GMG Question and Answers- EJ Khan

image

Yep, our own EJ Khan gets into the act-

How long have you lived in Gloucester?  Since September 15 (about 5-1/2 months)

What is your favorite season In Gloucester?
living here I’ve only fully experienced fall and winter, and have enjoyed both; but summer is definitely my favorite season.

Do you have any secret outdoor spots in Gloucester where you go to “get away”?
Cambridge Beach at low tide when I can climb up onto the rocks overlooking Wingaersheek Beach, Ipswich Bay and Annisquam Light.
What is your favorite pizza joint in Gloucester?  I haven’t had pizza in Gloucester yet, so can’t say

What is your favorite sub shop in Gloucester?
  I seldom eat subs

What place would you go for a romantic dinner in Gloucester?
The Market Restaurant on Lobster Cove

What is your favorite bar in Gloucester?  I don’t generally go to bars.

What is your favorite breakfast joint in Gloucester?
 Willow Rest

What is your favorite local event in Gloucester? So far, the Rocky Neck Plunge, but I haven’t been here long enough or experienced enough to have a favorite.
In the summer do you prefer the beach or to be on a boat? Beach
Who is your favorite local artist? I love Sharon Lowe’s photography, Paul Frontiero’s rocks, Manny Simoes videos, and Brian O’Connor’s photography to name a few.  To me, artist denotes musician, painter, sculptor, photographer, videographer, actor, poet and more, so it is difficult, if not impossible, to come up with a single favorite.  As an old Master Gloucester artist, I love Fitz Hugh Lane’s work.

Which is your favorite local beach? Lighthouse Beach
Who has the best chowder in town? Haven’t tried enough places to say, but for my taste, probably me.

Excluding GMG what is your second favorite local blog?  Don’t get to spend much time exploring other blogs, but do enjoy Kim Smith’s

Do you prefer haddock chowder or clam chowder?   I like clam chowder with haddock or cod.  Or fish chowder with clams and shrimp.  Or corn chowder with shrimp and lobster.   I generally make my own, so can have it however I want it.  Plain old haddock chowder or clam chowder don’t excite me that much.

What is your favorite Gloucester neighborhood?  Annisquam so far, since it where I live and have gotten to know the best.  I like Rocky Neck alot too, but also really like the Main Street of Gloucester, and the working fishing port section, although that’s not really a neighborhood.

What is your favorite local band? since I don’t go to bars, and the performances I have gone to weren’t local artists, I haven’t gotten to hear any local bands yet.

Who is your favorite local artist?

The first Cape Ann artist that I have always admired is landscape painter Ken Gore (1911-1990).  Ken was a member of the Northshore Art Association and The Rockport Art Association.  He had a studio and gallery on East Main Street across from the The Beacon Marine where he taught painting on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. My father, a student of Ken’s, arranged for me to have lessons with Ken.    My paintings were not very good, but Ken saw ability in my drawings and encouraged me to seriously pursue art.  I was 13.

Attached is a photo of Ken’s painting "The Willow" that was auctioned through Blackwood March Auctioneers a few years ago.  I chose this painting to accompany this post because of the sheep, as well as his trademark use of the palette knife. Ken told me that when he was first learning to paint he was given a 2" brush to paint and 3 colors: red, yellow, blue and white.   The subject?  sheep.  He  could paint them in his sleep.  Ken said that anything one could do with a small brush,  could be done with a big brush; but, a small brush cannot do the work of a big brush.  This advice has guided me through 40 odd years of painting,  My preferred brushes are 1-2" bristle chip brushes that can hold alot of paint.

btw:  my first lesson was to draw a portrait of another student’s husband, then to paint his portrait.  the drawing was true to the man’s age.  the painting made him look so much younger that his wife bought it.  i didn’t get the money, it was paid to Ken for my very first lesson. In exchange for future lessons, I posed for Ken’s classes.

GMG Questions and Answers- Dawn Gadow

Dawn is the Director at Art Haven among many other things and is now part of the Block Party Committee!

How long have you lived in Gloucester?  Well, I’ve lived here for about a year. But I also lived here for the summer of 2008 and I think that’s when I knew I belonged. And I’ve worked here for almost two years.

What is your favorite season In Gloucester?
You can’t beat the summers downtown – the long days, people outside enjoying the beautiful landscapes and company.

Do you have any secret outdoor spots in Gloucester where you go to “get away”?
I spend a lot of time on the rocks in Magnolia since they’re a couple blocks from my house. There are so many days when there isn’t anything I would rather do than sit on the rocks by the ocean and relax.

What is your favorite pizza joint in Gloucester?

I LOVE calzones from Mike’s Place. Although I probably go to Supreme’s and grab a slice most often – it’s so affordable and right down the street from Art Haven.

What is your favorite sub shop in Gloucester?

Virgilio’s, without a doubt. Foot long tuna sub with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles could never fail to make my day better.

What place would you go for a romantic dinner in Gloucester?
I haven’t done the romantic dinner thing in Gloucester too much, but I would say Latitude 43 or Alchemy. I love the atmosphere in both places and the food is always different and delicious.

What is your favorite bar in Gloucester?

I’m a quiet bar kind of person, so I actually really enjoy JD & Myers in Magnolia. I also went to Stone’s Pub for the first time the other night though and I’m a huge fan.

What is your favorite breakfast joint in Gloucester?
Sugar Mags! When I was going to Gordon College we would make regular trips and being close to it was one of the things I was most excited about when I first knew I’d be working on Main Street.

What is your favorite local event in Gloucester?  Well, gotta be buoy painting day at Art Haven! Oh wait, I guess I’m a little biased on that one. In all seriousness, I think block parties are one of the coolest things ever. Such a great idea and awesome community event. I’ve even invited my family from a couple hours away to come up for block party weekends to be a part of it.
In the summer do you prefer the beach or to be on a boat?  I prefer the beach for the most part. I love being on the sand.

Who is your favorite local artist? I would pick one of our students, but I can’t play favorites there and I guess some could argue that as a biased choice…haha. I think I’d have to go with Tom Torrey – If you haven’t seen his stuff, he’s a part of The Hive (thehivecapeann.com) and he makes the coolest creations out of recycled materials.

Which is your favorite local beach?  I can’t resist a trip to Good Harbor! I had some friends that lived in a house of Good Harbor my senior year at college, so it was the first beach in Gloucester I spent a lot of time at and I have some great memories there. I also still think its one of the greatest things that you can walk to the island from the beach!

Who has the best chowder in town? I don’t think I can answer this one – I’ve never been a huge chowder fan (sorry!!) so I haven’t tried very many…

Excluding GMG what is your second favorite local blog? Love The Hive Cape Ann’s blog – gets some different and fun information and local art out there.

Do you prefer haddock chowder or clam chowder?  I would have to pick clam chowder, but see two questions above…

What is your favorite Gloucester neighborhood? I love living in Magnolia, but I really love downtown. I love the energy and community of downtown Gloucester.

What is your favorite local band? Haven’t gotten into the local music scene as much as I’ve wanted to yet, but I did hear Pete Lindbergh on the blog the other day and I really liked it!

Dave Marciano Has Balls

Not too many people other than my favorite blogger Doug Maxfield that have the balls to write articles like the one Dave Marciano wrote in today’s GDT-

Letter: Coalition sector support now haunting fishermen

Click the link above to read what Dave has to say.  If what he says is true (and believe me I can’t even begin to understand how complex it all is) the way of life of the independent fishermen in Gloucester Ma will be lost forever within a generation.

i’m not sure how many people understand how sweeping the changes will be to our port but if it all is privatized the way it sounds like it’s going, go grab all the copies you can of John N Morris’ book Alone At Sea about the Schooners and Ron Gilson’s book about the waterfront An Island No More because the way of life as independent fishermen in Gloucester will be history and those two guys captured it in a real (non-romanticized way) better than anyone.
