
ps. Those holiday photos of your children are just priceless.

"Field of Dreams" Community Story of Mattos Field

Patti Amaral writes-

Hello Joey, Here is a wonderful story about Mattos field and local artists I know you will love. Great community effort, thanks for all you do.   Patti Amaral Clean City Initiative

Mattos

Field of Dreams

The rock at the top of the hill states: This playground is dedicated to the memory of Joseph S. Mattos Jr. Born Oct. 4, 1899 and killed in action Oct. 5, 1918. Dedicated 1935.

During World War I, Joseph S. Mattos Jr. “died with honor in the service of his country”, just one day after his eighteenth birthday.  World War I officially ended just over a month later (11/11/1918)
Joseph S. Mattos Jr. was probably one of the youngest Gloucester men killed in action during WWI.
The area known as the Joseph Mattos Field or Playground was originally a low-lying natural basin with a brook running through it.  In the 1840s Nathaniel Webster Sr. dammed the brook creating a pond.  In the winter he cut the ice from the pond to supply the fishing fleet.  Around 1900 his son, Nathaniel Webster Jr., sold the business to Cape Pond Ice Co.  In 1924 Cape Pond Ice Co. sold the property to the city for a public recreation area. Ten years later the city built Veterans Memorial School, adjacent to the field.
For the past 30 years Mattos field has hosted The Cape Ann Women’s Softball League. This year the league started a campaign to raise money for new lights for the field that can cost up to $100,000. The CAWSL “Light up Mattos” field campaign has sponsored several local fundraisers to raise money for the lights.
Two years ago the women painted the bleachers with donations from the Building Center. After searching for a local artist to paint “Mattos Field” on the back of the freshly painted bleachers, in an attempt to brighten up the area, local artist Jason Burroughs stepped up and donated his time to paint the new “Mattos Field” mural. Jason and his friend Enza Dimaio spent last weekend painting the mural. Jason has been part of Cape Ann Art Havens Teen Artist Guild for over a year and a half now, which is led by Executive Director Mat Schetne. Jason has shown his work for the last two summers at the Farmers Market, and his most recent showing on October 1, 2011 called “Wet Paint”. He states,” in some ways my form of art is abstract but at the same time its got an urban feel to it, I pretty much have no boundaries to define my artwork”. Jason attended Veterans Memorial School and played at the field throughout his youth. “Painting the Mattos Field Mural meant a lot to me because when I went to Veterans Memorial School, I always remember the ugly bleachers in the corner of the field that we were not allowed to go near (because of their unkempt condition). I think painting the mural brightened up the bleachers and made it look a lot more inviting. I’m glad to say that I did something for my city.”

Enza Dimaio worked with Jason on the mural too. She is a local girl who played softball for the Raiders at Mattos field for many years. She doesn’t consider herself an artist, but when I saw her down the field helping Jason, I could tell she truly enjoys the work. Enza is happy to be giving back to the local field that she played on in her youth as well.

Two young local residents giving back to their community through what they love to do, Paint.

Sold Out Again- Thank You GMG Community

Well the first batch of 100 sold out in three days so I reordered 50 and am keeping 10 for myself.  I’m not going to take any more orders but I have a few (6 or so) that I’ll keep for folks if they want to pick them up here at the dock- first come first served.

TO CLARIFY ALL OF THE DVD’s are THE SAME none of them in the first or second batch have Saturday Greasy Pole or The Why I Love Gloucester Interviews.  If I order another batch the new batch won’t have those chapters in the either.

If enough people write in on the comments on this post that they wanted to buy some I’ll consider putting in an order for another 50.

I want to thank all the folks that ordered them and despite my mess up of sending in the wrong master copy to the duplicator and the DVD missing those two chapters (out of 21) we actually sold a record number yesterday and after contacting some folks about the mess up we didn’t have a single person cancel their order.

I still believe that this DVD is unlike anything ever produced that captures so much of the essence of Gloucester despite it missing the Saturday Greasy Pole (it still has the Friday 2011 Greasy Pole).

Here is a preview of the opening chapter featuring background music from Dan King put to a slide show of my favorite Gloucester at Dawn Photos in widescreen format-

I’m taking the order form down as well so if you didn’t order one you can let me know that you intended to and I may place another order if there is enough interest on Monday.

Here’s the details from yesterday:

The DVD is still awesome but thought I should let people know about it.  If the reason you bought one was because out of the 21 Chapters those two were critical to your decision to purchase one I will issue you a refund before I ship them.

They look great and I’m thrilled with the results of how they play and Beth Swan’s cover arrangement, I just must have slipped one of the test DVD’s into the envelope when it went to the duplication company.  It still has the Friday Greasy Pole, the mutant lobsters, the Novenas, The Gloucester at Dawn Video with Dan King’s music to it, The Good Harbor Zen videos, Down in The Fish Hold of The Captain Domenic, and more.

Just thought I’d let y’all know before I ship them though in case that was why you bought one.

I’ll be writing a check out for $132 for the Greasy Pole rebuilding fund.  We ordered 150 total DVD’s, I’m keeping 10 for myself and 8 DVD’s were given as extras when people ordered 5 and got one free and one person who ordered 10 and got two free and I assume the 6 extra DVD’s that are unsold will sell so I added them into the total as if they were sold and paid for.

joey – here’s a few photos from the cape ann museum archives dating from november 1946.  they were taken by norman swett, a bridgetender at the cut bridge, who was also a very active and accomplished free-lance photographer.  the pix were donated to the museum about 10 years ago by jane douglas, widow of one of the steeplejacks in the group photo (thomas douglas, 3rd from left in back row).  hope nobody gets queasy looking at these guys doing their work like it was nothing special.  if anybody has any ideas on the reason for the rebuild, i’d love to hear them.  happy t-day!  infamous.

Just one more in a long list of contributions to GMG from our FOB Fred.  If you haven’t figured out by now the vast number of treasures located in the archives which are OPEN TO THE PUBLIC (this means you) then god help you!

You have got to get your ass down there and a crappy rainy day like today would be the perfect day to do so!  Say hey to Fred down in the archives and ask them to look something up for you if there is something from Gloucester’s past that interests you.  they get off on that kind of stuff.
