Cape Ann Community Cinema Fiesta Weekend

Buona Fiesta!

It’s that time of year again, when our neighborhood in Gloucester’s West End is taken over by elated revelers, Greasy Pole walkers, and the sons and daughters of this humble fishing village coming home for this 5-day holiday. As we share a building with the St. Peter’s Club, where the famous statue resides for the 364 days out of the year when he’s not painting the Fort red-and-green, we have become molto sensible (very sensitive) to the tastes of our Italian members and friends. This is why we have special programming during Fiesta week and Columbus Day weekend.

Is Rockport trying to steal you away from Fiesta?

Generally speaking, I’m not a conspiracy theorist.  But now that we know the N.S.A. is reading our emails and listening to our phone calls, I’ve begun to look at things with a slightly more suspicious eye.

So when I go to the gimmesound live music listings for Cape Ann tomorrow and notice that the first 2 shows are both in Rockport — and both Free, it’s got me wondering, “Just what’s going on here?”  They’ve got David Coffin at Shalin Liu at 1o am.  And they’re not really pushing that show either.  It’s buried on a page featuring a number of community concerts and events.  To look at it you’d think Rockport Music was giving back to the community — being a good citizen.

Brad ByrdBut then I see the Rockport Farmer’s Market has local rock star Brad Byrd performing at 11:30.  Now what’s that all about?  What’s an award-winning indie rock star like Brad Byrd doing at a farmer’s market?  You’re probably gonna say it’s because he’s from Rockport and he likes to give back to the community.  But wait.  Don’t you see a pattern here?  Do see what I’m seeing?

Under the guise of appearing like good citizens, the “good people” of Rockport are really up to no good.  They’re trying to steal the crowds away from Fiesta.  They want you in Rockport early and think they’re gonna keep you all day so you can see Bob Allison on the Grand Piano at the Emerson at 6pm — also free .  Don’t be fooled.  It’s Fiesta.  You live in Gloucester.  Know what I mean?

Going “Bananas” for vintage clothes

Among the many second-hand stores in Gloucester, some are “generalists” (the church and charity-affiliated thrift shops, Main Street Arts and Antiques, etc..) and others are specialized in things like books, music, or clothes. Today we look at one that specializes in vintage clothing and accessories: Bananas (78 Main St)!
_Bananas façadeI have heard from many people that this is the go-to place for vintage clothing, jewelry and accessories for theater productions, but Bananas also sells contemporary clothing. I picked up a nice pair of suspenders here not long ago.

The store hours are 10-5 Monday-Saturday., 11-4 Sunday.  Click here to see a GMG interview with the proprietor, Richard Leonard, from four years ago.  Most of the time when I go in, I see local artist Debbie Clarke behind the counter.  Her beautiful work has been seen on this blog on more than one occasion.

I can’t help but mention that frequent GMG contributor and all-around nice guy Fred Bodin’s gallery is practically next door.  But then again, there are so many cool places and GMG contributors and friends in close proximity downtown, that if I were to list them all, I’d end up making a map of downtown Gloucester… And I mean that!

Lookie Lookie Band performs Latin Bugalu @ The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck ~ 7-10 ~ June 28, 2013

lookie lookie band

https://www.facebook.com/lookie.lookie.theband

Location: The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck

DANCE PARTY! Come hear the hot, groovy sounds of 1960s Latin Bugalu from Boston-based Lookie Lookie, Friday June 28, 7-10 at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, $10. Some of Boston’s best musicians and a groove guaranteed to make you smile!

A brand new band playing Latin Bugalu music, Lookie Lookie is named for a song by Ricardo Ray. The music of Ray and Joe Cuba form the core repertoire, with a healthy dose of African Latin music, including Soukous.Lookie Lookie is the brainchild of bassist Chris Maclachlan, best known for his work in the seminal Boston punk band Human Sexual Response.Maclachlan has an abiding love for Latin Bugalu, a crossover genre invented primarily by Newyorican musicians in the 1960s. Incredibly fun and catchy, Bugalu lies somewhere between the stately Cuban sounds of the 50s and the manic high salsa of the 70s. Top artists included Joe Cuba and Richie Ray, whose tunes form the backbone of the new band’s repertoire.

In fact, the band is named for an early Richie Ray hit, “Lookie Lookie,” which encapsulates some of the pan-American fusion that went into Bugalu.

Lookie Lookie is an all-star lineup: Scott Getchell, trumpet; Ken Field, alto sax; Russ Gershon, tenor sax; Chris Maclachlan, bass; Rick Barry and Vicente Lebron, percussion. Collectively this hoary crew is in some way responsibile for the Either/Orchestra, the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, Bim Ska La Bim, Agachiko, Willie Alexander’s Persistence of Memory Orchestra and other top Boston bands.

Band godfather Vicente Lebron has played with many members of Ricardo’s Ray and Joe Cuba’s band over a long and storied career, beginning in New York in 1971. Since moving to Boston in 1974, he has been a mainstay of the Latin music community, as a player on the jazz scene with bands like the Either/Orchestra and Club D’Elf.

Lookie Lookie has the amazing ability to put a smile on the face of just about everybody, no matter what their musical taste. And, it’s easy and fun to dance to – you don’t have to know any fancy steps, the rhythm will take you away.

$10 at the door. Beer/wine/snacks available.

Gabriel’s Antiques

Getting back to my series on second-hand (antiques, consignment, thrift, etc.) stores, today we pay a virtual visit to Gabriel’s Antiques (100 Main Street).

_Gabriel's façadeGabriel’s is a “generalist” antique store tending towards upscale items and prices (although according to one on-line review I read, you can negotiate the prices).  What has usually most impressed me of their inventory is the selection of beautiful paintings, often partially showcased in the front window.

The last time I was there they also had a beautiful set of china plates with images from Gloucester, and other unique marine-themed items.  Gabriel’s is definitely a place to visit if you are looking to add an elegant (and perhaps locally flavored) touch to your living space! It is open Mon-Tue/Thurs-Fri-Sat 11AM-5PM, and Sunday 1-5 (closed on Wednesday).
And practically all these Main Street shops (Main Street Arts and Antiques, Dogtown Books, Banana’s, Dress Code, etc.) are in easy walking distance of each other, so you can find a parking space somewhere in the middle and go shop hopping… And of course there are all sorts of good restaurants in between where you can stop if your shopping makes you hungry!

The Urge to Merge From Jerry Gallant

The Urge to Merge

You know spring is just around the corner when the Jersey barriers show up on the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge. I don’t understand why people have such a difficult time understanding the concept of merging two lanes into one. Instead of forming one lane all the way back to Sudbay Motors why not try two lanes right up to the merge. Then it is the simple act of alternating one vehicle from the left and one from the right.

I travel up to the merge in the lane less traveled and I have been cut off, cursed at, beeped at and then not allowed to merge when the time comes.

Honey Bees swarm Gloucester Marine Railways.

Deputy Fire Chief Miles Schlichte submits-

Railways bees

I thought you all might appreciate this call we had today. Photos attached also.

In this business one never knows what the FD will be called upon to handle on any given day.

Honey Bees swarm Gloucester Marine Railways.

In spite of their over one hundred and fifty years of being able to handle anything, the Gloucester Marine Railways workers ran for cover today when an estimated 25,000 honey bees decided to call some steel scaffolding home.

The FD received a call from Ms. Viking Gustafson who is the manager of the Gloucester Marine Railways on Rocky Neck. Ms. Gustafson had a unique situation that she was requesting help with. A substantial swarm of bees had descended on the shipyard and Ms. Gustafson was concerned for the safety of her employees. Upon arrival the Deputy Chief on duty met with Ms. Gustafson and discussed the options as the bees had now settled on some steel scaffolding and the bees were in one large clump. Suggested options from the shipyard workers included smoking them to sleep, a quick burst of CO to freeze them, a quick burst of flame from a cutting torch or a drowning water spray from a fire engine. All of these options were deemed not to be in the best interest of all involved, especially the bees.

The animal control officer was called to the scene and upon arrival he agreed with the plan to leave the bees alone and wait for them to fly away. With the assurance from animal control that the bees wouldn’t bother anyone who didn’t bother them, the workers again went about their business while giving the bees a wide berth. While this plan was ongoing calls were made to local connections including the staff at the Gloucester DPW who came up with the name of a bee keeper who lives on Briarwood Street. This gentleman was called by the Deputy Chief and a message left on his home phone. Mr. Greg Morrow contacted the Deputy Chief a short while later and agreed to come by when he got home from work in Boston.

Around 7PM Mr. Morrow and the Deputy Chief met Ms. Gustafson at the shipyard to find that the bees had moved from the scrap pile they were on to an electrical panel on the pier. The concern was now that the bees would attempt to create a hive inside the electrical box so instead of waiting any longer for them to move on their own accord, the decision was made to remove the bees from the property.

In preparation for this possibility Mr. Morrow had brought an empty wooden hive from his home which he set on top of the electrical panel for the bees to enter. Once the bees had entered their new hive Mr. Morrow removed the hive from the railways and transported them safely away.

The only injury during this event was to the Deputy Chief who got too close to the hive taking the attached pictures and was stung. The only fatality was to the bee doing the stinging.

Mr. Morrow estimated that this substantial hive weighed in at five pounds of bees with an estimated 25,000 bees in number.

A likable, entertaining guy, Luciano never misses an opportunity to perform for his customers and countless relatives. One day his family urge him to try out for the reality show “Big Brother,” and in chasing this dream his perception of reality begins to change. Barry Sullivan stars as David Scott in a Fiesta-themed episode of “Harbormaster” at Cape Ann Community Cinema on Saturday, June 29th at 2:30pm.

Cinema friend Phil Hopkins of the Rockport-based film preservation outfit Film Chest has uncovered a little-seen episode of a short-lived 1950s TV series called “Harbormaster,” an adventure show which starred Barry Sullivan and Paul Burke, and will present iton Saturday the 29th at 2:30pm. In the episode, entitled “The Sawtucket Festival,” Gloucester and Rockport double as the fictional Scott Island. It was filmed Sunday morning during St. Peter’s Fiesta in 1957, with scenes shot on Washington Street, Our Lady of Good Voyage on Prospect Street, and Bradley Wharf in Rockport. Additionally, Pierce Sears, proprietor of Twin Lights Soda in Rockport, filmed nearly 20 minutes of 8mm color behind-the-scenes footage during the shoot, and will narrate the footage live.
