Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

This week Kathy visited the Causeway Restaurant for a bowl of their seafood chowder, her favorite. For $7, it’s a meal and a half. Highly recommended, but to avoid waiting for a table, try the off hours.

Thinking about entering the Sailor Stan’s First Annual Invitational Soup’s On Best of Cape Ann Soup Competition this Sunday but don’t know what kind of soup to make?  Check out this site: http://glorioussouprecipes.com/?refsrc=email.  Of course, you don’t have to enter a soup in the competition to be part of this delicious fundraiser for the Center at Rocky Neck – you can just come enjoy and vote for the soups others have made.  I picked up the ingredients for my souper special soup yesterday.

Details:  Sunday, April 21 from 3:00-5:00pm, Sailor Stan’s First Annual Invitational Soup’s On – Best of Cape Ann Soup Competition with proceeds to benefit the Rocky Neck Cultural Center.   $12 includes samples of all the entries plus fresh bread and a beverage, $5 for children under 12.  Entrants eat for free and get to check out their competition.

If you make a great soup that you would like to have included in the competition, email EJ at khanstudio@comcast.net with your name and the type of soup you will bring.   The creator of the winning soup will win a $25 gift certificate to Sailor Stan’s, in addition to the worldwide acclaim and notoriety of being the best soup maker on Cape Ann.  Fun, delicious, heart and tummy-warming, and all for a good cause.

He’s Baaaaaack . . .

Something’s up in Gloucester.  Only 2 weeks ago, Dennis Brennan played The Rhumb Line with Dave Sag (see post about that here).

Tonight he’s back in Gloucester @ Jalapenos with Dave Brown, Wolf Ginandes & Dave Mattacks.  Could it be the tremendous musical talent resident in Boston is attracting yet another great musician?  That’s what we think.  So we’ve selected a series of Dennis Brennan videos to feature on gimmesound.  See them here.

You might want to call Jalapenos at 978-283-8228 to reserve a table for tonight.  The room is usually full.

Here’s a video of Dennis when he was a bit younger.

MS Fundraiser at Passports Restaurant tonight!

Love Soup?

“Eat soup first and eat it last,
and live to till a hundred years be passed”

Do you love soup?  Do you have a great soup recipe?  Do you want to help support the Rocky Neck Cultural Center?  Then you don’t want to miss this.

On Sunday, April 21 from 3:00-5:00pm, mark your calendars for Sailor Stan’s First Annual Invitational Soup’s On – Best of Cape Ann Soup Competition with proceeds to benefit the Rocky Neck Cultural Center.

If you make a great soup that you would like to have included in the competition, email me at khanstudio@comcast.net with your name and the type of soup you will bring.  Entries will be limited to 14 unique soups, including Karen Roberts’ and my own special secret recipes, so there is room for 12 additional entries.  We want to be able to offer a variety of unique soups for people to enjoy and vote for, so come up with something other than chicken, unless you know you make the best damn chicken soup ever.  The creator of the winning soup will win a $25 gift certificate to Sailor Stan’s, in addition to the worldwide acclaim and notoriety of being the best soup maker on Cape Ann.  Fun, delicious, heart and tummy-warming, and all for a good cause.

Those who just love to eat soup, show up at Sailor Stan’s with $12 in hand ($5 for children under 12), enjoy soup, fresh bread and a beverage to your heart’s and belly’s delight, cast your vote for your favorite soup, and help support the Cultural Center.  And while you’re here, make sure you stop by the Center and enjoy the Best of Rocky Neck show currently on exhibit.

P.S.  I make a darn good soup, and Karen is the “Soup Nazi”, so bring on the competition!  I’m talkin to you, Sista Felicia!

Although not native to the waters of Cape Ann, little compares to these Blue Point, Westport, CT oysters, shucked and devoured at Gloucester’s Wingaersheek Beach. Kathy recently mastered the art of shucking and showed Marty how to find the hinge to unlock the shells. She also shared them with Fred Bodin (Bodin Historic Photo) and made a video of his technique.
The oysters were purchased at Connolly Seafoods: http://www.steveconnollyseafood.com. The last frame shows the additional gifts from the sea courtesy House of the Raven: http://houseoftheraven.com

Hi Joey!

A few of us just graduated from the “Become an Expert” wine series at Savour Wine and Cheese on Prospect Street and had such a great time I wanted to share…  The classes were so full of information as to taste, production, food pairing, along with many laughs – they just flew by, we learned more than we’ll ever remember and made friends as well!  Kathleen was a wonderful instructor and her shop is just beautiful!!

T Max has a new CD, new live shows and a new Noise magazine this week

T Max, founder/editor of The Noise, New England’s longest running music magazine, is all over Gloucester this month.  You can see him on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes, which airs on Cape Ann TV tomorrow (WED) at 6:30pm, Friday at 1:30pm and Sunday at 6pm.  For all you Noise readers who don’t live on Cape Ann, catch the show on-line here.

Then on Thursday, you can see him live at Giuseppe’s in Gloucester with the Singer Songwriter Shuffle.  On April 17 he’s Fly Amero’s guest at The Rhumb Line.  Speaking of Fly, he’s on the cover of The Noise this month and guess who wrote the cover story?  (Read it here).  Tomorrow, Fly welcomes his family as special guests at The Rhumb Line for a very special surprise birthday party for his sister Joyce.

And to top it off, T Max has a new CD, Thinking Up A Dream (get it here) featuring eight brand-new original songs, one of which is based on a spontaneous burst of creativity he had while we were shooting a video series about music in Gloucester.  More on that in this post.

Just to get you in the mood, we’ll leave you with Allen Estes’ only protest song (with a reggae beat) that T Max inspired him to sing when he was Allen’s guest on Local Music Seen.  You can see Allen tonight with Dave Brown, Dave Mattacks, Wolf Ginandes and J.B. Amero at Jalapenos.  Bring the kids and request this song . . .

More Allen Estes videos here.
