Another local rising star releases a HOT EP

You might recognize him as Chelsea Berry’s guitarist (see these videos) or Gary Backstrom’s drummer (see this video).  Mike Doyle is a virtuoso on both.  I once asked him which he prefered: drums or guitar.  “Do you have kids?” he replied.  “Yup,” I answered.  “Which one do you like better?”

Well Mike has a new EP and it’s certainly worth getting.  See what he has to say about it:

“The Storm Colors EP” is a 3-track EP of original music, performed by Michael Thomas Doyle and Mike Moschetto at the Office Recording in North Andover. Michael, a multi-instrumentalist, captures an ethereal, but punchy and catchy atmosphere in his debut EP. With the help of Mike Moschetto, engineering and producing the EP, Michael showcases his songwriting and arrangement abilities, as well as his virtuosity in this short-but-sweet recording. “The Storm Colors EP” is available at michaelthomasdoylemusic.bandcamp.com for digital download.

Still time to save money on Rockport Music’s 13-14 season

You’ve heard of season tickets, right?  Over the past few years, theatres and music venues have improved on that concept, offering something they call Flex Subscriptions, which are better than season tickets:

  • You get the best seats.
  • You don’t have to buy a ticket to every concert in the season in order to save money.
  • You can cherry pick the concerts you want to see by selecting from all concerts presented during the entire season.
  • You can exchange one concert for another after you purchase tickets.

As you might expect, Cape Ann’s #1 award-winning music venue, Shalin Liu Performance Center offers Flex Subscriptions, which are now on sale for their 2013-2014 season.  And they’ve added an additional benefit — you don’t pay any processing fee for additional concerts you add to your Flex Subscription.  Plus, at Rockport Music, all you have to do is buy tickets to 4 different concerts to save 10% (see details here).  If you’ve been following our early warning posts, you’ll know that Rockport Music concerts usually sell out.  So check out their season below and go buy your tickets now.  Then you can relax!

Get up by 9am tomorrow to hear Allen Estes on the radio

AureliaDylanAllen
Aurelia Nelson with Allen Estes (R) & his son, Dylan

North Shore 104.9 host Aurelia Nelson interviews Allen Estes on her radio show, “Curtain Up”, tomorrow at 9am.  Aurelia and Allen talk about Gloucester’s exploding local music scene — and Allen’s TV show that promotes it (see here).  (See Allen Estes Videos here.)

Plus they preview major musical events in Gloucester and Cape Ann and you’ll hear some of Allen’s new music.

It’s worth getting up for.  And once you’re up, you can take advantage of the live music starting at 11AM, with new shows starting practically every hour and going on through the wee hours.  Check out the complete music schedule here.

“A Night at the Opera!”

The Arcadian Winds woodwind quintet will present their program “A Night at the Opera!” a celebration of famous arias by Puccini, Verdi and Bizet in addition to their own popular arrangement of Wagner’s “Siegfried Idyll.”  Other works include excerpts from Paquito D’Rivera’s “Aires Tropicales.”   The sound of the woodwind quintet offers a broad range of depth, color and variety of sounds, that lends itself perfectly to these rich vocal works.  The majority of the program will feature arrangements unique to Arcadian Winds, created by clarinetist and longtime Arcadian Winds member, Mark Miller.

Program:

Brindisi from La Traviata  Verdi [1813–1901]/arr. M. Miller

Sigfried Idyll    Wagner [1813–1883]/trans. M. Miller

ARCADIAN WINDS was founded at Boston University in 1987 as a woodwind trio consisting of flute, clarinet, and bassoon. The ensemble expanded to a wind quintet in 1989 and has since premiered almost 50 new works and championed many others. As recipients of Chamber Music America’s “Residency Partnership Grant” in 2004, the Arcadian Winds provided a year-long intensive chamber music experience for students in the Boston Public Schools, culminating in a performance of a commissioned piece by Daniel Pinkham for the programs’ top wind players.  With a strong commitment to education, the group continues to bring chamber and contemporary music into the public, private and community schools in the Boston Area including ongoing work as faculty with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Don’t even think about the weather — just get out and have fun tonight!

HarborLoopCrowdJust because you can get the weather on your phone doesn’t mean the prediction has gotten any better.  As of right now, tonight’s Harbor Loop Concert is cancelled due to bad weather.  It was raining when we talked to Bradley Royds about this, but the sun is coming out now.  You just never know what’s going to happen, so be sure to check the local live music listings for last minute changes.

Gloucester weather may be unpredictable, but here’s a prediction you can count on: You can go out tonight — every night — and have a great time without even knowing what the weather will be.  This is the advantage of living in a town with a vibrant music, entertainment & cultural scene —  something Patty Hecht pointed out at last night’s Downtown Visioning Meeting at City Hall (see Joey’s interview with Patty @ 191 Main St. here).

So don’t fret about it.  Just go downtown.  If the weather cooperates, you can sit, eat and be entertained outside.  If not, you can stroll around in the rain (kinda fun in the summer) and pop in and out of all the restaurants offering music until the wee hours of tomorrow morning (see schedule here).   And don’t forget to be grateful that you live here.

Great news! Ricky “King” Russell is jumping’ into the pool with us. Along with Cheryl Arena and Ed Scheer. Don’t miss it! Tonight at The Rhumb Line 8:30pm

Dave says,

It was a much needed week off. Finally had time for some maintenance and a new sleeve job.Had my brakes removed, too. Now we’re back with a great lineup for the rest of the summer.
So, let’s welcome back Ms. Cheryl Arena, that shit-kickin’ former Texass gal with the big harp and the bigger repertoire. She’s comin’ so look out. Try not to spill your drink while she regales you with her own upbeat blend of the finest toons that money can’t buy. Furthermore, Mr. Edd Scheer, that baddie of the eggbeaters will be providing the 60 cycle hum that’ll  thrill you to the bottom of your big toe. We’re gonna make him sing a lot, keep him on his other toes. As of yet, the dragnet hasn’t picked up a suitable suspect for the guitar chair, but rest assured, he’ll be a homunculus where it counts.  Bring your glutes, and  a couple Ace bandages. Remember: we hit at 8:30. Thursday 7.11.2013
