Hobbit House Studio

hobbit house studio

Joey will appreciate this.  I have operated as Khan Studio for eleven years.  Since deciding to open my studio here at 1 Wonson Street, I thought it might be time for a new name.  I’ve been thinking about it while getting the place set up and today remembered what Joey said when he came here shortly after I moved it.  He said: “I feel like I’m in a hobbit house.”  So I’m thinking Hobbit House Studio.  Do you think the name fits?

Call to Artists – Be a Part of the Excitement of Rocky Neck this Summer

madfish wharf

There are a number of seasonal gallery spaces available for the 2014 season on Madfish Wharf, 77 Rocky Neck Ave. near the Madfish Grille, Rudder and newly renovated Studio Restaurants.  For an artist, the Rocky Neck Art Colony is the place to be in the summer.  If you or a group of artists have thought about opening your own gallery space, this could be the perfect time and opportunity for you.  To learn more, email Niki Ahearn at nicoleahearn@comcast.net or text her at 617-543-2977.

How to Recognize Artists

art history

Now you can learn to recognize the 27 Cape Ann Artists and Photographers exhibiting at the Magnolia Historical Society Spring Art Show by coming to the show, seeing their work and maybe buying a piece to grace your home.  A great way to recognize and support local artists and the Magnolia Historical Society.

Thanks to FOB David Simmons for submitting the How to Recognize Artists of Paintings, Magnolia Historical Society for hosting and to Thom Falzarano for organizing the show.

What a Shitty Thing to Happen

what a shitty thing

Just how windy does it have to be to blow over a porta potty?  Bet Joey’s glad this isn’t his john at the dock, especially if it was being used at the time of blow over.  This one at the Cultural Center appears to be freshly cleaned out and only some of the disinfecting blue water spilled.  You can see I didn’t have to go far from home to cover this breaking news (thanks Wayne and Karen for pointing it out).

Tidal Pools under Ice

ice and tidal pools

Although I am really tired of ice, I thought these ice formations on the tidal pools were interesting.  It’s the first day of spring, so hopefully we won’t see any more of this until next winter.  Happy Spring!

Goldeneyes or Buffleheads?

goldeneyes or buffleheads

I thought they were buffleheads when I first saw them, but they appeared a little too large and weren’t diving constantly the way buffleheads usually do.  They were way off shore, so the photos aren’t great.  I think they are goldeneyes, but not sure.  Who knows?

Who sees Alvin?

chipmunk

He actually was really hard to photograph.  I could see him with my eyes, but when I looked through the camera’s viewfinder, he just disappeared in the tangle of branches, leaves and stuff.  I got the shot and then he dove into the leaves and was gone.

WTF! Crocodile on Wingaersheek Beach!

brendas crocodile

Breaking News!  Brenda Malloy was walking on Wingaersheek Beach around noon today and discovered this partially eaten crocodile (or alligator) carcass.  She estimates its length to have been at least 8′ long, as more than 4-1/2′ of it still remains.  What do you folks out there see – crocodile, alligator, baby sea serpent, and where did it come from?  It was right above the high tide mark, so if you want to see it, get out there before dark.  It is located on the beach in front of the stucco mansion with the red roof.

Pipers? Plovers?

pipers

There was a time when I would have known what these were, but they are cute and there were a bunch of them on the shore at Brace Cove.  Anyone know what they are?

Magnolia Historical Society Spring Art Show poster_spring2

After that, there are only 21 more days until the Spring Art Show at the Magnolia Historical Society.  From the icy grip of winter emerges a fresh new body of work by some of your favorite Cape Ann artists.  While it may not be the first Art Show of Spring 2014, it is lining up to the best.  Mark your calendars now, and pray we won’t have snow.

She Always Returns

better late than never

Normally winter is my time to be creative.  My life’s path took me on some unexpected twists and turns this fall and winter, which made it impossible for me to get into my creative space.  As I’m sure all creative people can attest, sometimes the muse goes away for a time.  I used to fret, believing she might never return; but in her own time, she always does.  She unexpectedly re-emerged a couple of weeks ago, and took me, as she always does, in a new direction.  These are a few new pieces I have completed.  This series is old and new.  It is a mixed media combination of my abstract photos of last year, coupled with the glass painting of the prior year.  While sorting things at my mother’s house, I came across a container of unused glass slides, which have and will make their way into many of these pieces.  I have never worked in a square format before, which I am really enjoying, having been inspired by my artist friend, Tom Nihan’s work.  All pieces are 8×8 multi-layered photos and glass paintings, and are whimsical and fun – just what I need now.  In addition to brushes, I am using rubber ducks and ear plugs to paint with.   Yes Paul, RD was instrumental in getting me going, although she has gotten a little messy with paint all over her bottom.

You can see some of my new work at the Spring Art Show at the Magnolia Historical Society Friday, April 11 from 6 till 9pm Opening, Saturday, April 12 2pm till 8pm and Sunday, April 13 Noon till 4pm.  More details coming soon.

Karen MacLean is a blue collar woman in her fifties who has risen in the business world to the point she gets to bury the extraneous divisions a New York mergers-and-acquisitions firm spits out.  Karen hates shutting down factory floor guys like her father, but the M&A outfit has promised she can have a company of her own, to run, once she buries her last body, the last fish processor in a hard-times Massachusetts fishing port.  She shows up in town, learns she’s going to be canned when she gets back to New York, and decides to buy and run the old plant.  She has skills and resolve and wins the help of townspeople, including a roughly charming fisherman, but the rest of it ain’t easy.
