Golden Opportunity- Gloucester Fire Department Open House This Thursday For Recruitment

If ever there was a city job that you want it’s the Fire department.  Great Hours – Great Pay – Tremendous Benefits.  If you fit the criteria and don’t have a direction in life, let me tell you, it doesn’t get much better than being a Local Fireman.  I never even knew the had to recruit.  I just figured there was a backlog a mile long of applicants kinda like the waiting list for a mooring.   If you have a son or daughter who fits the age requirements or are a vet returning from duty without a job you’d be crazy not to show up for this Gloucester Fire Department Recruitment Open House.   Thursday February 27, 2014.  get on it!

Bowling At Cape Ann Lanes Is a Great Time

They’re doing a great job at Cape Ann Lanes.  We had a blast. Pizza, bowling, arcade games.  Fun City!

Used the UDine4Less coupon, saved a bunch of money and the girls loved it.

I know Kings is the trendy spot right now but I’ve yet to be able to get in there without a 2 hour wait.  We have a great bowling experience right here in Gloucester.

Check out UDne4Less for the coupon too-

Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

This winter has been tough on everyone, but the fishing industry has been particularly hard hit. In this week’s video, storm scenes set the stage for a chat with Steve Connolly Seafood‘s Romeo Solviletti who describes the effects of this stormy and frigid winter on Gloucester’s fleet, processors and customers.

Thanks to GMG’s own weatherman, Peter J. Lovasco, for his report during a 66 mph blast on the back shore.

June 1943. “Gloucester, Mass. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lopez. They have two boys in the armed forces, six children altogether. He is a fish skinner in the Gorton-Pew fishery.” Photo by Gordon Parks, Office of War Information.

To think this man worked on the very property that our Grandfather Captain Joe bought 10 years later in 1953.  Our fathers worked there alongside our grandfather and Frank and I run it now as a lobster company after we diversified away from handling groundfish once the auction opened and we saw the writing on the wall with the new rules being handed down to try to manage how many fishermen could fish. Thanks Geno for sending us the  photo of Gordon-Pew fishery last week-

This Thursday night @ The Dave Sag’s Blues Party ~ Special Guests: A-Train…Put on your dancing shoes! 8 to11- 2.20.2014

Dave says,

It’s a pleasure to have back those Saxophone rascals, the Razdan boys for another romp this Thursday nite. Last time around, we got snowed out. But it’s a go, now, and the A-Train Orchestra posse is back in town ready to poke you in the musical eye with their own brand of sizzling swing. There’s Dad, or Rikky, on  multiple contusions, son Alek right behind him on tenor and soprano saskatoon, aided by the capable  combo of Dan Whalen, on qatar, and Doc Vincent on  spin cycle. I’ll be on base, as usual. Hopefully some really slick dudes and their horns will show up to lubricate the proceedings. We shall see. Opening arguments at 8 pm. Bring your slide rule!

In preparation for my adventure to Mexico to film the Monarchs, nearly every afternoon I have been “hiking” around Eastern Point. According to my car odometer, from the Niles Beach parking lot to the lighthouse and back is just a little over two miles. I realize that I must look fairly comical with headphones, hiking boots, and loaded down with a full backpack, all while trying to dodge the black ice. The walk is always beautiful–the freezing temperatures and icy roads not so much!

Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph Film Project Website Launch

Feast of Saint Joseph header for website ©Kim Smith 2014

You may recall that last year on Saint Joseph’s Day, as well as during the nine day novena leading up to the Feast, we began filming the community-wide project, Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph.  My original hope was to have completed the doucmentary and release it to the community on Saint Joseph’s Day 2014. There are, however, several very important elements missing, and they can only be filmed during the days leading up to Saint Joseph’s Day. In lieu of presenting the finished film on St. Joseph’s Day, March 19th, 2014, we will instead be releasing a short 5-minute film trailer. Stay tuned for more details!

My most heartfelt thanks goes to all the families who have so far contributed to make this a very special film. If you would like to participate in creating Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph ~ A Community Film Project, please contact the director, Kim Smith, at kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com. Much more is to come, with many wonderful surprises. Stay tuned for updates as filmmaking takes place during the Feast of San Giuseppe, 2014!

While editing over the past few months, I created Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph  website to keep our community informed and updated about the film’s progress. Read more about Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph, the Director’s Statement, follow our blog, and see snapshots from last year’s filming here:
