Henry Cooper Submits Marina Evans Video from Granite Visions
Hi Kim,
The GMG post looks awesome, thanks for tagging Granite Visions in it. Granite Visions is a video production project between my friend Michael Kelly and myself. We have a few videos on our youtube channel: www.youtube.com/granitevisions. We’re working on a website.
One of our latest projects is a really great looking interview and 2 music videos featuring Cape Ann singer/songwriter Marina Evans. Any way we could get these on GMG?
Thanks,
Henry
Hi Henry, I posted Unbound and provided the link so readers can check out your YouTube channel here. Best wishes with your new website!

Beautiful Creamy Panna Cotta by Willowdale’s Chef Bennie Lightbody
Today at Willowdale we celebrated our dear friend Sarah’s new baby-on-the-way. Lots of fun was had by all and Sarah was truly surprised. I’ll post photos tomorrow after I have a few minutes to sort through, but wanted to share about this fabulous, elegant and simple desert that Bennie Lightbody, Willowdale’s Executive Chef extraordinaire, created for the shower.
Panna Cotta, which means cooked cream in Italian, is made by simmering cream, milk, and sugar with a very small amount of gelatin. The pudding is eaten all around Italy, but is thought to have originated in Piedmont. Bennie served the Panna Cotta with a coulis of mixed berries along with the whole fruit. Pure Heaven!

Bluets in Bloom, or Quaking Quaker Ladies
Bluebird Nesting Box and Bluets
At this time of year, when you pass by a field with patches of white, stop and have a closer look. The Bluet’s tiny florets are actually a dreamy azure blue; the little bunches also “quake” in the seasonal breeze! Also called Quaker Ladies, the sweet petite blossoms attract Little Carpenter bees, Green Metallic bees, small butterflies, and the Meadow Fritillary Butterfly (Boloria bellona). Both nectar and pollen are the pollinator’s floral reward!

Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team Update
This is going to be a busy month.
We have a bunch of new furniture for our new office, so…
We will need to assemble it. Shelving units, file cabinets, desks.

The big office move is scheduled for this next weekend:
We (CAVPT and Kestrel) are moving our office from 15 Lexington Ave. in Magnolia to 186 Main St. Gloucester in Brown’s Mall right across from the police station. The plan is to do this on Saturday, May 17th. We will need help with this. If you have a truck or a van, we could use that too.

Saturday May 24, 2014, 9am-1pm. St. Peter’s Square, Gloucester
Bring your donations to St. Peter’s Square at 7am on the morning of the sale. No TVs or computers please. We will need some volunteers to work at the sale too. And, we will have some stuff at our Magnolia office which will need to be moved from the office to the sale early in the morning on Saturday. How early? Depends on how many volunteers and trucks we get.
Next show:

As a result of the recent article in the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine, ‘Two Rick Roths Walk Into A Bar…’, Rick Roth and I have been invited to be on WGBH, Boston Public Radio on Friday May 16th from 1:35-2pm. Tune in and hear me make a fool out of myself in a new medium.
We need lots of volunteers in the next couple of weeks, so please get in touch and let me know if you can help out.
Thanks, Rick

New Butterfly Garden at Pathways for Children!
Pathways for Children “Before” Photo
This week we broke ground for a butterfly garden at Pathways for Children. I think it has been several years since Caroline Haines, the COO of Pathways, and I, first began discussing the possibility of a pollinator garden for Pathways. Then in the summer of 2012 we had an amazing Monarch Butterfly program for the children, and believe me when I write that it was truly a fabulous event because it just so happened that very day, several of the caterpillars pupated right before the children’s eyes! Caroline, the teachers, and the students had the “bug.”
After meeting with Caroline, Pathway’s Bernie Romanowski, and teacher Sandra, we determined the best use of the space would be to create an outdoor classroom within the flowering pollinator garden—no easy task as the front elevation is one long narrow sliver of space. Fortunately, though, the front of the building also faces primarily south, which is ideal for planting the most fun and colorful of butterfly, bee, and songbird attracting plants.
Bernie secured a bobcat for exactly two hours and proceeded to rip out the overgrown and diseased trees and shrubs. Under Bernie’s direction, we were then joined by a dream team of volunteers from Liberty Mutual who, in less than five hours, completely transformed the front to the beautiful canvas you see below. A fence, two- foot wide trellised pergola, and table are yet to be installed. And, the Manchester Garden Club has graciously offered to lend a hand with the planting!
The Amazing Can-Do Bernie Romanowski
Stay tuned for more updates to come!

Gloucester High School’s Interact Club’s Pizza Taste Off Winners
I am the president of the Interact Club at Gloucester High school, and we held the Pizza Taste Off in April. We recently awarded the prizes to the winners, and took a picture of the overall winner, and are hoping that we would be able to get the picture and a short write up on Good Morning Gloucester! Here is the article I wrote and attached is the picture!
Raising nearly $2,000 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, the Gloucester High School’s Interact Club hosted a successful 7th annual Pizza Taste-Off at the Cruiseport on Wednesday, April 2nd. Standing by the motto “Service Above Self”, Gloucester High School Interact Club members and advisors put in a lot of time and work to make this event happen. With donations from thirteen different pizza places on Cape Ann, voting for Best Overall, Best Crust, and Best Sauce were all tough decisions. The winner of the Best Overall category was Surfside Subs (978-281-1700, 147 Thatcher Rd, Gloucester MA). Humbled by the win, Carl Barbara of Surfside Subs told us, “The pizza is new, we just introduced it last year. It’s a recipe I’ve been thinking about since last year. So me and my manager Frank (Carini) whipped it up and people have loved it. This year we entered the contest and we’re humbled to win.”
Close behind Surfside Subs was Captain Hook’s, and then the Magnolia House of Pizza. The title of Best Crust goes to Cape Ann Pizza, followed by Essex’s new Pearly Bakers. Best Sauce, for another consecutive year, is awarded to Sebastian’s Pizza. This event was a success, and the Interact Club would like to thank all of the supporters who came to the event, the volunteers, the pizza places who donated, the Cruiseport, and would like to congratulate all of winners, as the voting was very close!
Thanks,
Kelly Foster
Co-President of Interact Club
Happy Mother’s Day and Rock On Moms!
Saucer Magnolia and Another View of the Mabel Burnham House, Essex
No group of trees and shrubs is more favorably known or more highly appreciated in gardens than magnolias, and no group produces larger or more abundant blossoms.” ~ Ernest “Chinese” Wilson, botanist and plant explorer
Do you have a favorite flowering tree? If I had to chose just one, which would be very, very difficult because I LOVE all flowering tress, it might just be the Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia soulangeana). But ask me again when the dogwoods are in bloom! I would love to know what is your favorite spring blooming tree. Write in the comment section and let us know. And send a photo, too, if you’d like. Thanks!
Global climate change is causing extremes in weather worldwide. The horticultural problems created by a spring cycle of freezing-thawing-freezing temperatures are only going to increase. The gardener’s best defense is to plant species that can withstand these new horticultural parameters. I find the Saucer Magnolia, which blooms later than the Star Magnolia, a much better choice for New England gardens, where spring is fleeting at best and tree blossoms are often quickly ruined by frost.
