THIS Lent, many ecologically conscious Americans might feel a twinge of guilt as they dig into the fish on their Friday dinner plates. They shouldn’t.

Over the last decade the public has been bombarded by apocalyptic predictions about the future of fish stocks — in 2006, for instance, an article in the journal Science projected that all fish stocks could be gone by 2048.

Subsequent research, including a paper I co-wrote in Science in 2009 with Boris Worm, the lead author of the 2006 paper, has shown that such warnings were exaggerated. Much of the earlier research pointed to declines in catches and concluded that therefore fish stocks must be in trouble. But there is little correlation between how many fish are caught and how many actually exist; over the past decade, for example, fish catches in the United States have dropped because regulators have lowered the allowable catch. On average, fish stocks worldwide appear to be stable, and in the United States they are rebuilding, in many cases at a rapid rate.

The history behind the tapes: Someone had asked Cigar Joe for an interview for an oral history project but Cigar Joe decided to do the recording himself. At the time he was having trouble with circulation in his legs and spent most of the time at home so he bought a tape recorder. He had trouble with the tape recorder and threw all of the tapes away. His mailman took the trashed tapes, spliced them, and made copies. He gave Cigar Joe copies and kept backups (with Cigar Joe’s consent) in case the originals were lost. This occurred in 1981.

Fred Buck Answers The Call Re: Photos Of The Rosemarie

A couple of days ago Mary Ann Anderson wrote in asking for help finding photos of her grandfather’s fishing boat, The Rosemarie-

Hi Joey,

I’m looking for some old photos of my grandfather’s fishing boat the Rosemarie. I was wondering if you could put something on the Good Morning Gloucester website to see if anyone has some. The boat sank years ago. My brother (Tom Scola) and I don’t have. My father, Joe Scola, is now 88 and would love to see some. Please let me know if this is something that can be done. Thank you.

joey – i work in the photo dept. at the cape ann museum.  saw the post looking for pics of the ‘rosemarie’  we’ve got a real beauty taken in the early 30s for Atlantic Fisherman by gloucester photographer john c. adams (she was built in maine in 1930) of her steaming into the harbor past the paint factory.  we’ve also got a number of others of her in harbor cove from the early 40s.  i’m attaching a low res version if you want to send it on to her or attach it to the post.  she’s welcome to get in touch with me at this email address and i’ll give her details on what we have and where she can find some other pix.  thanks for keeping it real!

The history behind the tapes: Someone had asked Cigar Joe for an interview for an oral history project but Cigar Joe decided to do the recording himself. At the time he was having trouble with circulation in his legs and spent most of the time at home so he bought a tape recorder. He had trouble with the tape recorder and threw all of the tapes away. His mailman took the trashed tapes, spliced them, and made copies. He gave Cigar Joe copies and kept backups (with Cigar Joe’s consent) in case the originals were lost. This occurred in 1981.

The family of Cigar Joe Frontiero brings Good Morning Gloucester these treasured recordings of smuggling liquor into the Essex River and into Annisquam in the first of a multi-part collection of recordings.  I’m happy that the family entrusted GMG with these priceless recordings and am proud to be able to have the platform in which we can archive and share with the community.

Cigar Joe Frontiero born in 1898 these tapes were recorded in 1981 when he was 83 years old.  Cigar Joe lived to be 96 years old and had whiskey and cigars at his nursing home every day til the day he died according to his granddaughter Josie Cary.

Hey Joe, bet you didn’t know I took some pictures of you steaming across the harbor Monday from the roof of the Coast Guard station did ya?  Look for the multi-part series starting Friday on the Coast Guard Boats, Inside the Station, On the Roof, The Can Do Café (where they eat) and more.  They were great hosts and gave Manny and I incredible access.  It should be a great series.

Joey I took these pics. between Cuba and Key West while we were bring the Midnight Sun home from Texas, I saw many sightings of marine animals on our 9 day trip ; mostly in the middle of the Gulf stream which gave as us a 3-6 knot push home. Also we were  "Red Sox Nation" from the time we left dock in Texas till we got home.  Joe T.

Mark O’Connell Has Questions About The Gale of 1862

Hello Joe,

I am planning on restoring a family cenotaph for a fisherman that went down to the sea during the Gale of February 24, 1862.

I care for 5 burial plots at St. Mary’s Cemetary in Newburyport. One of the stones… is an obelisk cut out of marble in 1862. On it reads Robert Hamilton, Drown at Sea, February 24, 186 . I decided to investigate professional cleaning and the re-cutting of the stone this summer, but since I couldn’t positively see the date of death, I began to investigate my great great grandfather’s death date.
Thank God I had a childhood memory… I used to play with a bookend of The Gloucester Fisherman. I remember my grandmother seeing me at play and then telling me that she was an invited guest at the unveiling of the Gloucester Fishermen’s Monument back when she was a young woman during the 1920’s.  She told me that apparently the paymaster had recorded my relatives’  name incorrectly in 1862.  Although the name is misspelled "Robert Hambleton" on the Fishermen’s Cenotaph she arranged for the paper transcript corrected  to the correct Robert Hamilton spelling.
I contacted the Gloucester Fishermen’s Memorial Committee and they said someone had changed the record.

From there I was able to find out the crews. I had family members on The Schooner Ocean Traveler which went down heading towards Newfoundland on January 1, 1862….and, a relative that mastered The Schooner North Star, and my great great grandfather, Robert Hamilton went down along with his cousin of his and 7 others on The Schooner "Contest" on February 24, 1862 on George’s Bank.

During my research, I was given your name.  I am writing to you in hopes that you may be able to tell me of whether you are aware of any kind of organization of relatives of the fishermen that went down that day.

I thank you for any information that you may be able to provide to me.  I’d like to contact any known relative and perhaps organize some kind of sesquicentennial remembrance.
