We’ve pointed out before that North Shore 104.9 host Aurelia Nelson frequently features local talent on her show, “Curtain Up” (see examples here). This Sunday 12/22 she pulls out all the stops with her hyper-local Christmas show featuring some of Cape Ann’s top talent performing a Christmas repertoire that rivals what you’d hear on a big city radio show!
You’ll hear Dan King’s wonderful new Christmas song “Handmade With Love (Present)” featuring Charlee Bianchini, “I wish I Could Fly” written by Allen Estes & Fly Amero, new songs by Bryan Alex, John Stevens and Angie Miller (Beverly’s own Idol finalist) and selections by the Beantown Swing Orchestra.
We know you’ll be at Gloucester’s UU Church on Saturday night, where you can see many of these stars LIVE — and we promise the show will be over in plenty of time for you to get a good night’s sleep and get up by 9am for Curtain Up on North Shore 104.9.
Then on Sunday night at 7pm, you can hear a realradio play, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” This is a rare experience you simply can’t get any other way. Build a fire, sit together as a family in the living room, tune the radio to 104.9, chill in a comfy chair, close your eyes and lose yourself in this classic story. When’s the last time you heard a radio play?

Well, this is it. The high point of my year. My therapist, me, warns me not to believe everything I think. I’m going with that one. And you should too. So, come out this Thursday to witness the Star in the East who’s gonna fall out of the sky and land on his ass just for you. Not Fred, I’m talking about that formidable pied piper Mr. Gordon “Sax” Beadle. Frontman, and master of the tenor honk-a-phonium, this guy is the drill sergeant of the blues. He’ll have you quaking and reaching for the brass ring all night long. Sax Gordon is my personal favorite blasting cap. Fire in the hole!!
But wait! There’s more. Knot only is Gordie on the bill, but also my favorite drumbler and comedy partner, Mr. Edd Scheer. Known for his incredible understanding of my random mutterings, Edd’s sure to raise your blood pressure by 30 PSI. We both suffer from riposte traumatic stress disorder, leaving our incredible Qatarist, Mr. Mike DiBari, lurching in the wake of the verbal tsunami. It’ll be the best night of the year! You’ll quake, you’ll shake, you’ll need some kind of crutch. Bring Diaperine®.

I spoke with Police Chief Leonard Campanello today about the Rogers St. construction site where the stairs once were. The official plan is for 5 to 10 new parking spaces and some pleasant landscaping to be completed by Spring 2014. The work is being done by Gloucester Dept. of Public Works under the the direction of Mike Hale.
The entrance to the GPD/Courthouse will be via the stairs that now exist from the current parking lot on Rogers St.

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.
This week we have something a little different on our plate.
Gloucester’s fishing industry has many components, most of which we have explored over the past year. We’ve visited fishing vessels, spoken with captains and crew, talked to boat owners, reported on fish processing, preparation and cuisine, described the species that are caught, prepared and served here in Gloucester and touched upon the state of the industry and its future.
Left out of the discussion until now has been the “back office,” the place where orders are placed and filled, fishing activities are tracked, prices are established, records maintained and distribution is begun. The office at Intershell Seafood is not that much different from those of other businesses, but it is the less public aspect of the fishing industry and we thought you would enjoy a glimpse of this vital part of the industry that always ends with a question: “What have you got for sale today?”
Our thanks to Paul Movalli, Yebing Rome, Ruby Xie and Chris Blankenbaker at Intershell for their hospitality and cooperation.
Tomorrow is what Winter in Gloucester is all about. Stroll downtown from 8am – 4pm and take in our historic city’s wonderful, eclectic architecture, do some shopping, eat, make an ice sculpture — or s’mores, listen to music, sing carols, (see music schedule) take some tours — you can even get a tree (see full Middle Street Walk event schedule). Plus you can get your Cape Ann Solstice tickets at City Hall and the Unitarian Universalist Church. Don’t wait until the last minute — and don’t say we didn’t warn you. If you can’t get downtown tomorrow, get tickets here.

Yesterday’s marathon toy drive led by Senator Bruce Tarr and broadcast on North Shore 104.9 brought in lots of toys and cash donations, but it’s not over yet. If you missed the opportunity to donate a toy yesterday, you can drop one off at any of the collection spots through next Friday, December 20. See a list of collection spots here.
Here’s a wonderful PSA created by Cape Ann TV featuring local budding movie stars!

Massachusetts, the Bay State, is renowned for many things. It has some of the richest history and oldest buildings in the nation; some of our country’s best colleges; and, of course, Boston.
Bean Town is just one city, however, so we wanted to do all Massachusetts residents proud and determine which cities in the state are its very best. It’s the same thing we’ve already done with states like Washington and, a bit closer to home, New Jersey.
Of course, narrowing our selection down to a list of 10 and one winner overall—Marshfield—was not without a certain degree of challenge, but we figured Red Sox and Celtics fans are accustomed enough to dealing with that. When the results were tallied, the 10 best cities in the Bay State emerged:
