Scenes and sounds from Cape Ann Symphony 65th Anniversary season Romantic Masters concert

IMG_20170326_152232

We were told that yesterday’s Cape Ann Symphony’s 65th Anniversary Season concert “Romantic Masters” was the orchestra’s most sold out March concert, ever. Great job, Heidi Dallin, on promotion!

My son spotted Heidi’s name in the playbill and Yellow Sub, along with many other local names and arts supporters. It takes a village.

By the way– kids tickets are $5 at these concerts. Area schools benefit from Cape Ann Symphony performance outreach.

Cape Ann Symphony’s next concert is: SCANDINAVIAN SPECTACULAR Saturday, March 20, 2017 8PM

Before setting off into the next piece, Musical Director & Conductor Yoichi Udagawa breaks down a mini music lesson excerpt with the orchestra. He has a signature foot lift when he conducts.

Here’s a snippet of glorious music. Can you name that tune?

Gloucester’s FisherMan at the Wheel original custom landscape chain design needs repair

The landscape chain design encircling the site of the world famous Leonard Craske Man at the Wheel sculpture is lovely and simple. The repeating rings are an aesthetic choice and practical. There’s an understated wide ‘berth’ that’s respectful yet beckoning; one indelible memorial and thousands of ripples.

Perhaps the broken post was a snow plow? Who knows. Wonder how often a break occurs?

The color photographs were taken this morning. The black and white photographs were by Gordon Parks from his 1940s FSA photographs. The granite cenotaph markers were added in 2000.

The Bragas’s highly anticipated second stand alone restaurant, the new Italiano Restaurant and Bar, will be opening at 64 Main Street well before people flock to our coast this summer. The former space of La Trattoria is being transformed by RS Construction which also built the Dunkin Donuts in Magnolia and the Azorean’s gorgeous bar expansion and function addition. The new restaurant has been under major construction for months because the build out is much more than a revamp.  The small kitchen is GONE. The entire former function space in the back is a brand spanking new kitchen.

In a city of incredibly good eats how do you make yours stand out?

An excellent reputation helps: the Bragas opened Azorean in 2007 which quickly established a legion of loyal customers with its unique and exceptional cuisine. Besides quality, hard work and experience how about that awesome historic West End location. Italiano Restaurant joins a tipping point where Gloucester’s West End meets Boston’s North End. Italy Magazine I propose your next article in the series, Where to find Italy in America?- Gloucester’s West End! Trio of white caps and the squinting gaze

Gorgeous Feb 23, 2017. Foreground capped with light layer of snow, artist adorned with snappy white fedora, and white caps on the water.

Who is this artist? The colors and texture of the landscape, that white hat, and straining eyes (mine and the artist)…well, it had me thinking Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid  ” Who are those guys?” and “white straw skimmer” (minus the “beginning to get on my nerves”)

Gail McCarthy at Sawyer Free to cover Cape Ann Reads picture book contest results !

Scenes from the Cape Ann Reads live reveal in the Byers Davidson Room of the Saunders House at Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Public Library. This March Madness snapshot just about sums up the feeling!

That’s Kate Bibeau, Programs Coordinator at the Cape Ann Museum, and Liza Browning, Museum Educator at the Cape Ann Museum, jumping up as another contestant identity is revealed to be…a colleague! Also smiling and enjoying the moment, Sawyer Free librarians Justine Vitale and Linda Bosselman, and author and artist Pat Lowery Collins. Kate and the Library Directors had not seen any entries so everything was a surprise. Jurors knew the books but did not know the names of the authors or illustrators as part of the process.

Kate Bibeau has been fantastic on the Cape Ann Reads steering committee. (She was Kate LaChance when the planning began…two years ago!) I took photographs as people were assembling.  Even better: we’ll soon see Linda Bosselman photographs of the unfolding countdown. They’ll be the real deal!IMG_20170318_081217 (1)

Beverly hosts a regional Massachusetts Cultural Council cultural districts gathering at The Cabot

The City of Beverly and The Cabot hosted a Massachusetts Cultural Council north shore cultural district meeting today. Concord will be hosting their regional meeting tomorrow. Currently there are 35 cultural districts across Massachusetts with 40 possible by the end of June. Women of Essex exhibit at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum opens this weekend

Slated to run in conjunction with National Women’s History Month, Women of Essex Stories to Share, will be on display most weekends from March 18-April 29. The show is hosted by Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum. Lee adds:

“The motivation for this exhibit was the recognition that, while our emphasis at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum has been on shipbuilding and the men involved with it, there were many significant roles of women in the community. Hence the exhibit Women of Essex – Stories to Share. This exhibit features about a dozen women that we are featuring individually in this first phase of the project. To help scope this effort, we are focusing this phase on women who are no longer with us. These include the women that were instrumental in building the first meeting house, one of the first woman auctioneers in the country, a female professional baseball player, a woman who was a motivator behind several town projects, several individuals active in the arts, and even an enslaved woman. There will be collections of several other groups of women, namely teachers and restaurateurs, an Essex mainstay.”
