Three Sheets to the Wind
The Schooner Adventure organization spawned Three Sheets to the Wind, a group of local musicians and Adventure crew members who are preserving the history of maritime work songs (chanteys) and forebitter songs.
Corwin Ericson
Corwin Ericson lives in western Massachusetts where he works as a writer, editor, and college instructor. He will read from his novel-in-progress, Swell, from which an excerpt was recently published in X: The Erotic Anthology, edited by Susie Bright (Chronicle, 2008).
Rick Drost
Rick Drost began singing with a Kingston Trio-style group in high school, continued in a small folk group in college, then a glee club and an opera chorus. He started writing and singing around coffeehouses in DC and New England in the ‘70s, finally settling in Cambridge MA where he started playing with the folk-rock group Parts and Labor. He performs at least once a week, wherever he goes, and has enjoyed stints with great instructors and students at Song School in Colorado, SAMW and other workshops.
Tom Hauck
Local author Thomas A. Hauck’s novel, Pistonhead, tells the story of Charlie Sinclair, guitarist in a rock band. His job is being outsourced. His best friend is a drug addict. His apartment is full of mice. The girl he loves is unattainable and his old girlfriend wants to dig her claws into him again. Pistonhead is the story of one week in Charlie Sinclair’s life — a week that changed him forever.
Ev Harlow & Friends
Ev Harlow is known for his wacky songs and goofball on-stage banter. His style has a country/folk flavor that is not often heard in these parts. He will have some very talented friends sitting in and having way too much fun!

Friday after work I drove downtown to grab a cup of iced tea and while circling to find a parking spot I saw Rob Schneider sitting outside at the Pleasant Street Tea Co. I found a parking spot in front of Passports and treked up with camera in tow to snap a shot. First walking past him I asked if he was enjoying his stay in Gloucester and he said he loves it and the people were really nice. I didn’t whip out the camera but instead went inside and grabbed a fruited iced tea drink (Pleasant St Tea Co makes some really refreshing iced tea BTW).
So I was going to sheepishly ask Rob if he would mind me snapping a quick picture for the blog and after paying for my iced tea inside a group of folks had gathered around him.
I’ll tell you he couldn’t have been more patient or accommodating. What a sweet guy. He took a little time with each person, signed autographs and made conversation, never looking distressed or trying to rush folks along. I snapped a quick picture while he was posing for some other folks and then headed back to Passports.
The Hive is equal parts working studio, gallery event space & clubhouse for the younger generation of Cape Ann creative folk. We formed early in 2009 to encourage art & idea collaborations, support systems and the creation of links between individuals and their community as a whole.
Mission
The Hive seeks to build community by providing a space for arts exploration, cross-pollination of ideas and promoting creative and active lifestyles on Cape Ann.
Our Blog
This blog is our mainline of communication. Content ranges from what’s happening at the The Hive, to what our contributing artists are currently working on, to general info of what’s going on on Cape Ann and the surrounding area.
Artists & Community
We are a pretty diverse crew, ranging both in our artistic styles as well as our passions. However, we find common ground in our vision to unite the creative & active community and make Cape Ann a more unique place. Check out our profiles to learn more about us.
Why?
For a place that has such a rich history with the arts, sometimes it feels like the current scene is much too focused on traditional fine art and is lacking on support for new mediums. Our gallery at The Hive sprouted from the fact that we have so many local friends doing interesting work, without a clear venue to show it.

I got to know Salvi when I worked for many years cooking at Sailor Stan’s. Two guys, two different backgrounds but we hit it off pretty well, especially when it came to relating the tales of our lives (it was my father who famously said, “any damn fool can tell the truth”).
It was also during my Rocky Neck years that the inspiration for both the song and the Sunny FishCakes (that name appeared to me on some barely decipherable ticket for a breakfast order that some waitron had just scribbled out).
So flash forward to this winter when we gathered musicians and friends into our West Gloucester home to record the song I’d been inspired to write by Salvi. Fisherman’s Ale and fiery burritos and a couple live take son the recording machine and we had our song, shaped by each of those present that evening. With the microphone still on, Sal shared his memories of the Greasy Pole and all of the fine folks and adventures his thoughts brought back. Doc Vincent caught it all and put the sound through his wayback machine. We had a blast making this recording and hope you’ll find something in it for you, too.”

This is the Essex River and Hog Island, directly across the street from where the Adam Sandler movie “Grown Ups” was being filmed last week. I went early in the morning and set up the tripod at 4:30 AM to take this dawn picture and to get a feeling for how accessible the set of Woodman’s was going to be. I didn’t feel like getting tossed from the set like the day before. So as I saw folks coming and going and I took this picture, I popped my head in to see the crew of people working like mad to put the inside of Woodman’s back together after filming all last week inside the building.
Yesterday morning I went back to Woodman’s to get some pictures when everyone was asleep or there was a skeleton crew but to my surprise there was a crew of about 20 people working feverishly to put the place back together to reopen for the weekend after filming all last week.

My buddy Brian (the rabbit) and I walked onto the set to try to get you folks some up close pics of the stars but we were rebuffed. Actually a more accurate description of what happened was we went into Dunkin Donuts next to Woodman’s and then took a sharp left onto the set and just kept walking until the security guy came and asked us to leave. Drat!
The things I do for you my readers!
Woodman’s building is completely covered in black tarps as they are shooting a night scene inside. What struck me funny is how they indiscriminately nailed strapping wood over the black tarp all over the old woodman’s building. There are going to either be a ton of nail holes left behind when that strapping is pulled off or they are doing to have to redo the siding.
At Alexandra’s Bread not only do they sell these cool bags made of oilcloth, but they sell rolls of vibrantly designed oilcloth for you to make your own things with. Placemats, table cloths, drawer liners- there are many uses.

At the Cape Ann Beer and Blog meet-up at Cape Ann Brewing Kalesy rolled up carrying this bag made from seatbelts. How bad ass is that when you think about it? You gotta figure this thing can take a beating if it’s made from seatbelts. After googling it I found the website of Harveys Seatbelt Bags
I love companies that embrace social media and Harveys site is a prime example. They actually have a Blog called SeatbeltBlog, check it out.
