Let Us Eat Fish
By RAY HILBORN
Published: April 14, 2011 NY Times
THIS Lent, many ecologically conscious Americans might feel a twinge of guilt as they dig into the fish on their Friday dinner plates. They shouldn’t.
Over the last decade the public has been bombarded by apocalyptic predictions about the future of fish stocks — in 2006, for instance, an article in the journal Science projected that all fish stocks could be gone by 2048.
Subsequent research, including a paper I co-wrote in Science in 2009 with Boris Worm, the lead author of the 2006 paper, has shown that such warnings were exaggerated. Much of the earlier research pointed to declines in catches and concluded that therefore fish stocks must be in trouble. But there is little correlation between how many fish are caught and how many actually exist; over the past decade, for example, fish catches in the United States have dropped because regulators have lowered the allowable catch. On average, fish stocks worldwide appear to be stable, and in the United States they are rebuilding, in many cases at a rapid rate.

Blackburn Challenge: 99 Days
It is now only 99 days until the Blackburn Challenge on Saturday July 23rd. The Silver Jubilee, 25th running of the “any human powered craft” race around Cape Ann. The Essex River Race, a 5.5 mile down the river around Cross Island and back is only 30 days from now on Saturday, May 14th. Click the links for each race info. Essex registration is already open.
I think I will be enjoying the Essex race by eating breakfast overlooking the race. Post a comment if you know where the best Eggs Benedict are served on the river. By skipping the Essex I still have 99 days to get ready for the 21 miles of the Blackburn. Click here for my personal motivator page complete with countdown to the day and a map.
Boating safety in small craft: Everyone wants to get out there and start practicing but there is a hidden danger even on very toasty days. The water is still only 42 F. While you are out kayaking, wear a PFD and always think of how you are going to get out of the water if you flip. That water does not give you much time. 50 minutes at 50 F is the rule of thumb. At 42 F, quite a bit shorter before getting back in the kayak is difficult. Do not go alone and wear a PFD.
But it will be warmer soon. For inspiration I look at a photo Paul Frontiero took of me in my new ride as I tested it out last summer. Last year I went all the way around in 5 hours, 30 minutes, 20 seconds in a 71 pound kayak. This one is 28 pounds. The engine just needs to trim down a bit and I’ll be smokin’.

The Rudder Open Today and Launches Whole New Website-
They must have listened to our boy Paul Morrison who has been putting local restaurants on watch to get their sites updated in his “Seasonal Openings” posts which y0u can read here. Local restaurants, if you launch a new website, have something newsworthy happening and feel like sharing it with our readership of 15-22,000 people a day, you might want to pimp your info out just like Peter did in the following email to your boy Joey *hint-hint* in case you haven’t figured out how to contact us with breaking news or photos, there’s a tab up top labeled “Contact” it contains the email address for GMG. If clicking the tab is too difficult I’ll also provide it for you here so you won’t have any excuse-

Peter Van Ness Writes-
Dear Joey,
I know you’re a fan of the Rudder on Rocky Neck and I love the video and photo series you did on their renovation, so I thought you’d like to know that they open tomorrow April 14th with Tax Relief Specials like Chapter 7 drinks for $7 (IRS Screwdriver — Vickie’s name), 1040ez Appetizers $10.40 (Agent Crab Cakes) and lots more
(see all of them here http://rudderrestaurant.com/TaxReliefSpecials.pdf)
Also, Vickie and I just launched a new website for them with great photos (check out the attached Monkfish and Cioppino). The new Web site works great on a mobile phone (I’m almost ready to give up my Blackberry for a Droid … yikes!).
Check it out here: http://rudderrestaurant.com/.
We did a photo shoot there and got to taste some exquisite food. I’m not kidding, it’s better than ever this year!

Seasonal Openings Part V
This is another big weekend coming up. But first, who has already opened up in the past few weeks? Nate’s of Front Beach Rockport, The Lobster Pool at Halibut Point, Topside Grill in Gloucester, The Top Dog of Rockport, and last but not least just this past weekend the Dairy Train Ice Cream Shop next to the Railroad Station in Rockport.
This weekend is a real biggy. If you have not had your first 2011 summer hot dog, ice cream, oyster, or fried clam you should check your pulse if you make it through this weekend without a taste of summer.
A real spring kick off: get those veggies planted. Get down on your knees and get dirty because Goose Cove Gardens opens this Saturday April 16th. Well rooted flats of beets, to broccoli, kale to kohlrabi, leeks to lettuces and don’t forget swiss chard, onions aspargus and brussel sprouts. You say you don’t like brussel sprouts? Try growing your own and throwing them on the barbecue grill along with some baby beets. Find them on Facebook.
Thursday, April 14 @ 5:00PM The Rudder opens. They will be open for 3 days only on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays until June 19th when they open for 7 days a week. “Tax Relief” specials the first weekend and some great new items on the menu this year. Even if it is still cold and snowy on tax weekend the fireplace inside and the heated deck overlooking Smith Cove is the place to be.
Thursday, April 14, Lobsta Land Restaurant opens. Just say “Lobsta Land!” out loud three times. I feel better already. Check out their website. Countdown to Lobsta and it can be used for countdown to taxes also.
Friday, April 15, Captain Carlo’s opens with Jenny Dee & the Deelinquents playing that evening. Your taxes are in. Time to celebrate.
Seasonal establishments, add a comment and I will add you. Update your website, your Facebook page, and start tweeting. The early bird gets the fried clam sold.

Cape Ann Seasonal Openings, Quick Hit
Tons of openings next week (email me your opening or leave a comment) and I will post this coming Thursday. But I have to put up a quick note of the first ice cream store. The Dairy Train of Rockport. Turn in off Railroad Ave right at the train station to have soft serve in a Red Sox batting helmet. Or dozens of flavors and why not throw in a hotdog on a lovely day like today. Stop futzing on your computer and go for a drive or a bike ride. Make mine one scoop mint chocolate chip.

North Shore United Way Match Madness At Lat 43 Wednesday April 13th
We just doubled our impact for 13,000 North Shore children. We hope you will consider joining us. The North Shore United Way will be doubling all donations received by April 30th thanks to generous community supporters that have created a significant matching pool to close out this year’s annual campaign. We are within $100,000 of our goal.
We are calling this final push “Match Madness” and the focus this year is on North Shore United Way grants directly to programs that benefit local kids. As volunteers, we hear stories about how NSUW impacts local young lives every day—from providing access to healthy food for children in a low-income child care center, to supporting pre-teens and adolescents in six local middle and high schools around issues of bullying, substance abuse prevention and other challenges to their success.
These programs have a proven track record, but they are deeply dependent on us for their continuing success.
Also, as part of “Match Madness”, Gloucester’s restaurant, Latitude 43, is generously donating 10% of all dining room sales on Wednesday, April 13th from 5p.m.-close to the NSUW. Please consider bringing your family to enjoy a meal and some entertainment.
We know your donations and volunteer efforts really count for our youth on Cape Ann. Make your impact count twice by donating before April 30th. Visit us online at http://www.nsuw.org or call our office at 978.922.3966. Thank you on behalf of our children!

Cape Ann Brewing’s Haddock Sandwich
I’m just gonna put it out there that you don’t need to like craft beer to have an excuse to go to Cape Ann Brewing. The food is fantastic. This haddock sandwich might just have been the best I’ve ever eaten. They give you a huge portion of haddock, beer battered and cooked perfectly.
As an aside, you could also go just to listen to the beer nerds at the bar wet themselves talking about “mouth feel” and percentages of alcohol of each beer. It’s comical to listen to them try to out-do each other with obscure beer statistics and craft beer knowledge. Oy!

Guess we’ll be heading to Cala’s sometime soon honey. Cha-Ching! When we can feed ourselves cheaper than eating at home, you betcha!

Lobster Pool is Open and Toasty
Stop by the Lobster Pool out there in the northeast corner of Cape Ann on Halibut Point. It’s open and the back deck is toasty with a fire going. I went for my favorite fried clams and fried shrimp. I’ll be back for the scallops and the lobster next weekend.
Right after they opened this past Friday, all freshly painted with new signs being lettered:

$20 For $40 Worth Of Food At Lat 43
