A recent blog by Paul Lamere of Echo Nest (in Somerville, MA) claims to have analyzed listener data from music streaming services to determine the most “distinctive” artists by state. His method is very interesting, if a tad wonkish (see his explanation here). Essentially the most “distinctive” artist for Massachusetts is the artist that is very popular in MA, but NOT very popular in other states — and, based on Paul Lamere’s study, that artist is Neil Young, who is scheduled to unveil his new, studio-quality music service and device called Pono, at 5pm today at South by Southwest (more here).
Artists LOVE this new sound. Check out what they have to say in Neil Young’s Kickstarter campaign for Pono, here. Even if Pono is a flop, the mere fact that people who make music are finally talking about good quality sound in the digital age is a major breakthrough. Who knows where this revolution will lead, but you can say you were there (even if only via the Internet) when Neil Young Started it.
I guess we should all be proud to live in Massachusetts! Perhaps the boys can play a little Neil Young tonight at Jalapenos in his honor!

PIANO CONCERTO AT CAPE ANN SYMPHONY ON SUNDAY MARCH 23
Cape Ann Symphony presents the world premiere Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by renowned pianist and composer Charles Floyd on Sunday, March 23 at 2:00 pm at the Cape Ann Symphony Performance Venue, Manchester-Essex High School Auditorium on 36 Lincoln Street in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. The March concert program also features the orchestra performing Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” and Brahms’ Tragic Overture. The Cape Ann Symphony concerts are held at the Manchester-Essex High School auditorium on 36 Lincoln Street in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. Manchester-Essex High School Auditorium is handicapped accessible. Ticket prices are $35 for adults, $30 for senior citizens, $20 for Young Adults (19-24 years old) and Free for children age 18 and under.
Cape Ann Symphony’s Open Rehearsal of the concert is Saturday, March 22 at 7:30 pm. at the Manchester-Essex High School auditorium. The public is invited to the Open Rehearsal during which Conductor Udagawa, guest artist Charles Floyd and the orchestra is scheduled to work on the music in the Sunday afternoon concert. Conductor Udagawa will take questions from the audience following the Open Rehearsal. Admission to the Open Rehearsal is $10 for Adults and Free for Children 18 and under. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last year or so, you’ve probably seen this guy. He’s won 10 Grammys and was nominated for an Oscar. Turns out, he has a condition, known as synesthesia, which causes him to “see” music as colors.
In this very short, fascinating interview, he explains what that’s like and muses with The Dinner Party Download host, Rico Gagliano, about a possible celestial “key” for writing music.

Green Crab Forum Offers Informative Presentation on Invasive Species

Boston– Since the early 1800s, the carcinus maenas, or more commonly known as green crabs, have been invading the waters off the coast of Massachusetts and New England harming native habitats as it continues to colonize. This invasive species has grown so rapidly over the years that it is now threatening marine wildfire, including fisheries that are harvested by local fishermen. If left unchecked, the devastating path created by the green crab population will not only have a lasting effect on oceanic life, but also on local economies.
Due to the dire situation, Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R-Gloucester), State Representative Brad Hill (R-Ipswich), and State Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante (D-Gloucester) have joined with Rowley Shellfish Constable Jack Grundstrom, and the Division of Marine Fisheries to offer a special open to the public Green Crab Forum on Monday, March 3rd to discuss the very real threat of green crabs.

“Green crabs pose a strong and growing threat to our shellfish resources, our shellfish industry, and the integrity and sustainability of our marshes and wetlands,” said Senator Tarr. “Confronting that threat is going to take a comprehensive effort and innovation.”
Green crabs, which are originally from Europe, feed normally on shellfish such as blue mussels and soft-shell clams. Due to the recent acceleration in size, the invasive species has become destructive to the survival of native species. In order to prevent further damage to the local marine habitat, planning and action must be taken immediately in a coordinated and responsible fashion.
Some highlights of the evening’s agenda include:
• A brief history of the green crab species;
• Impacts caused by the green crab; and
• Controlling the green crab threat.
“In order to prevent further destruction of our fragile marine ecosystem from the invasive green crabs, we as a region need to work together to protect the natural habitat and the shellfish industry,” said Representative Brad Hill (R-Ipswich).
“This forum is important so we can learn more about the eco-system and of natural predators not just the effects of overfishing,” said Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante (D-Gloucester).
OK, tonight most of us will be celebrating films, but Oscar night is also a perfect time celebrate great songs — and this is a particularly good year for song nominations.
Our two favorites are “Happy” by Pharrell Williams (the guy with the funny Smokey the Bear hat who won the Record of the Year Grammy with Daft Punk and Nile Rodgers) from the movie Despicable Me 2; and “Ordinary Love” by U2 from the movie Mandella: Long Walk to Freedom. I particularly like Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” video (not from the movie). Check out this dancing!
Among the Best Picture nominees is American Hustle, part of which was filmed down the road in Salem.

Using the language of symbol and metaphor, dreams paint pictures of our lives, and offer us guidance and creative inspiration. In this introductory gathering, we’ll learn a variety of techniques for making connections between dreams and waking-life circumstances, as well as how to talk about dreams with others, how to increase dream recall, keep a dream journal, and understand recurring dreams and nightmares. Bring your questions and, if you’d like, a dream to share.
Nancy Grace began teaching about dreams in 1989, and has given presentations on dreams at retreat centers, churches, therapy centers, and colleges including Harvard, Northeastern, and Berklee College of Music. She has trained in group dream work processes with UU minister Jeremy Taylor, and with Montague Ullman, M.D. She served for many years on the Board of Directors of the International Association for the Study of Dreams, and is a co-founder of the Cummington Community Dream Center in western Massachusetts, which has been meeting monthly for the past 10 years.
Rev. Sarah Clark will lead the service on Sunday, March 2nd. Her sermon is titled “The Dance of Age.”
