From The Site-

Ready to represent the storied Northeast fishing community of Gloucester, Gus (the captain), Nino (the engineer), and Joe (the deckhand) are three old-school Italian fishermen with small town values and big time hearts. Bonded together by blood (Gus and Nino are brothers, Joe is their cousin), they also work side-by-side as crewmates aboard the Captain Dominic. They believe their experience working together under pressure and routinely risking their lives while out at sea gives them an inherent "toughness" that will help them win. We’ll see if that’s the case.

Homie Fed Up With Paparazzi Steve Borichevski Captures The Action

Hi Joey,

I came across this scene this morning and though that it would be pretty cool to grab a shot of Homie by his logo. But as the events unfolded, it was cleat that he’s just fed up with the paparazzi and has hit the skids again.

Roger Cressey- Gloucester Guy Gone Big Time

Roger is I think s a year or so ahead of my class and I believe he played on The Building Center’s Babe Ruth team.

Here are a bunch of his video clips

Roger can be seen reporting for NBC like he was this weekend.  He’s even got his own wikipeidia page-

Cressey received his Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 1987 and a Master of Arts in security policy studies from George Washington University in 1991.[2] He has taught a graduate course on U.S. counter-terrorism policy at Georgetown University,[3] where he is currently an adjunct professor.[2]

Cressey worked at the Department of Defense, including as Deputy Director for War Plans. From 1991–95, he served in the Department of State, working on Middle East Security issues. He has also served overseas with the U.S. Embassy in Israel and with United Nations peacekeeping missions in Somalia and the former Yugoslavia.[3]

He was Chief of Staff to the President’s Critical Infrastructure Protection Board at the White House from November 2001 to September 2002. From November 1999 to November 2001, he was Director for Transnational Threats on the National Security Council staff, where he was responsible for coordination and implementation of US counterterrorism policy. During this period, he managed the U.S. Government’s response to the Millennium terror alert, the USS Cole attack, and the September 11th attacks.[3]

In 2002, Cressey founded the corporate security company Good Harbor Consulting.

An on-air counter-terrorism analyst for NBC News, Cressey has been awarded the State Department’s Meritorious and Superior Honor Awards, and the Defense Department’s Exceptional Civilian Service Award.

BREAKING NEWS!!! WE CAN FINALLY OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCE IT! THE SANFILIPPO BOYS ARE ON MARK BURNETT’S EXPEDITION IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!

This One Has Been Killing Me to Keep Under My Hat!!!!

Cast-

Gus Sanfilippo, 48, Gloucester, MA, fisherman
Nino Sanfilippo, 43, Gloucester, MA, fisherman
Joe Sanfilippo, 44, Gloucester, MA, fisherman

From Lynette Rice On Inside TV

ABC announces cast for ‘Expedition Impossible’ (Yep, its another amazing race coming to you in June!)

EXPEDITION-IMPOSSIBLE

Now that Mark Burnett is stealing some thunder away from American Idol with The Voice, is he now hoping to suck a little steam out of The Amazing Race?

You be the judge: Burnett is the man behind a new summer reality show for ABC dubbedExpedition Impossible, which features 13 teams of three players who will travel across deserts, mountains and rivers in the “exotic, fabled Kingdom of Morocco.” Fun? Each week a new stage of the expedition will be revealed to the competitors, who must find a way to work together to complete the trip. After 10 legs of competition, one team will cross the finish line.  Winners each receive $50,000, a Ford Explorer (nice product placement) and the privilege of never having to be called members of the Fab 3, Mom’s Army, or Grandpa’s Warriors ever again.

You think we’re kidding? Check out the monikers given to the 13 teams, which start the expedition on Tuesday, June 21. (My money is on the fishermen. Not so much for the gypsies):

Here’s Joe Sanfilippo and dory partner Marc Duval Getting In Some Early Season Dory Race Training

and after a hard fought Dory Race Win-

You may recognize Joe Sanfilippo from his interviews down at the dock, he is one of our lobstermen.  If not here he is in the RunGloucester Race-

Here’s Nino Sanfilippo Taking Home The 1998 Greasy Pole Flag-

Here is Joe Sanfilippo’s Chevy pick up truck.

Joe carries the normal stuff that skiff lobstermen carry in the back of their pick up trucks- fuel jugs, water jugs, covered fish totes to put bait in, some random buoys.

What you might also notice in the back of Joe’s truck are the dory oars and bench set up that he uses to train for the upcoming International Dory races. Joe is an avid rower and always a contender to represent Gloucester with his partner in the International Dory Races between Gloucester and Lunenburg.

He lobsters out of a 22 foot Eastern skiff after work and on weekends with his son Ryan.

Kat Valentine Tutorial: Selling eBooks Directly from Your Site or Blog

Hi Joe,

Ever since I wrote my series on indie publishing I’ve gotten a lot of requests to explain how to sell e-books directly from one’s own blog or web site. So I wrote a tutorial that your readers might find useful. It is on my blog:

Tutorial: Selling eBooks Directly from Your Site or Blog

Selling books for e-readers through Kindle, Nook, Smashwords, etc. is easier than ever but, with a little bit of work, you can also sell your eBooks directly from your own web site or blog. You can set your own price and the only cost to you will be what Paypal deducts for their services. I have sold hundreds of books and knitting patterns in PDF format this way. Below I’ll walk you through the steps you’ll need to take to do this. All the images below can be enlarged by clicking on them. What you will need are:

  1. Your manuscript in e-book format – PDF, HTML, TXT, DOC, EPUB or any other.

  2. An online storage site. If you have your own web hosting site that will work. If not you will need an online storage service like Dropbox, LiveDrive, etc. If you do a search for “online file storage” you can find one that will work for you.

  3. A Paypal account that is upgraded to a Merchant Account. If you already have Paypal you can use that by just upgrading the account. It’s free.

  4. A web site or blog where you plan to sell your books.

Giving Diapers, Giving Hope Foundation

image

Kristen McCarthy Writes-

Hi Joey,

I wanted to contact you because my friend and I have started a local foundation and we were hoping you would help us get the word out. We are running it as a non profit but haven’t legally gotten non profit status yet.  Anyway, in December my unemployment ran out.  I was laid off of my teaching job in NY and am a single mother to 2 young kids.  After I had lost my unemployment, I remember thinking how grateful I was that I had chosen to cloth diaper my children because if I didn’t already have cloth diapers, I had no idea how I would have been able to get diapers because I was broke and no government agency provides diapers.  This led me to wondering what people who don’t cloth diaper would do in a similar situation.  I then found recent articles showing that people without the money to buy disposable diapers will leave the diapers on as long as possible or rinse them out and put them back on the kid.  Neither of these practices are healthy for children due to the chemicals in disposable diapers and being exposed to their own excrement for long periods of time.  So I decided that I would start a local non-profit foundation which lends cloth diapers to low income families.  My friend Emily Glover, also a Gloucester resident, joined me in this cause.  We named the organization "Giving Diapers, Giving Hope".

We would be very grateful if you could help us promote this because the more people that know about it, the more people we can help.  Also, we are running on donations of any kind of diaper related item and of course we are accepting monetary donations as well, to pay for new diapers and repairs.

Please contact us if you have any questions or want more information.

Thanks!

Kristen McCarthy

Kim Smith Says To Get Out Those Hummingbird Feeders ASAP!

Dear Gardening Friends, In a future post I plan to bring you more about the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, today however I will be brief. This is a reminder to set your hummingbird feeders out as soon as possible. This past week, sightings of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird have been reported as far north as Maine–the northward hummingbird migration is full underway!

A hummingbird’s diet is 90 percent insect. Just the same, we can lure them to our gardens by providing nectar-rich tubular-shaped flora in shades of red and orange, along with flowers comprised of small florets that attract small insects. At this time of year there isn’t much to offer in the way of flowering sustenance for the hummingbirds. Several weeks ago I took our feeders out of storage, gave them a good wash with vinegar, soap, and water, filled them with a sugar and water mixture, and hung them throughout the garden.

The eye-cathing Red Riding Hood tulips (although not a particularly good source of nectar, will attract by the sheer brilliance of their color) are a wonderful species tulip that reliably returns year after year, and multiplies. The tulips are planted beneath the boughs of flowering and fruiting trees and shrubs, in hopes, that they too will lure the hummingbirds to our garden during their northward migration. And then, again with high hopes, that the hummingbirds will nest in our garden. For the past five years or so, it has been our great good fortune to host throughout the nesting season female Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and offspring.

Hummingbirds, along with bats and certain species of moths, have an unusual method of drinking nectar called swing-hovering, which allows them to nectar while in mid-air. Ruby-throated hummingbirds expend vast amounts of energy during their migration–averaging approximately 52 wingbeats per minute. For this reason, I find the best hummingbird feeders are those that also offer a a place to perch while feeding (see photo and videoclip).

Sugar water recipe: 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. Stir to dissolve thoroughly. Never add red dye or replace the sugar with honey. Provide fresh sugar/water every 4 – 5 days.

Felicia Mohan grew up waiting for Easter so she could eat these cookies her grandmother made. After her grandmother retired in Florida and was no longer around for Easter, her Aunt assumed the responsibility and now she has herself. The secret is to use this Italian pastry dough recipe, decorate your own Easter eggs with your kids, make a simple frosting using fresh lemon, and top with brightly colored sprinkles.
