Order Your Beautiful Caffe Sicilia Cassata Siciliana for Easter Today!

During this year’s round of filming for Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph Community Film Project, I had the wonderful good fortune to stop at Caffe Sicilia just as Maria Cracchiolo was about to decorate her signature Cassata Siciliana.

It was the morning of Saint Joseph Day and as you can imagine, Caffe Sicilia was bustling to fill the day’s special orders of delicious Sicilian pastries and altar breads. Nevertheless, I asked Maria if she would mind if I filmed her while she decorated the cake. No, not all, she graciously allowed. Maria is so deft at cake making that it took her only minutes to create this masterpiece. It’s all been captured for our film project! The Vine below gives a tiny glimpse of Maria’s artistry.

Cassata Siciliana is also traditionally served at Easter time. What a gorgeous gift Caffe Sicilia’s cassata would make to share at your family’s Easter celebration, which as you may know is coming up very soon, in less than two weeks, on Sunday, April 5th. Believe me when I write, Maria’s Cassata Siciliaina tastes as good as it looks–divine, actually! A partial list of the ingredients includes sponge cake, ricotta, liquor, marzipan, royal icing, and candied fruit.

Special orders may be placed by calling Caffe Sicilia at 978-283-7345.

Happy First Day Of Spring!

Azure Bluets, Quaker Ladies, Houstonia caerulea -2 ©Kim Smith 2014Bluets, also known by the charming name Quaker Ladies

The first day of spring! It’s official although, with temperatures hovering in the twenties, its hard to believe. Close your eyes and imagine along with me pink and orange tulips, spring dresses, (stick with me here–just don’t look out your window at the still high drifts of snow) fields of bluets, sailboats in the harbor, windows open, the music of buzzing bees, shoots of new green grass, blue skies, robin bird songs, the smell of freshly tilled earth, fog horns in the distance, baby birds, misty warm April showers, the sweet scent of jonquils, bird’s nests along the meadow’s edge, the song of the Baltimore orioles returning, walking along the beach (without bundling up), friendly Red Admiral butterflies, lilacs, plum blossoms, magnolias in bloom, dogwoods in bloom, orange poppies, sweet pea tendrils, and sweet alyssum (see there, its not that hard).

Hurry Up Spring!

Do you have good manners?

Has this happened to you? Or are you one of THOSE people?

After driving around the parking lot looking for a space, for who knows how long, I finally found someone walking to their car. Mind you, there is no one else in sight and I wait patiently for the person to put away their groceries. May I add I had my blinker on as well.

As the person pulls out of the space there is another car that comes around the corner from the other end and proceeds to pull into the parking space. ARE YOU KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW?

The look on my face must of been filled with rage and the person saw and proceeded to back out of that space. As they drove past me they yell “Relax!”

Really A**hole? Relax! They are lucky they pulled out of that space because clearly they would of gotten an earful about manners!

GOOD HARBOR BEACH RETAINING WALL COLLAPSE

The winter has been hard on our fair city. Gloucester’s DPW is going to have its hand’s full in the coming months.

What would you do?

Say you’re driving along on 128 and there is this car up your rear end so you decide to switch lanes. You then see this car zip past you and start weaving in and out of cars up ahead. Traffic slows down a bit so you meet up with this car once again. You get a good look at the driver and it happens to be a teenage driver, not any teenager but you know the parents.

Do you call the parents and tell them what you saw? OR

Do you leave it alone because it’s “none of your business”?

Thoughts?

An Irish Blessing

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

We Lost A Great FOB From Ontario Canada- Bruce Bonham

Bruce had been a regular on GMG from the early days even though he lived in Canada, and visited every summer.  Always friendly and upbeat he loved GMG and Our City.  In the picture below you can see Bruce with the original GMG Bumper Sticker back in May 2009, a year and a couple months after GMG started and Bruce was already hooked.

Daughter Jacquelyn writes-

Just wanted to send a big thank you to Good Morning Gloucester, My father Bruce Bonham who passed suddenly on March 3/15 was truly a fan. My parents spent many years vacationing in Gloucester ” Rocky Neck ” and  my dad always wanted me to see his favorite spot.  I was fortunate enough to join my parents on trips to this special place.  My father loved this so much he said he felt he was home.

Good Morning Gloucester was a regular routine for my dad with his morning coffee.

I want to thank all the people of Gloucester, Mona and her husband at Rocky Neck Accommodations, thanks for making our stays special and of course the boat rides.  Thanks to Brenda who conversed a lot with my dad. Thanks to the Rudder who always found us a table.  Thanks to you Joey for of course Good Morning Gloucester, and the Lobsta!!. To Nights On the Neck for making us feel welcome, and to Town of Gloucester for the same.

Thanks again for making this my fathers very special place

Hi Joey,
You may recall I was at the ‘dock’ last Tuesday (Sep. 21).
Since 2004, we’ve stayed at Mona Faherty’s Rocky Neck Accommodations.
Since I’m now retired, we’re trying to make the trip from St.
Catharines, Ontario (near Niagara Falls).
Obviously, we love the area. And we love GMG!
Thought I’d send you three pictures I took during our last visit, if
they’re any use to your web site.
See you next May, if all goes as planned!

BREAKING NEWS SNOWFALL RECORDS SMASHED!

With a total of 108.6 inches, last night at 7pm 2014-2015 became Boston’s snowiest winter since snowfall records started being kept in 1872.

Gloucester smashed her record awhile back. I think we are currently at around 125 to 126 inches. Does anyone know Gloucester’s official total?
