Cynthia Curtis Pottery Holiday Student and Studio Potter Show

2012 photo for card

The holidays are coming and what better way to start your shopping than to visit Cynthia Curtis Pottery’s 7th annual Student and Studio Potter Holiday Show in lovely Rockport during the “Christmas in Rockport Gallery Stroll,” on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Located in the woods, not far from the Atlantic ocean and Cape Ann granite quarries, near the end of a road you will find a cozy wood-stove-warmed gallery that offers a beautiful collection of Cynthia’s work in her signature colors of the sea – blues and greens accented with sea glass. Inside her studio you will find pottery fashioned by current and past students and teachers, some of whom have gone on to open their own studios in the area. After 14 years of teaching, Cynthia’s classes have included over 1,000 students! Their work, and the work of their teachers, including functional and sculptural pieces, is innovative, compelling and gorgeous.

Connect with new and familiar friends at the Artists’Reception on Saturday, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Free admission, refreshments and plenty of parking. All are welcome! Come and support emerging and established artists.

Profits go to the Cynthia Curtis Pottery Class Scholarship Fund. The gallery is open throughout the holidays. Private lessons and weekly classes are offered year round.

SAFETY SATURDAY AT MAGNOLIA LIBRARY

Location: Magnolia Library, 1 Lexington Avenue, Gloucester, MA

Time: 11 am to 1 pm

Sponsor: Magnolia Library & Community Center

Ever wondered how to use a fire extinguisher? Curious what illicit drugs look like? Come to Safety Saturday on Dec. 1 to find out the answers.

Gloucester firefighters will simulate a house fire, by filling a trailer with smoke created from dry ice.

This smoke filled room is a training tool for adults and children to learn how to respond to a potential fire. There are real doors and the door knobs are heated. Firefighters will show you how to map out, and practice, an escape route.

Gloucester Police Department will have a display of illegal drugs. See what drugs crop up on our city streets. Officers will answer questions about how to identify drug users.

The K-9 Unit of the Police Department will be on hand, for demonstrations. (And even patting!) Visitors will have a chance to sit in a police cruiser or an all-terrain vehicle used to patrol Gloucester beaches. (?)A Gloucester Fire Truck will be available for kids and family photos.

For more information, call Jamie O’Hara, president, Magnolia Library and Community Center, 978-979-7533

GAAC Has Moved!

After almost ten years at the St Paul Lutheran Church, the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club has started to outgrow the space, and we have moved our monthly meetings to the Lanesville Community Center, right up the street.

The Community Center has a lot of space to grow, all the amenities we’ll ever need, and a nice dark area outside where we can set up scopes before and after meetings. This is a real plus. Maybe in the warmer months we can even do some guerrilla astronomy there for the folks in and around Lanesville.

Come and see us in our new digs on December 14, our Christmas party! We’ll have door prizes, a new video from NASA on Saturn and the Cassini spacecraft, followed by a presentation by our own Steve K on what’s up in the winter sky. And of course there’ll be plenty of Christmas goodies to eat and lots of good conversation. GAAC charges no dues or fees. See you there at 8:00!

Stuff I Don’t Get- Why People Stay In Places

There are certain things that I just don’t get.

One of these things is why anyone stays in a horrible ghetto-like neighborhood where there is a ton of drugs and gangs and crime.

What is it that keeps people there?  Like after the first stabbing on my block I’d gather up the belongings and family and hit the road.  Hitchhike or work for food down to Florida and work doubles or triples washing dishes or whatever I had to do to keep food on the table for my family.

The same goes for these war torn countries in the middle east.

Bomb goes off a block away- “Honey pack up the kids, we outtie!”  It would be that simple a decision for me.

What in the world keeps people hanging around waiting to get their ass blown up?

Not my idea of Home-

Uhmmmm, Yeah, No.

Lost Dog

Hi Joey,

Happy Thanksgiving 🙂

I found this dog this morning on Main Street and thought for sure we would have found her home by now.  She followed three little girls on bikes and they were worried she would get hit by a car.

Could you please post her picture?  She is very sweet and is waiting so patiently for her family to find her.  I know I would be worried sick.

Thanks so much!

Linn Parisi and the Discover Gloucester Board

Hello Joey,

Through our many connections in Gloucester, including our brother and sister, Officer Chris Frates and Erin Frates we have been introduced to your fantastic site about the comings and goings in your great town!

Our family’s world was thrown upside down this year when our 27 year old son Peter was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease.  Since March, we have rallied behind our remarkable son along with his many friends and our beloved community to help him spread awareness about this horrific disease.  The best way to learn about Pete, our family and our journey is to go to Pete’s website, www.petefrates.com .   There are many news items and newspaper articles there that have been written about our journey.

On Dec. 29th our Gloucester friends are planning a Plunge 4 Pete at Good Harbor Beach and a post plunge party at Bass Rocks.  I have attached a flyer to invite people to plunge or just sponsor a plunger.  Any help publicizing this event you can assist with would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

John and Nancy Frates

Note To Sandwich Makers Everywhere (Rant)

image

If you go and pile all the meat in the middle of the sandwich so you can cut it in half and make it look like you use all that large amount of meat throughout the sandwich but leave the edges devoid of meat I’m gonna find out you freakin dumbass.

…and I’m gonna feel like you were trying to pull one over on me.

…and is that really the message you want to send to your customers?

Yeah, you got me to buy your sandwich because it looked all loaded up with meat where you cut it down the center and displayed it wrapped in cellophane.  Once.

Who the hell wants to eat three quarters of a sandwich that’s all dry because it’s all bread and then get to the center where they cut it and not even be able to stuff it in your mouth?

It’s insulting.  Spread the goddamn meat out and make the best sandwich all the way through, first bite to last.

That’s just being honest.

What, do we all look like that big of idiots that we’re not going to realize what you did there?

(don’t answer that question)
