“Jessica Delfino has one of the funniest bits I’ve ever heard…smart, socially aware comedy.” -The Huffington Post

“A stirring show of ribald folk songs. There’s more to this seriously talented comic songwriter than jokes…a tough show to top” — London METRO

“We were immediately stuck to our seats stunned and smiling as Jessica Delfino engaged us in tune after tune…She is funny. And smart.” — Thurston Moore & Byron Coley, Arthur Magazine

Glitters, sprinkles, rainbow fluff: A) the first few words of a kids’ song? Or, B) the opening line of an edgy, electro-pop number which got Jessica publicly denounced by the US Catholic League, sealed her first record deal and sent her on a UK tour where she had sold out shows? That would be “B”.

Introducing Jessica Delfino. Originally hailing from Damariscotta, Maine, Jessica now calls New York City her home, but she spends a good amount of her time on the road these days, sharing her “dirty folk rock” with anyone who will listen. And it turns out there are actually plenty of people who are ready to hear Jessica’s often comedic, sometimes naughty ballads, anthems and musical numbers.

Much of the award-winning songstress’s repertoire addresses the darker side of life, as in her song, “I Hate Everybody”, or deconstructs sex acts posing as anti-war campfire songs, as in her song, “No More War”. In some songs, she keeps it clean, discussing unicorns and the like. Her bevy of unusual instruments include the normal enough guitar, but then she adds to that an “emergency whistle”, a “q-chord”, and a “flying V ukulele”, and you’ve got “fun for the whole family,” Jessica explains, “except for the kids.”

Jessica recently performed at the world famous Reading & Leeds Festival in England where Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain famously rolled himself out onto the stage in a wheel chair some years ago. Jessica’s work has appeared on TV, radio and she was just this week touted as one of “NYC’s 50 most stylish people” in a photo spread in Time Out NY. Oh, and she is something of an internet celebrity. If you don’t believe it, she suggests you just “google her and see what comes up.”

International Lobstermen Travel to Maine through MLA Lobstermen’s Exchange

From The Island Institute via Monkeyfist at the Casco Bay Boaters Blog

Lobstermen from all over the world will travel to Maine March 4-14 through the Lobstermen’s Exchange organized by the Maine Lobstermen’s Association (MLA).

Seven lobstermen from Tasmania, West Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and the Caribbean will meet with Maine lobstermen.

It begins with a Mid-coast Regional Meeting March 4 from 3:00 to 5:00 at the Maine Fishermen’s Forum at the Samoset Resort in Rockport. Exchange participants will spend 3 days at the forum networking with Maine fishermen. Afterwards, the Lobstermen’s Exchange will hit the road-visiting wharves, local businesses, attending community dinners and hosting talks in Downeast, Midcoast and southern Maine locations. Maine families are graciously providing home-stays and organizing community events for their international lobstermen counterparts.

Maine lobstermen are encouraged to come “talk shop” with their peers from overseas and share ideas on gear, bait-usage and how to weather the recession.

A Downeast regional meeting will be held at the Ellsworth City Hall from 2:00 to 4:00 on March 9 and a Southern regional meeting will be held at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute from 2:00 to 4:00 on March 12. Lobstermen are encouraged to attend.

The Lobstermen’s Exchange will host events in Cutler on March 7-8, Jonesport on March 8, Mount Desert Island area on March 8-9, Stonington on March 9-10, Vinalhaven on March 10-11, Phippsburg on March 11-12, Long Island and Portland on March 12-14. International lobstermen will attend the Boston Seafood Show on March 14.

“During these challenging times, it’s important to share information and hear about what’s working for lobstermen in other regions,” said Patrice McCarron, Executive Director of the MLA.

Funding for this project is provided by the Maine Sea Grant, Maine Fishermen’s Forum, Island Institute, Maine Research, Education and Development Fund and in-kind support from Maine’s fishing communities and the MLA.

Fishing Film – “A Fish Story” (2/24/10)

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24TH @ 7:30PM

On this national day of protest and awareness, come share in the tale of two women who lead their communities in a battle for control of the ocean. Angela Sanfilippo of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Shareen Davis of Chatham, Massachusetts were born into fishing families and married men who continue to make a living from the sea. Fishing defines who they are and has sustained their communities for generations. But their way of life is threatened when a powerful coalition of national environmental groups file a lawsuit that could put hundreds of fishermen out of business. Three hundred years of fishing tradition and the health of the ocean hangs in the balance.

Courtney Hayes, one of the producer-directors of the film, will present the film and host a Q&A after.

http://nelights.blogspot.com/2010/02/maria-bray-heroine-of-thacher-island.html

Alexander Bray became the principal keeper of the twin light station at Thacher Island, off Rockport, Massacusetts, in 1864. Bray—a Civil War veteran—and his wife, Maria (Herrick), were both descended from old Gloucester families. Bray had been an assistant keeper since 1861.

Maria Bray was described as a woman of unusual literary abilities. She contributed articles to the local newspapers and wrote short stories, and for a time she served as the editor of a literary magazine called Magnolia Leaves. During her time on Thacher Island, Maria developed an interest in the classification of marine plant life. She assembled an important collection of sea mosses and algae, and became a recognized authority on the subject. She also learned to perform all the light-keeping duties of her husband.

Ready! Aim! Art?

Deb Clarke gave me the “Heads” up on this Info. So I knew it must’ve had something to do with Art.

Is it Art?  Is It Intelligent Design?   What do You think?

Urinal Art

This Just in from designer-daily.com;

“Sometimes your mind wanders in the most unusual places. It happened to me the other day as I was releasing the few extra beers I drank, and found myself concentrating on that little fly in the urinal. Then I thought about how that little insect made life a little better for the cleaning people who probably have less to clean, and for the customers of the place who have had a little more fun while in the restrooms (yes it doesn’t take much for a drunk guy to have fun).

So if you think about it, this simple drawing of a fly improved everybody’s life a little. But how?

  • By staying simple.
A common advice for webdesigners is: “Don’t make the user think”. In our particular case, the urinal user doesn’t think and just follows his instinct: he pisses on that damn annoying fly that’s teasing him.
  • By understanding the user’s needs.
In the urinating situation, all the user needs is a little guidance to focus on keeping the place clean, without even thinking about it. If the user instinctively knows what to do, your design is good.
  • By making a clever use of white space.
Less is more, every designer knows this sentence I guess. If you designed this, many clients would probably have asked you to make the fly bigger or add more flies, which would in both cases be totally useless.”

Winter 2010

Classes on Offer, Gallery Viewing by Appointment

Dear Joey,

Winter is a time on Cape Ann where we tend to hibernate and wait for warmer weather, but it helps to keep busy to pass those short days and long nights without going stir crazy. Please consider taking a class or dropping by to view some paintings.

Drawing and Painting Classes

Close-up of Brush FerrulesWinter is a great time to learn a new skill you want to use in the warmer months. Whether you’ve always wanted to be able to join those easel jockeys out at Halibut Point on warm summer evenings, or make sketches of places you visit on vacation, I can help you develop the skills. I hold a drawing class on Tuesday nights from 6 to 8 p.m., and a painting class (any medium, including pastels) on Saturday mornings from 10 to noon.

If you’re interested, please contact me via email to sign up. Classes are $25 each session or 10 sessions for $180. More information can be found at ankenystudio.com.

Gallery Viewings by Appointment

Church SunsetAlthough I don’t hold regular gallery hours during the deep winter months (it’s commonly known that most retail is pretty dead between New Years and Tax Day) I’m still available to open the gallery for private viewings by appointment. If you would like to stop by and say hello, or have a particular painting you would like to see, please give me a call at 978-281-2803, or you can drop me an email at kurt@ankenystudio.com.
