Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken invites interested residents of Gloucester to join with her and the Committee for the Arts to begin a Public Conversation on the Arts on Thursday, May 14th, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in the Kyrouz Auditorium at City Hall. The purpose of this facilitated discussion is to solicit ideas on what a public arts policy should look like. The meeting is not about individual projects, works of art, or location but about what should guide the City as it makes decisions on this important subject. “I am committed to carefully and thoughtfully considering issues related to the selection and siting of public art in the City of Gloucester and the upcoming Public Conversation on the Arts will be an invaluable tool,” said Mayor Romeo Theken.

work by local artist, George Martin, is now on display at its
Gloucester branch – 207 Main Street – through July.
George is an award-winning painter and graphic designer who was born in Massachusetts in 1951 and resides on the North Shore. Graduate of Vesper George School of Art, Boston, he studied under Robert Douglas Hunter, Robert Cormier, and Charles Cooper, among other noted Boston artists. He went on to earn a reputation as an outstanding graphic designer at a number of corporations and design firms. Since 2005, George has been as professional painter who has gained increasing recognition for his work. He is an artist member of the North Shore Arts Association and the Rockport Art Association. From 2011-2012, he served on the Board of Trustees as President of the North Shore Arts Association.
As George explains, plein air (open air) painting restores his passion for nature and awakens his senses. Influenced by representational and impressionist styles, his landscapes and other subjects are painted from life, memory and personal references.
“We are so happy to be able to welcome our third local artist exhibit at our Gloucester branch. We hope that everyone will consider stopping in to view this latest display by George Martin.” commented Bank President, Russ Cole.
About the program:
One artist’s work will be shown every three months; the first installation featured Katherine “Kim” Thayer’s work and Jim Clyde’s work was on display through April. George Martin’s works will be displayed through July 2015.

I’m not even necessarily a Johnny Depp fan. But his portrayal of Whitey Bulger in Black Mass is chilling.
So next year when he wins you can say your boy Joey called it. I’ll take Johnny Depp vs the field and I don’t even know who the field is, that’s how strongly I feel about it!
Here’s the trailer, tell me if you agree-

Please join us in welcoming ArtLifting to Cape Ann for a celebration of powerful art by homeless and disabled artists. A selection of ArtLifting originals will be hosted by LEXICON GALLERY from May 8 (opening) through June 21. During the opening, one of the artists will be sharing his very powerful story.Â

My man James Eves at Cape Ann Giclee is going to be the Admin and master of operations for our Cape Ann Arts Calendar.
It’s been tried a million times by well intentioned people. Building websites that will get traction on their own are nearly impossible. An art Calendar on it’s own may sound like a great idea but to start with zero viewers and build it up to 40-80,000 views a day like GMG has involves an insane amount of work and dedication. GMG has such a diverse subject matter which is what makes it such a monstrous hub of people’s daily media consumption. Just Food, or Just Industrial Waterfront or Just Music or Just Butterflies and Flowers or Just Art On their own don’t add up to one one hundredth of the sum of the whole.
So leveraging the insane number of viewers we’re going to offer up the Community Arts Calendar which is being developed as we speak by master design guy James Eves.
So if you have an art event coming up, instead of submitting it to me, you’ll be submitting it to James and he will add it to the calendar. Instead of the way I handle press releases of this type (as I get them I post them), it’s difficult to go back and see the whole calendar picture of what’s happening when. This way it will all be laid out for you in an easy to read calender with who, when, what, where.
So if you are a museum, individual artist or gallery, submit your press releases to James and he will get you listed.
GLOUCESTER, Mass. (April 10, 2015) – Two of four bronze doors from the granite faced pylons on top of the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge which brings Route 128 over the Annisquam River and into Gloucester are currently on display at the Cape Ann Museum. The doors were removed from the bridge late last year for much need conservation work and this will be the first time in over half a century that the public will be able to view the doors up-close.
Designed by sculptor John F. Paramino (1889-1956), the doors were cast at the T. F. McGann & Sons foundry in Boston in 1950. One honors the bridge’s namesake, A. Piatt Andrew (1873-1936), founder of the American Field Service, a U.S. Congressman from this district, director of the U.S. Mint and a long-time Gloucester resident. The second door celebrates the history of Cape Ann and in particular the fishing industry. John Paramino was born in Boston in 1889 to immigrant parents and studied modeling at the North Bennet Street School. He continued his studies under Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Bela Pratt and by 1916 had his own studio in Boston. Examples of Paramino’s public sculptures are scattered across Boston and include The Founders Memorial (1930) and the World War II Memorial in the Fenway (1947-1948).
Route 128, officially known as the Yankee Division Highway, was built between 1936 and 1958 on its current alignment as a bypass route around Boston. It was the first circumferential highway around a major U.S. city and now incorporates sections of I-93 and I-95. The A. Piatt Andrew Bridge is the crowning achievement of the decades-long Route 128 construction project and serves as a gateway to Cape Ann.
The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to offer Cape Ann residents free admission to the Museum on Saturday, April 18, in order that all may view the doors. In addition, the Museum will offer a narrated walking tour highlighting outdoor public sculptures in downtown Gloucester. The tour will be held on Saturday, May 23 at 10 AM. Tickets are $10 for Museum members and $20 for non-members. Space is limited, reservations are required. Reservations and tickets at (978)283-0455 x10 or info@capeannmuseum.org.
This project is a collaboration between the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the City of Gloucester and the Gloucester Committee for the Arts, and the Cape Ann Museum.

Hello, Joey! Some friends and I are former and current preschool teachers and enthusiastic artists in Lanesville–and we are having a messy art day for kids this Saturday, at the LCC from 10-12. I am the last minute announcer for this fun thing, but my daughter was also happy to help! Many thanks for the post in GMG! Mary Beth Periera

You know when you’re gonna have a party and it’s 15 minutes before you told anyone to show up and you wonder to yourself if anyone is going to show up? Like you know you’ve got the best friends in the world but no matter what, every time you’re just not sure if other stuff is going on that night or whatnot?
Well about a half hour in, the joint filled up to the gills and we were off to the races. James and Anna were so generous to produce the prints so reasonably that people could afford to purchase them (kinda like an art giveaway) and the days of preparation that goes into a show like this is just huge.
I hope if you couldn’t make it last night that you find time to mosey on down to Cape Ann Giclee to check out the show for yourself and if you have any type of digital reproduction work, that you entrust these over the top community minded folks to get it done for you.
Thanks to all our FOBs that came out and for the many many who I’ve had contact with through the comment section for years and finally got to meet last night.
It’s all love baby!
Cape Ann Giclee is open all week long if you’d like to pop in and maybe buy one of your favorite contributor’s prints. They’re only $60 and there was a ton of incredible work on display. Even if you don’t need a new piece, you ought to check out the show.
