Extreme Snow Date, Sunday April 5th
(Just kidding…we hope!)
(Inspection 1-6)
6 Lexington Ave.
Magnolia Village in Gloucester, MA
The reason the header in the upper left corner reads “Don’t believe your eyes” is because of our 200+ lots we always have at our auctions, we only get to post a small percentage of photos. And since auction lots come in right up until the day of the sale, there are always a lot of surprises. And often the best items in the auction, are not even shown in the photos.

This will be another one of our CASH AUCTIONS, so please know that CASH will be the only accepted form of payment.

Here’s what the cat has dragged in so far:

ART: A large o/c painting of a ship by Robert Alexandar, vintage lithographed calendars from the Cape Ann Tool co. of Rockport, MA, an etching by Geo. Harvey Wainwright of Annisqaum, & more paintings, prints, antique photographs & tintypes etc.

We’ll have our usual 200+ lots crossing the block.
Please bring your own boxes and packing.
There’s no snackbar on the premises, but we’re tucked in between Dunkin Donuts & The 525 (Magnolia’s great new restaurant!)

BREAKING NEWS: BACKYARD GROWERS CUTEST BABY CHIC FUNDRAISER EVER IS UNDERWAY!!!

https://instagram.com/p/08JlRPDypg/

Welcome adorable chix!

Backyard Growers was kind enough to allow GMG to photograph Main Street’s newest residents (albeit temporary). There are four different families of chickens, with a triplet in each. The babies must be sold in groups of three because, as Meghan explained, when a new baby chicken is introduced to a flock, if they don’t come with their own posse, they may be bullied by the flock. The four chicken families are Rhode Island Reds, Silver and Gold Laced Wyandottes, Buff Orpingtons, and Easter Eggers, which lay blue eggs!

Baby Chicks Backyard Growers ©Kim Smith 2015

Buff Orpington is on the left, Easter Egger on the right (I think)

Lara and Meghan have named each family of chicks after a TV show, Downton Abbey and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, for example, and each chicken is named after a character in the show. See Backyard Growers Facebook page to find out the names of the chicks and visit their beautiful new website for more information on the Cutest Fundraiser Ever!

Chickity Check It!- “More than 250 million years before the first dinosaur, the most fearsome killers on Earth may have been lobsters”

Ancient, Predatory “Lobster” is an Ancestor to All Modern Arthropods

From Gizmodo-

More than 250 million years before the first dinosaur, the most fearsome killers on Earth may have been lobsters. Yawunik kootenayi, a common ancestor to spiders, shrimp and butterflies, was a predatory “lobster-like” creature that ruled the seas half a billion years ago.

As reported this week in the journal Paleontology, fossils of Yawunik were recently unearthed from Marble Canyon, part of the renowned Burgess Shale rock formation of British Columbia. This massive fossil bed holds specimens of many sea creatures that lived during the Cambrian period, the geologic era that saw a rapid diversification of marine life forms.

Cape Ann TV Lunch and Learn

Cape Ann TV Announces It’s Next

Lunch & Learn Event
“Online Marketing: The New Rules for Business”

Presentation by: Hans Riemer, President of Market Vantage LLC

(Gloucester, MA) – Cape Ann TV (www.capeanntv.org), a regional non-profit local access television station that serves all of Cape Ann, is pleased to announce the next learning experience in the popular “Lunch & Learn” series – “Online Marketing: The New Rules for Business”to be held on April 8th, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at Cape Ann TV (38 Blackburn Center, Gloucester MA 01930).

You need effective online marketing if you’re going to grow your business, but there are many roads you can take. Assuming you already have a website, you can attract visitors with ads through Google, Bing, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter just for starters. Then there’s SEO, social media and email, blogs and media buys.

Where do you start, and what should you expect for results? Can you do it yourself or assign this job to someone on your team? Should you hire an in-house expert or an outside agency to help you? Can your website designer do the job?

While each organization’s situation is different, there are some basic strategies every company should master. In this presentation, we will take a management view and separate the truth from the myths and rumors. We’ll highlight important trends and help you focus in the promising, challenging world of Internet marketing.

About the presenter: Hans Riemer has over 30 years of domestic and international experience working in marketing and sales for business-to-business technology companies – from startups to members of the Global 500.

As founder and President of Market Vantage over 10 years ago, Hans specializes in helping organizations develop and implement effective Internet marketing strategies that make a positive impact. Market Vantage optimizes organic search rankings, manages online advertising and continuously measures the results to reduce costs and improve ROI.

Seating is limited for this event. Please email: rtober@capeanntv.org to reserve your seat.

You’ve got to see — and hear — to believe!

Ruby Rose FoxYou know we love to put young, rising stars on stage with national touring artists.  Often the young talent comes from Cape Ann, but this time, we’ve got Boston Music Award winner Ruby Rose Fox and her stellar band opening for Martha Davis and The Motels on April 22, right down the road at Beverly’s Larcom Theatre.

Just the thought of these 2 powerhouse voices on the same stage sends shivers up my spine.  Check her out!

In this excellent, in-depth article by Bill Copeland, Ruby says “I think it took me a long time until I could sing in the place where my voice lived.”  Truly the words of a poet and a dynamic singer-songwriter.  Don’t wait until the last minute.  Get tickets now, RIGHT HERE and be sure you’ve got a great seat to this super-hot show!

Extraordinary Footage of Elephants Rescuing Drowning Baby

Applauding Ringling Bros. decision to retire its circus elephants. The 13 traveling Asian elephants will be sent to the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Center for Elephant Conservation in central Florida.

“Take the L out of Lover and it’s Over” – April 22

Don’t you just love that line?  It’s the chorus of this MTV smash hit by Martha Davis and the Motels.

You can see her and the band LIVE, just down the road at Beverly’s Larcom Theatre on April 22 during what is shaping up to be 80s week, with the Smithereens performing there on April 25.

Tickets just went on sale to the public today and they’re selling fast, so you might want to get them (RIGHT HERE) before it’s too late.  Here’s what the critics say:

“…arguably the most charismatic female performer in rock.” – Robert Hilburn, The Los Angeles Times

“Martha Davis, of the Motels, was still strong in voice and admirably delivered hits like ‘Only The Lonely’ and ‘Suddenly Last Summer.'” – Hollywood Reporter (about recent Hollywood Bowl Concert)

And here’s another of her top 10 hits, “Only The Lonely”:

Happy International Women’s Day!

I am looking forward to celebrating International Women’s Day, or Festa Della Donna, tonight with friends at the Gloucester House. We’ll be honoring Mayor Romeo-Thekan!

I was curious about the yellow flower that is traditionally given to women on International Women’s Day and it is the mimosa flower (Acacia dealbata), which has become a symbol of female solidarity. Immediately following World War II, it became popular in Italy to give the flower for La Festa Della Donna because of its cheery hue, sweet scent, and abundance in blossoms at that time of year.

450px-Acacia_dealbata-1

International Women’s Day began as a day of memory and protest, following a tragic event that took place in 1908. One story of its origins purports that in early March of that year, the women textile workers (mostly Italian) at a New York City factory went on strike to protest the abhorrent working conditions. The owner blocked all of the exits to the factory and set the building on fire. The 129 workers trapped inside all died.
