Don’t forget – origami class at The Annie tonight!

Tonight (Tuesday, July 17) I will be teaching an origami class at The Annie, starting at 7PM. I’ll start off with some simple models, and will work up to more difficult designs as time and the ability of the participants allows. Among other things, we will fold a basic boat, and a bird that flaps its wings. If you are already an advanced folder, this class is probably not for you – but I’d love to meet you, and maybe set up a regular meeting for an origami group for folders of all skill levels.

Folders of all ages are welcome, although children should be accompanied by an adult. I will provide paper, but if you have your own favorite origami paper (kami? duo? washi? chiyogami? foil?), feel free to bring it along too. You can purchase origami paper locally at Island Art and Hobby (on Main Street in Gloucester), at the Liberty Tree Mall (at Michael’s or A.C. Moore), or on-line at Origami USA (members of the organization get a discount, besides access to other resources and the annual convention) or at Amazon.com.

The Annie is a non-profit, and requests a $5 donation per participant to help cover costs of operation. It is located on Washington Street, just north of the intersection with Main Street, in the Blackburn Tavern building (on the floor above Giuseppe’s).

Burnham House Canvas Is At The GMG Gallery

image

77 Rocky Neck Ave. Khan Studio GMG Gallery. Swing by tomorrow morning for Mug Up 9:00 Sunday morning for coffee and to bring this baby home.

20×24 Canvas Print Of The Burnham House At Dawn Just Came In

I normally order 16×20 but they offered a 20×24 for only $25 bucks more so I ordered it up. It’s a pretty substantial sized piece.  The colors are ridiculous, the exact reflection of the house in the still water in front of the Burnham House is wild. As a matter of fact The Bean asked me to hold it upside down to see it from that perspective..

So if someone wants it, it’s $150 and ready for hanging.  No framing necessary (the reason everything I do now is canvas framed).

Email me at goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com.  It’s available for immediate pick up.

Cape Ann Giclee

With years of experience in printing and finally moving their business out of their basement they have a new shop at 20 Maplewood Ave. in Gloucester. Printing on their Epson printer, with 12 inks,  gives them lots of color flexibility. They use many different papers to print on including eco-friendly bamboo and metallic photo paper and are open to experimenting on different mediums with artists. They offer competitive pricing with on demand printing options.  So, you don’t have to ship out your artwork or order 100s of prints. You can even 1 at a time for a customer and have it shipped to your customer’s home.

Artist, Sefan Mierz is one of their very happy customers! He was so happy with his giclee order and amazed by how well the colors matched the original oil.

Did You Know? (Summer Pie Theater and Tales of Bong Tree Island)

That Dona Lambert and her troupe at Summer Pie Theater Playhouse in Rockport want to be the first to do a production of Tales of Bong Tree Island?  But before that can happen, we have to make Tales of Bong Tree Island a reality.  Without your help, in 2 days, the owlpusses with their great wisdom and teaching of acceptance and tolerance to young people, could become extinct.  Please support them and this project, at whatever amount you can (you can pledge as little as $1.00).  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1997277714/martines-owlpuss-interviews-and-tales-of-bong-tree

About Dona Lambert and Summer Pie Theater:

Dona Lambert has been imaging stories her entire life.  On the farm she grew-up on she created magical kingdoms in the woods.  Every Summer with her dad she turned a tiny chicken coop building into a little theater and performed plays.  Dona has a B.A. in speech and dramatics. She has been a teacher in grades  K-8 and recently taught the in-school drama at the Rockport Middle School.  She was a program director with the YMCA in Maryland and New Jersey for many years.  Dona’s theater and stories with the children has always been a part of whatever other pursuit she was involved in at the time. The Summer Pie Play House is very much a piece of the little chicken coop theater from Dona’s childhood farm once upon a time.   It is children in their imagination, building, inventing, relaxed, and happy.

Dona has been conducting children’s theater mainly in Rockport and the surrounding area since 1998. Her Chicken Coupe troupe this season performed ROBIN HOOD And Monty Python………..and the 21 chickens.  Dona directed the Art Harbor Camp at Windhover for five years.  Dona’s Troupes now rehearse and perform at The Unitarian-Universalist Society in Rockport.

I think Dona’ Summer Pie Theater is the perfect venue for the first stage production of Tales of Bong Tree Island.  Thanks for your help in making it a reality, EJ

WED, July 11 : Lisa K. Rosenstein, Introductory Slide Presentation, 7pm

Cut Me Loose

Lisa Rosenstein, a graduate of the Corcoran College of Art and Design and from Washington, D.C., is a multi-media artist whose recent work has focused on a unique approach to using a limited means toward achieving a great variety of evocative imagery. Using the reductive capability of white paint and found objects, she has created intimate yet powerfully meditative and reflective works, which she has described as "altars".

"For the past three years, I’ve been working exclusively in White with a focus on shadow, texture, pattern and dimension. This work evolved into 3-d and recently has left the canvas and gone to the floor in the shape of handmade, unstructured "nets" which I can hang on the wall as free-form sculptures."

Group Shows at the Cultural Center: JULY 18-AUGUST 6 and AUGUST 9-27

See the updated show entry form that you can fill in on line and email to art@rockyneckartcolony.org by July 10th

Artist members of RNAC are encouraged to submit proposals of art in 2 D / flat media (painting, photography, mixed media, printmaking, etc.) to hang on two sections of wall at The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck. Each exhibition will feature six or seven artists.

Please complete the entry form with contact information, a brief description of the art to be exhibited with the theme, if there is one, framed sizes, media and jpegs for at least three of the proposed artworks for curating and promotional use. With the goal of raising money to acquire the Center building, the RNAC will take a 50% commission on the sale price of each piece of which 30% will go to overhead and 20% towards the building fund. Throughout this initial fundraising period, rental or hanging fees will be waived. To assure visibility for the artists and their work, we will require gallery sitting. S

Selection process: Proposed art will be chosen to complete both shows with a balance in style, media, and size. It will be curated for overall content and visual impact but these are not juried shows. Those not chosen will be placed on a list for future shows.

ART SUBMISSION FORM Please complete the revised entry form and return with jpegs of at least 3 pieces of the proposed art by email to art@rockyneckartcolony.org no later than July 10. Multiple pages of this form can be submitted. Selections and notifications – July 13.

Art and inventory sheet must be delivered on Monday, July 16, between 12 and 4 pm. Art from the current must be picked up same day. Please note the date change.

It is recommended that those interested see the newly installing hanging system at the Center (open this Saturday and Sunday 12-4 pm). At the same time, take a look at the current show – on exhibition until July 16th. Hope you plan on participating in this Call for Art.

Benjamin Moore mural

It’s easy to take it for granted that we live in a city with lots of beauty, so it’s good to be reminded now and then that we are surrounded by works of art and ingenuity. For instance, I like this mural on the side of the Benjamin Moore store on Railroad Ave. – not just because it’s well painted, but because it is somewhat self-referential: a painting (on a paint store) of painters painting the wall they are painted on…

Eventually I plan to get photos of more of our city’s murals…

Do you Support or Oppose Tolerance and Freedom from Discrimination?

In the time I’ve lived here, I would say that most people I’ve met would support tolerance, freedom from discrimination, and the teaching of tolerance and acceptance of others to youth.

Tales of Bong Tree Island is a book about tolerance and acceptance of others, and the freedom to choose who to love without fear of discrimination, as told from the perspective of the owlpusses, the descendants of the owl and the pussycat, a trailblazing interspecies couple from England who Edward Lear made famous in the 1870’s.

If published, Tales of Bong Tree Island has the potential to be a great tool for encouraging tolerance, compassion and acceptance of each other by people of all ages, but especially for the youth – the ones who are the future of our species.

If you support tolerance, compassion and acceptance of others, please support Tales of Bong Tree Island at whatever level you can.  There are only 9 days left in the campaign to raise the funds needed to print the initial run of the book and pay Kickstarter and Amazon fees.   There are great rewards for backers.
