The Art Of Alchemy Featured Artist- Baraka Robin Berger
Yesterday I got to meet Baraka, the Featured Artist At Alchemy this month. Below is some of her work as displayed at Alchemy and below is the press release explaining how part of the proceeds of any sale of Baraka’s work will go to the Gloucester Education Foundation.
You can see more of Baraka’s work at her site
Alchemy Tapas & Bistro is Gloucester’s newest culinary patron of the arts. Building on his original vision of Alchemy as a “community living room” and a gathering place for cultural creatives, owner Mark McDonough was proud to formally cut the ribbon of “The Alchemy of Art” Gallery by hosting and showcasing the work of local artist Baraka Robin Berger. The ribbon cutting ceremony and the gallery’s official opening occurred in mid November and showcases Baraka’s artwork through the months of November and December.
“We envision doing this in partnership with the community and in such a way where both the artists and local organizations benefit. We are pleased to say we will be contributing our consignment fee of 10% of all art sales directly to the Gloucester Education Foundation. At the end of 2011 Alchemy will host an annual silent auction and party at Alchemy on behalf of the Gloucester Education Foundation with all proceeds directly benefiting the foundation. But don’t wait until then before coming by Alchemy to purchase that perfect gift of art for the holiday season!
Great News- Andiamos Sign Is Back Up!
To say that I’m excited by the prospect of Andiamos re-opening in the space where Culina Cafe has occupied for the past couple of years would be an understatement. While Culina Cafe offered very generous portions while they were open, the people who ran Andiamos had some fantastic dishes.
I noticed the sign had changed yesterday so of course I’m going to have to stop and get that picture and bring my loyal readers the news first!

Sista Felicia’s Pinulata Recipe On the Gloucester Daily Times Website
If you grew up in a Sicilian or Italian household or ever went to one at this time of year you may remember having Pinulata.
This is an Italian holiday treat that you can make ahead and leave in serving dishes around your house. Felicia (Ciaramitaro) Mohan of Gloucester makes them, based on her grandmother Felicia’s recipe, as little bites of fried dough slathered in a honey-corn syrup mixture topped with bits of chocolate, toasted nuts and fresh cinnamon.

HOLIDAY COMMUNITY DINNER DECEMBER 25, 2010 AT THE FETTIG’S HOUSE
BLT at Willow Rest
Some sandwiches I don’t think I have ever ordered, tuna fish sandwich, PB&J, or a BLT. Why? because I know I can make them better myself and they are so easy to make. I think I shied away from ordering a BLT because I figured they would just use the bacon left over from breakfast. Until Sue and Evvy split a BLT at Willow Rest. They let me have one bite. Wow. Â It wasn’t until this week that I got back to order one for myself.

This bacon lettuce and tomato is better than I have ever made.
The bun: soft and chewy, buttered and toasted on the grill for a nice layer of crunch.
Bacon: thick, salty, smoked, I think you can get this in the Willow Rest refridgerator case.
Lettuce: fluffy pile for good texture to oppose the crunch of bacon and the grilled bun.
Tomato: still getting that homegrown taste in December.
The mayo: some kind of secret mixture with a nice tang to it.
The last five times I’ve stopped at the Willow Rest I can’t help ordering the Cuban. I might have found the lunch that will win the next five visits.

Sista Felicia’s Saint Lucia Holiday Pudding Recipe
Santa Lucia Day, a traditional Sicilian holiday that many celebrate, is December 13th. To Felicia (Ciaramitaro) Mohan and many other Sicilians it is remembered as a day when her grandmother invited all of the kids to her house to eat the large pan of pudding simultaneously in an “eating race.”
Catholic traditions tell the legend of how there was a great hunger in Syracuse, Sicily, and the town’s people had gathered in the cathedral on her feast day, December 13th, to pray, and two ships loaded with wheat arrived, with her at the helm of one, dressed in white, with a halo of candles on her head. This is the explanation given for the cucci, or cooked wheat which is an ingredient in all her festival ‘s foods. Cuccia, a kind of sweet porridge is made with wheat berries, chocolate, sugar and milk. Each family has their own versions of this dish.
For Felicia’s grandmother’s version, additional ingredients of cornstarch, vanilla, salt and fresh ground cinnamon are added. Felicia strongly recommends that it is worthwhile to go to a specialty spice store and find the Italian cinnamon sticks and grind them yourself.

In the tradition of Good Morning Gloucester always bringing you into the local joints first we yet again bring you the first photos taken by media inside Cape Ann Brewing and an interview with owner Jeremy Goldberg who gives the rundown of what the differences between the old place and the new.
It’s what we do- bring you inside first.
The bar is looooooong. Lots of wood, a beautiful deck overlooking the working waterfront, serious kitchen and wide open. This space is sure to bring in locals as well as craft beer enthusiasts in just another fantastic reason to make Gloucester a destination.
The kitchen will be serving comfort food and some very interesting seafood dishes (I’ll leave the details for our video interview with Jeremy Goldberg)
