“He who does not eat cheese, will go mad.”
This French proverb is printed on T Shirts and hangs over the door at The Cave — 44 Main St. For some reason, it took Vickie and me 3 weeks to get there, but we finally made it yesterday and boy are we glad we did. Then we took our bounty to a friend’s house. The best way to enjoy good food is with good friends, each being enhanced by the other. Check out the video to see what we got and how it tasted.
Laura, who owns The Cave, tells me she’s got a 3 year lease and they will be open year round. Sounds like a plan to me. Vickie and I will be in again soon.
Just as The Cave has something for every palate, tonight there’s music for every possible taste on Cape Ann from string quartet to bluegrass to rock, soul, reggae, pop, New Orleans jazz, blues, metal, singer/songwriters — you name it. Don’t stay home. Check the live music lineup and get out on the town!

What a fantastic start to The Harbor Loop Concert Series 2012. Opening with Inge Berge,Vincent Briguglio, Leo Ciaramitaro and James Buhrendorf. Groove was off the wall as always, with Mark Pelosi, Vincent Briguglio, Jeff Arnold, Brian O’Connor, Dennis Monagle and James Buhrendorf sitting in. So much fun, people smiling, dancing, children and aldults hoola hooping, blowing bubbles, sun shining and a sweet breeze….What a great job Frank Hawks and John Silvera did with that sound!
Thank you Bradley Royds for heading this up.

38 artists at 21 venues this weekend. How do you choose?
No, you can’t see them all. You’re just gonna have to pick your favorites. We can help. First, you can see a complete live music lineup here. And if you’re not sure who you might like, you can see 15 Artists of the week in over 75 videos too.
Here are a very few suggestions in various genres (this is NOT an exhaustive list of who you might enjoy — see that here)
If you’ve never seen rocker Ned and the Big Babies, you should catch them tonight at the Rhumb Line. You’ll be dancin’ — believe me.
If you missed The Runaround Sound high energy ska, reggae, punk-rock band at the Boulevard on July 3, you can catch them tonight at Capt Carlo’s and tomorrow at the Rhumb Line. You’ll get a workout if you go to both shows, so no need to go to the gym this weekend.
If you like New Orleans Jazz & Blues and you missed Henri Smith opening for Aaron Neville on June 30, you can catch him at the Brew Pub on Saturday (see Henri Smith videos here) Henri is also opening the Gloucester Blues Festival on August 11.
Also on Saturday is the latest in T Max’s concert series at the Dog Bar. This time he mixes bluegrass from Tom Eaton & Pick 3 with singer/songwriter Jon Waterman and his own style that’s a must-see but impossible to peg.
On Sunday music begins at 10:30am at Seaward Inn in Rockport and continues all day with two free outdoor concerts: Michael O’Leary’s Celtic music at Halibut Point State Park at 2:30 and the Compaq Big Band at Stage Fort Park at 7pm.
Remember this a very small list of a few highlights. Check all shows before you decide where to go.
Sea Garden Restaurant at Seaward Inn to host Jay and Abby Michaels this Sunday.

Madfish is trying something new ~ Just Like Newman July 21st 5-8pm
Exciting new date for JLN. On Saturday, July 21st from 5pm to 8pm, we’ll be playing an afternoon gig at one of our favorite places to hang on the water – Madfish Grill! We are psyched about this one and hope you’ll come join us for some late afternoon / early evening fun.
Thursday night blues party @ The Rhumb Line to host Ricky “King” Russell
Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party
Dave Says,
It’s that time again! We’re gathering all the troops to pay obeisance to the king of the Boston blues Scene: Mr. Ricky “King” Russell. Approved by Pope John Paul Ringo! Everytime he plays here we gotta call in a hazmat team! I’m oiling down my bass in preparation for the great sleazy, cheesy, wheezy effluvium that’s gonna emanate from the throbbing stage. Master of the gritar, this guy will chase you back under your own personal rock where it won’t be safe to come out for weeks! You’ll see!
Unfortunately , his doppleganger on drums, Mr. Ed Scheer, is down with a bad case of St. Vitus dance, and coupled with unsuccessful cosmetic weenis surgery, won’t be able to hit a stick for several weeks. So a surprise drummer is in the pipeline, trying desperately to get out! Fortunately Mr. Greg T. and myself will be there, litter in tow, to assist in medical emergencies. The bombing will start in 5 minutes….
Something Big that Chronicle Missed
Gloucester has been featured on Chronicle once again and this time they focus on tourism, art, fishing & Fiesta — mostly the greasy pole. And while the show sheds a fairly good light on Gloucester, it misses one of the our City’s main attractions — Gloucester’s burgeoning music scene (see tonight’s live music lineup here).
That’s why we’re so lucky to have lured T Max here — publisher of The Noise (New England’s longest running music magazine). The new issue features stories about music on Cape Ann as well as music on that shark-infested cape named after a fish. (On the web, the stories are after the features on Brad Byrd from Cape Ann and The Parkington Sisters from Cape Cod).
I was going to thank T Max for the honor of being chosen to write the story about Cape Ann (read it here), but instead I’ll complain that what I had feared has come to pass: good musicians whom I neglected to mention are asking me why I left them out. There’s no good answer to that question. My only excuse is that with limited space and time to write I simply couldn’t include everyone who’s good. Lame, isn’t it. Sorry.
Perhaps the next Chronicle story on Gloucester will include at least one segment on Gloucester’s music. I keep that hope alive given that they referred to Fiesta as Gloucester’s own Mardi Gras, which is, of course, a musical metaphor.
Henry Ferrini wants to let you know what’s happening @ Maritime Gloucester on August 4th.

Tickets also available at Maritime Gloucester store on Harbor loop.
Here is a video i did here about the event.
Here’s a blurb about the band.
Lamine Toure and Group Saloum
This concert is a benefit for Maritime Gloucester and the North Shore Jazz Project.
Last year Lamine and his band had everyone dancing on the docks. The North Shore Jazz Project mission is to create an environment on the North Shore where music education, performance and appreciation can flourish and Gloucester Maritime needs no introduction. Lamine Toure comes from a family of Griot’s in Senegal. He teaches African drumming at MIT in Cambridge, Ma. Don’t miss the waterfront dance party of the season.

ANTONIO GENTILE BANDSTAND CONCERTS BEGIN ON JULY 8
NORTH SHORE ACAPPELLA TO OPEN SEASON
North Shore Acappella performs Sunday, July 8, 2012, at 7pm, in the opening concert of the 2012 Antonio Gentile Bandstand Summer Concert Series at Stage Fort Park. The rain date for the concert is Wednesday, July 11. The concerts will be held for eight weeks, ending with the Cape Ann Big Band on August 26. To access the season schedule, visit www.davidlbenjamin.com
Concert Series Director David Benjamin promises an exciting season with three new groups joining in on the bandstand stage. “We’re mixing it up a little to add some new sounds to our summer nights” says Benjamin. “This year we introduce the Good Old Salty Jazz Band in a tandem concert with Honky Tonk Women. We have also added Allen Estes with Old Cold Tater and we are bringing the exciting Cape Ann Big Band in for our final concert. This should be a lot of fun”.
The opening concert features North Shore Acappella who became a national sensation competing in last summer’s ‘The Sing-Off, on the NBC. We welcome them and their followers back to Stage Fort Park. The concert series is funded by Corporate and Individual donations. “We had a tough goal for fundraising but our loyal audience and friends in the business community came through with most of what we needed this year. We can still use help” says Benjamin. Donations can be mailed to Cape Ann Community Band, C/o David Benjamin, 32 Revere Street, Gloucester, MA 01930. COMMUNITY BAND PLAYERS START REHEARSALS
The Cape Ann Community Band Presents “Features & Soloists”
Sunday, August 19, 2012, at the Antonio Gentile Bandstand
Stage Fort Park, Gloucester, 7pm, (Rain date Wednesday, August 22, 7pm)
David Benjamin, Director of the Cape Ann Community Band invites you to participate in an exciting program for concert band. The band will rehearse for six weeks beginning on Monday, July 9, at 7pm at the Gloucester American Legion Hall, 2 Washington St., Gloucester.
We will prepare a concert of Solos and Section Features with popular music in many styles. We ask that players commit to at least four of our six rehearsals, including the final two rehearsals on August 6 and 13. Our program is geared toward young and more experienced players. Families are encouraged to participate as well as former school band classmates. The music represents varying levels of ability; there’s something for everyone. Players will need their own instruments. Percussion equipment and stands are provided.
Once again the band is proudly sponsored by Bank Gloucester. Patrick Thorpe, bank president, says “We love this group. They represent the whole of our Cape Ann Community and they always play a terrific program. We’re glad to help.”
Director Benjamin echoes Thorpe’s excitement. “We’ve always had a lot of fun preparing our concerts. It’s a supportive mood at our rehearsals. Everyone is learning and enjoying the company of fellow musicians.”

Coyote Kolb @ MinglewoodAtLat43 9:00-12:00……Sweet!
I kind of feel like a kid let loose in a candy store knowing Coyote Kolb is coming to town tomorrow night. Also, that feeling as a child on Christmas eve, even. I get like that when I get to see what I consider a great band. So looking forward to seeing these guys. Don’t know if they will ever be back in town again. Come on out to see them 9:00 @ MinglewoodTavern AtLat. Check out the links and see what others have to say.
Coyote Kolb

“Rubedo”
Friday night Coyote Kolb is coming to town. They will be MinglewoodTavern AtLat I can hardly believe it. The first and only time I got to see these guys was with three other bands one of whom I am hooked on big time. The Ten Foot Polecats….well thanks to them I met this band…went totally crazy and bought their CD right on the spot. I have listened to it over and over. I like their style, the way they look and most of all their sound. It’s all so different….rockin, Americana, country fried, sorrowful harmonic, and a wicked rockin blues effect.
I dedicate Royal Bug to my eldest grandson. When he hears it he will know why.
http://coyotekolb.bandcamp.com/track/royal-bug
Check em out. I like what these guys have to say about Coyote Kolb.
“There’s a deep-country vibe to Coyote Kolb’s sound, but they also rock fuzzed-out dirges like Neil Young has excelled at over the years. ” -CheapThrillsBoston
“an awesome blend of sound that oscillates between blues, folk, and what I would describe as roadhouse rock n’ roll.” -Prairie Shack Music
“Pure Rock n Roll Bluesy goodness.” – The Noise -Boston
Life, Liberty & what?
Not “property” as John Locke had written. Nope. Jefferson wrote “the pursuit of Happiness” and the Congress went along with him, even though they made many other edits, much to his chagrin. This was a truly revolutionary idea — and still is.
What’s even more revolutionary (to me anyhow) is that we celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence as our official Independence Day holiday. This is NOT a day on which we won our independence through a battle, or a war, or signed a treaty, or formed a government, or elected anybody. This is the day that our Founders defiantly declared that the Colonies were going to “dissolve the political bands” with Great Britain and become independent states. In short, this is not the day we won any independence through any means other than by saying so on paper. And it meant a certain death sentence for everyone who signed that paper, which was treason. Now that’s brave. Few people today exhibit anything close to this kind of bravery.
But back to happiness. Everybody pursues happiness in different ways. One of mine is through music. So, as promised, here’s the set list for yesterday’s award-winning GMG float featuring almost all local music. (In case you hadn’t guessed, it’s the spectacular local music that makes me happy!)
The list is in alphabetical order by song title and doesn’t necessarily represent the only good local music, just the best local music suitable for a prarade:
Big Chief – Henri Smith
Blind Knowledge – Willie Loco Alexander
Blues Brothers’ Review – Cape Ann Big Band
Fat Belly BBQ – T Max
Gloucester Till The End – Earl & Arch
Goodnight Romeo – KBMG
Let’s Get It Started – Black Eyed Peas (not local, but requested)
Harley Rider – Allen Estes
Love Light – Fly Amero
Madeline – Pete Lindberg
Not With Ya Hands – Allen Estes
On The Dark Side – John Cafferty (performing with Orleans in August)
Reap What You Sow – The Distractions (That’s me on drums)
Red Solo Cup – Toby Keith (not local, but requested)
Samsara – Inge Berge
Stand Up – Tom Hauck
Still The One – Orleans (Fly Amero’s band)
Take Another Look – Bandit Kings
Two Different Paradigms – Ned and the Big Babies
Where’d They Go – Allen Estes (Official Song of Gloucester)
Wire – Will Hunt
You Me and Mary – Chelsea Berry
