Kin Hubbard Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

"There are two ways to handle a woman, and nobody knows either of them."
Frank McKinney (Kin) Hubbard (1868-1930)

image

Midwestern humorist, cartoonist, and writer known best for his political commentary, Hubbard was a high school dropout who said his goal in life was to own a circus. He worked briefly as a silhouette artist and attended art school for a short time before beginning cartoon work for the Indianapolis News.  For 25 years he drew the acclaimed cartoon “Abe Martin of Brown County” which went into syndication and made him nationally known. Will Rogers cited Hubbard as an influence and called him the greatest humorist of his time. Another Hubbard comment on sexual dimorphism: “Boys will be boys, and so will a lot of middle-aged men.”

North Shore Health Project Dinner and Award Wednesday at Jalepenos

image

Don Maier writes-

Joey:
I hope you can put this in GMG to help us publicize our benefit dinner at Jalapenos this Wednesday:
The North Shore Health Project, which has been helping local residents with HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C for 22 years, is having a benefit dinner at Jalapenos this Wednesday, 11/9. 10% of the food bill for either dining in or taking out will be kindly donated to the Health Project by Jalapenos. We hope you can join us for an evening of great food to benefit an important Gloucester organization.
I’m also attaching a flyer for the event.
While I have your attention, I’d also like to mention that the Health Project just received a $44,000 grant from Vertex Pharmaceuticals to continue and expand our work with Hepatitis C. This is money that will directly impact our community as it helps us improve the lives of our community residents by providing them with nursing, nutritional and peer support, counseling, holistic treatments, and housing assistance.
Thanks for all you do for the community!

Welcome The Latest Lobster Boat To The Gloucester Fleet- Pete Libro’s Cabaret V

DSC00653

The Cabaret V Is a Beast.   47 feet long and beamy as a bastard.   Big and roomy with plenty of deck space to shift gear and lobster like a lobster boat should- with the ability to move large numbers of lobster traps to areas where the lobster will be next.

On a small boat you are limited with the amount of gear you can shift and the weather you can fish.  On the Cabaret V Pete and his dedicated crew can fish rough weather comfortably and chase the lobsters by moving large amounts of lobster traps in front of the lobster moves to the deeper water and off shore.

Congrats Pete.

Here’s the article in The Gloucester Daily Times-

Have you ever wanted to walk Gloucester’s famed Greasy Pole?

Come Nov. 12, you’ll have your chance.

Launching its fund-raising effort to restore the Greasy Pole and its pier — damaged during Tropical Storm Irene, then dumped onto its side by high winds and tides Sept. 30 — the St. Peter’s Fiesta Committee is offering 120 people the chance to walk the pole during a program planned that day for Gloucester High School’s Newell Stadium.

"Out of the whole Greasy Pole structure, we were able to save the actual walking pole," said St. Peter’s Fiesta Committee President Joe Novello, whose group is seeking to raise $85,000 to fully cover the construction, permit fees and other costs connected with restoring one of Fiesta’s centerpieces. The drive has already received a $35,000 lift from The Boston Foundation, Novello said.

In the Nov. 12 benefit, the pole and its flag will be extended from a flatbed truck some 3 to 4 feet off the ground, with rubber padding beneath it to cushion the inevitable falls. And the first 120 people who sign up and cough up the $25 donation will get to walk the pole, in three groups of 40, Novello said.

St. Ann’s School Auction Fundraiser From Fr Matthew Green

Good morning, Joey!
The St. Ann’s School auction fundraiser last night was a great event. I wasn’t able to stay for the whole thing, but I snapped some photos while I was there. Unfortunately, I didn’t get everyone’s names to label the photos, but I have to run to preside a funeral now anyway so wouldn’t have time to label them all anyway…

Dr Nicole Writes-

So excited to get my GMG DropCam today!  There is still office space available upstairs with some of the most breathtaking views of GHB and Salt Island, so hoping the camera will reach to share that killer view, even better one floor up from me.  May need to contact the wonderful Mr. Tim Blakely of Gloucester Bytes for a wireless extender upgrade if needed.  Attached is a pic of him hard at work on the install of this amazing little gadget!  Thanks again for getting this going!
Also wanted to share these fun pics in honor of Halloween.  Dragons need to have their adjustments too, she’s roarin’ and ready to go after her visit!
Our next Cape Ann Healing Center workshops are coming up, drop-cam not streaming them live yet but planning that for spring with regularly scheduled stunning Cape Ann views in between.
Thanks again for all you do!
