Eleanor White Has Some Nice Things To Say

Dear Good Morning Gloucester:  Learned about this site just a short time ago from a dear friend, and former resident of Gloucester, here in the Monterey Bay area.  I’m hooked on this publication now,  and can’t wait for your publication to hit my mailbox daily.

I grew up in North Andover, Mass and spent many summers with a dear friend and her family in Wingaersheek Beach.  Can’t stop thinking about the great times I spent there.

Is the Paper House still standing!!!  Oh, how I loved that tour 🙂

Seeing the photos and reading the stories brings me back and makes me smile.

Thank you for your publication and reminding me how beautiful life was in paradise.

Judy Beavers Has Some Nice Things To Say

Hi Joey,
Been thinking a lot about Mass & Gloucester / North Shore, since a holiday visit to our son & his family in NJ.  Part of that visit included several visits to NY city — or as the inhabitants like to call it, the Big Apple.
Nothing against anyone who lives in, has lived in, or loves NY ….. but ……. I remain firmly a New Englander — proud of Massachusetts, our people, who & what we are, what we do, & all that we stand for.
There IS ‘no place like home’.
In NY, people readily pushed past, over, & around anyone in their way, including small children. No one was friendly.
Plus, don’t even begin to tell me that Boston drivers are bad or discourteous drivers.  NY city wins that title, hands-down.
The visit was good, being with family.  However, the trips to downtown NY (not our 1st by any means), only served to remind us how much we love ‘home’.
In our opinion, we have it ‘all’ right here…. far & above anywhere.
The people of Mass, & especially our beloved North Shore, have no comparison.  They are ‘simply the best’, & so is Mass!
Happy New Year to you & all the GMG readers.
Stay safe in the snow!
Judy & family

Start New Years Eve by helping to send Rockport High Band, Chorus & Orchestra students on a concert tour of Ireland and take home a rock star’s autograph

New Years Rockport Eve has so much music that trying to decide what to see will become your first decision of the 2014.  Check out the complete up-to-date music schedule here (this lists more shows than you’ll find on their website).

But before you even look at the schedule, check out this video & press release from Noreen Vincent about the amazing silent auction featuring instruments & sheet music autographed by Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, Aerosmith, Bob Dylan & the Eagles — all to support a program led by RHS Orchestra Director and local music star, Nathan Cohen:

Kick off New Year’s Eve with a Music and Silent Auction Fundraiser at the Shalin Liu Performance Center, Tuesday, December 31st from 3:30pm – 5:00pm.

There will be music of many genres, including a lively session of traditional Irish music performed by the Rockport High School students, faculty members and surprise guests. The Cape Ann Contra Dance Band will be joining the event for a live dance.

Silent auction & raffle items include instruments autographed by Taylor Swift and Paul McCartney, sheet music and albums autographed by Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, and The Eagles, autographed drawings by Seth McFarland and Charles Schultz, circus lessons, lobsters, Celtics tickets, a summer weekend rental in Rockport, a pair of concert tickets at the Shalin Liu Center, a a three-day trip to Paris, and much more. The celebration will end at 5:00 p.m. – in time for Rockport’s New Year’s Rockport Eve festivities, which begin at 6:00 p.m.

Proceeds will help fund the Rockport High School Band, Chorus, and Orchestra’s Concert Tour of Ireland in April of 2014. The students will travel to Ireland to engage in the musical culture, study with some of Ireland’s most renowned musicians, and to perform at some of the country’s finest venues. Students will visit Limerick, Galway, Dublin, and Cork, and will work both with classical musicians and traditional Irish musicians and dancers. The fundraising efforts are critical in keeping the cost of participating in this tour affordable to all students.

New York City Bans Styrofoam Food Containers

Center for Oceanic Awareness, Research and Education | December 20, 2013 12:47

The Center for Oceanic Awareness, Research and Education (COARE), applauds the New York City Council for its decision yesterday to ban food service expanded polystyrene (EPS) within city limits. EPS is commonly referred to as “styrofoam.”

for the entire article read here-

New York City Bans Styrofoam Food Containers

This has got to be looked at as a positive IMO.  I wouldn’t care if the coffee costs an extra nickel a cup in the name of getting more styrofoam off the streets and into our oceans.

Good on NYC.

I like this move.

How bout you?

Thank you to Musicians, Sponsors, Volunteers & Fans for a magical solstice

WinterSolsticeSm_FlyWhat a gift it is to live in a community full of tremendously talented musicians, who can bring world-class music to one of Gloucester’s most treasured spaces.

All the performers were at the top of their game last night and, based on their level of talent, they could have brought giant egos with them.

But they chose to leave their egos at the door and collaborate at the highest level of professionalism in order to lift a packed house at Gloucester’s UU Church to a level of musical joy that many said they hadn’t felt in years.

Bravo!

Thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers and Cape Ann TV crew who helped to bring The Cape Ann Winter Solstice Concert to life.

Thanks, most of all, to everyone who came out to support our local music treasures and help restore the Meetinghouse so it can become a premier listening venue for dozens of major musical events  every year.

Based on last night’s success, it’s safe to say we’ll be doing this again and again and again.  Stay tuned …

Joey,

The North Shore United Way has a new resource for residents and an event to promote it. We want to invite you to share this great new site, write about it, link to it…..  While the Open Houses are currently scheduled for Beverly, the site exists to connect people from across the North Shore and Cape Ann with local opportunities, including many in Gloucester.  I am available to provide more information.  See attached and a summarized version is below.

More than a quarter of all Americans Volunteer. Whether you want to meet new people, bulk up your resume, or simply give back to your community, volunteering is as rewarding as it is important.  Local organizations need your help to mentor youth, stock food pantries, collect books, design websites, and many other kinds of activities. To help more people get involved, the North Shore United Way has launched the North Shore Volunteer Hub, a new website that helps you find and easily connect with local organizations and meaningful volunteer opportunities.

You can find it at nsuw.org or by attending an Open House for this exciting new resource.

Resolved to Care!  Open House Series for the North Shore Volunteer Hub

EVERY Friday afternoon in January from 12:00 to 5:00

North Shore United Way office, 248 Cabot Street in Beverly

Short demonstrations of the website will be done on the half hour; guests can meet the people behind the site and get some help connecting with meaningful local opportunities to volunteer.

Long Time FOB Jim Hughes Has Some Nice Things To Say

Hi Joey,

We have never met but I’ve followed your blog since, I believe it was late 2007, it was a few months after Good Morning Gloucester came on line. Some friends had spent a day in Gloucester and had taken a picture of a sign in Cripple Cove that was hanging on a buoy. The picture did not come out well and they talked so much about what the sign said that I I had to find out just what it was. I talked to the editor at The Gloucester Times and he recommended I contact you since you were close to the buoy. I opened your blog and became so fascinated with your stories about Jinglenuts, Homey, Sista Felicia, Ed Collard, David Cox and his sport pictures Sean’s antics around the dock, your trips to the Caribbean and Naples  and more, that it became a morning ritual to read Pauly  Walnuts, Debbi, Marty’s Black and White creations, Friar Mathews pictures and quotes, and so on. I feel like I’ve lived in Gloucester for a long time and some day hopefully the winds will blow me north far enough to visit there.

Now the point of this babbling, today I was in the office of Rich Jones Electric on Marco Island (17 miles south of Naples) and two customers walked in and saw the sailboats on the wall and started talking about old sailing vessels. The word Gloucester was dropped here and there and I asked “did I hear Gloucester mentioned”, Yes! they said, I could not help but ask if they had heard of Joey Ciaramitaro, “Joey, ” one said, “I’m his Uncle Bill, or rather his partners Uncle But everyone calls me Uncle Bill”. Bill Chambers.  A connection was made with Gloucester. Uncle Bill talked about your grandfather and the Nazis. I had read about it in your blog but wanted to hear his version(ha).  He talked about your lobsters and your Mother and Father and how great you and your cousin are, don’t get a swelled head, I know that no body could be as great as Uncle Bill said you are(ha). This makes the hope to visit Gloucester even stronger, when that day comes I’ll stop by and say Hay.

Keep up the good work. Long may GMG live!!

The Toy Drive is Still On

Yesterday’s marathon toy drive led by Senator Bruce Tarr and broadcast on North Shore 104.9 brought in lots of toys and cash donations, but it’s not over yet.  If you missed the opportunity to donate a toy yesterday, you can drop one off at any of the collection spots through next Friday, December 20.  See a list of collection spots here.

Here’s a wonderful PSA created by Cape Ann TV featuring local budding movie stars!

Win Dinner & A Show with Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr and help needy kids!

Senator Bruce Tarr

If you’re listening to North Shore 104.9 today, you know they’re broadcasting Senator Bruce Tarr’s North Shore Toy Drive live until 6pm and you’ll hear Senator Tarr mention a “Once in a lifetime” auction on air.  We don’t want people who can’t have the radio on to miss out, so here’s the scoop:

This Sunday, Senator Tarr is taking 4 people as his guests to the Larcom Theatre at 2pm for Henri Smith New Orleans Christmas Matinee followed by dinner at Teresa’s Prime (the new steakhouse in North Reading).

You can bid on this “once in a lifetime opportunity” by sending an email to northshoretoydrive@yahoo.com with your name, phone number and your bid.

Senator Tarr will be updating the bid price live on the radio during the day — and you can continue bidding during the day tomorrow too.  The winning bid will be announced tomorrow (FRI) at 5pm.  The money will be donated to the winner’s local Toy Drive charity.

Gloucester Schooner Festival awarded four scholarships to Cape Ann organizations who foster greater knowledge and appreciation of Cape Ann’s coastal waters

On Tuesday, December 3rd at Maritime Gloucester, the Gloucester Schooner Festival awarded four scholarships to Cape Ann organizations who foster greater knowledge and appreciation of Cape Ann’s coastal waters by providing opportunities for young people to sail, row or otherwise become immersed in our ocean environment. The 2013 Gloucester Schooner Festival Awards were given to adults and student representatives from GHS Sailing, Cape Ann YMCA, the Gloucester Museum School and Sea Scout Ship 5. Checks for $1,000 were presented to each organization. The grants are made available through the generosity of the corporate sponsors of the Schooner Festival, as well as raffle and merchandise sales.

Got one of these lying around?

When local New Orleans transplant, Henri Smith, and his band take the stage Saturday and Sunday at the Larcom Theatre in Beverly, they won’t be the only people in the house with musical instruments.

That’s because members of the audience are bringing instruments to donate to The Musary — a free music lending library “no strings attached” serving Boston’s North Shore, including Cape Ann.

Everyone who brings an instrument to donate will be entered to win a door prize at intermission. The door prizes we have now are:

One night stay at Salem Hawthorne Hotel plus $50 gift certificate for Nathaniel’s (their restaurant).

Spa Day at Maison Esthetique Christiane Bourque Spa in Danvers ($400 value)

Plus a chance to have your Christmas shopping paid for with the 50/50 Raffle!

The Musary is a 501(c)3 on-profit organization that that works to motivate, cultivate and inspire people, especially young people, in our community to get involved in music. It is the Musary’s goal to lend musical instruments to anyone in need, “No Strings Attached.” To learn more about The Musary, borrow an instrument or donate, visit their website.

There’s plenty of time to dig around in your attic or basement and find that no-longer-used instrument so you can put it to good use again this weekend.  And who knows, you might just win something — but even if you don’t win, you’ll know you helped a young person appreciate the power of music, who might not otherwise be able to do so.  And that will feel great!  There are still some seats left for Henri Smith New Orleans Christmas Concert on Saturday at 7:30pm (get them here) — and excellent seats left for the Sunday Matinee at 2pm (get them here).

Judy Beavers (Not Her Stage Name) Has Some Nice Things To Say About Shopping In Gloucester

We headed to Gloucester this afternoon, from Salem where we live, to do a bit of Christmas shopping.

As we neared Exit 14, there were several trees along the side of the road, which someone has decorated for the holidays.  Whomever took the time, thanks!  Such a great surprise.

As always, Gloucester shopping didn’t disappoint: the Island art & hobby shop, Local Colors, Toodleloos ….  all of Main St., always a pleasure.  Among the many reasons, just one of why we love Gloucester.

The Awesome Foundation Comes to Gloucester

Hi Joey- I’m sure you are aware of this group but maybe not, but I’m proud to say I’m the newest Trustee of Awesome Gloucester and attended my first meeting last night at the Gloucester House.   Attached please find a press release about Awesome Gloucester.  There are no names of the 20 Trustees listed, honestly I haven’t met all the other 19 yet, but I was excited by the energy, enthusiasm and commitment to Gloucester that I felt in the room last night!  Simply Awesome.  I hope you will run something so that everyone knows that there is seed money available for all things that make Gloucester Awesome- no strings attached- and the application process is simple.

Happy Holidays,

Grace Giambanco Numerosi

The Awesome Foundation Comes to Gloucester

Anyone who lives in Gloucester knows how awesome this town city is, but few know that a philanthropic group now exists to make Gloucester even more awesome. The name of this group is – as you might have guessed – Awesome Gloucester.

Awesome Gloucester is a local chapter of the Awesome Foundation, a global “experiment in community philanthropy” committed to giving out $1,000 micro-grants each month.  The group gives “no strings attached” micro-grants to applicants deemed to have the most awesome idea to enhance the community in some positive way.  The local chapter is made up of a board of twenty “trustees of awesome,” all of whom are members of the Gloucester community with an interest in supporting the positive aspirations of others and encouraging a spirit of open innovation in the city.

People of all ages are encouraged to enter project applications for consideration of these monthly micro-grants.  Awesome Gloucester is especially looking to fund projects that may not have any other avenue of funding, including project ideas that may be unconventional.  Though projects can be awesome in almost any way, Awesome Gloucester seeks to fund ideas that will be significantly enhanced with $1000 cash infusion.

The group is also interested in supporting projects that fall into the following categories: (1) Innovation in Marine/Fishing Industry, (2) Preservation of Maritime Culture and Heritage and (3) and Community Appreciation and Togetherness.  Running through each category is a single concern: How is this idea, once implemented, going to make Gloucester more awesome?

To apply, interested teams and people need to fill out a very basic application online:
http://www.awesomefoundation.org/en/chapters/gloucester.  In a nutshell, to apply, applicants need to answer three main questions:

1.    Tell us about yourself.
2.    Tell us about your project.
3.    Tell us how you’ll use the money.

The deadline for applications is the 15th of each month.  From there, the process is pretty simple:  The twenty trustees will review and vote for their top three favorite projects. Then, three finalists will be invited to the Gloucester House restaurant for “Pitch Night,” or what some call “$1000 Thursday.”  (This happens the first Thursday evening of the next month). Next, the applicants each take a turn making their pitch to the trustees who then vote for the project they want to fund.  That night, a winner is announced and given $1,000 in cash on the spot!

The $1,000 micro-grant comes from the pockets of the 20 trustees who each donate $50 a month. As there are no strings attached to the grants, Awesome Gloucester simply wishes each winning applicant the best of luck without placing any demands on them once the money is awarded.  The group simply places faith in the goodness of people participating in the process.

Awesome Gloucester has already had its three successful pitch nights at which it awarded “Glosta Lobster”, Cape Ann Art Haven and Kestrel Educational Adventures each $1000.00 grant!  How cool is that?!
