Gloucester Gig Rowers Getting After It In The Fog!

My View of Life on the Dock

The theme of the June 13 meeting of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club is “Come to a star party this year!”
What is a star party! How should one behave? What can we expect? When is the next one?
We’ll talk about star party etiquette, what you can expect to see, and we’ll let you know what’s coming up. For starters, we’ll talk about our Sun Day party on the boulevard, at the fisherman statue, from 5 to 9 on Sunday June 22, and our first Halibut Point star party from dusk to 10:00 on the 27th, with more to come later in the summer. And this year we’ve got a new star party to talk about, just a short drive away in Maine.
The main event at the June meeting will be a colorful and entertaining presentation by GAACster Dwight M. Lanpher on the upcoming 6th annual Acadia Night Sky Festival, held in Maine’s Acadia National Park at the end of September. Maine, luckily, still offers a relatively close really dark sky, and the festival Dwight will speak to us about is getting to be a major east coast event. We’re really looking forward to a fun and informative evening, and hope to see you there. Bring a friend, this is going to be a good time!
GAAC meets at 8:00 on the second Friday of the month at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Ave. Parking is free, and there are no dues or fees; it won’t cost you anything to come to a GAAC meeting, ever.

Hi Joey,
The Gloucester Marine Railway is a busy place these days. Everyone is busy getting their boats ready now that
we have some warm weather. The tug Towline is being painted. The Ardelle came out on Monday and was
powerwashed, Harold Burnham expects her to go back in Wed morning at high tide, about 5 a.m. The Adventure’s crew are
very busy painting, caulking, and replacing the outer section of the stem. Geoff Deckenbach expects her to go
back in on Wed evenings high tide, about 5 p.m. The Adventure will motor over to the Harbor Loop which she will make
her new home by the Maritime Museum. Meanwhile, the Phyllis A’s team is raring to go with her restoration, we are awaiting
word on when she can come up into dry dock. Workers pictured include Geoff, Manny from GMR, John Miles, Tony Finnociarro,
Sarah Tuvim, Katherine Richmond of KR Painting all on the Adventure, and Doug Parson’s with the Phyllis A. Michael Bergman
stopped by. He is very anxious to get back onboard to continue working on making the rat’s rails (ladder like structure up to the
top of the masts).

Hi Joey! I have attached a poster for a small exhibit of photographs
opening at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum this Saturday in case there
is room this week. We were given an album of photographs taken in the
early 1920’s by David E. Burnham and have enlarged some of them.
Although the photographer died in 1943, were he alive today I think he
would have been an enthusiastic GMG contributor. Thanks. Nancy Dudley

seARTS 2014 Partner With an Artist Program:
Call to Artists and Application Guidelines
seARTS invites artists to apply for Partner With an Artist Grants
Partner With an Artist (PWA), seARTS signature artist grant program, provides grants to artists to create new work — in any medium: visual, performing, multimedia art — in partnership with local businesses. PWA’s focus is to celebrate the arts, strengthen partnerships with the business community, and to promote a vibrant and culturally rich economy on Cape Ann.
The 2014 PWA program will connect with three of Cape Ann’s Cultural Districts: Essex River, Harbortown and Rocky Neck. Jurors will award three $1,500 grants, totaling $4,500, to artists who collaborate with a business in a Cape Ann Cultural District. One artist or project in each of three Cultural Districts will receive a grant. Each completed project will be presented in its Cultural District for the public to experience and enjoy.
Partnership with a business: This is an opportunity for artists and businesses to explore a creative relationship. We seek to fund innovative projects where artists and businesses work together to explore new opportunities only made possible by collaborating. A business might provide goods, services, or space for a project.
Creating opportunities for artists: PWA supports artists and encourages creative new work that connects to the local community and that will attract residents and visitors to explore and enjoy the Cultural District.
Grants: One $1,500 grant will be awarded to one artist in partnership with a business located in each of these three Cultural Districts: Rocky Neck, Harbortown and Essex Cultural Districts.
Please note: Projects in the Rockport Cultural District are not eligible. A grant was awarded in the Rockport Cultural District in 2012.
Phase One:
April – June 2014
Grant applications will be solicited by seARTS for artists collaborating with a business in each of these three Cultural Districts:
Gloucester’s Rocky Neck Cultural District
Gloucester’s Harbortown Cultural District
Essex River Cultural District
Phase Two:

One grant of $1,500 will be awarded to one artist collaborating with a business in each of these three Cultural Districts:
Gloucester’s Rocky Neck Cultural District

Went This Weekend With The Kids, Check It Out Some Time, Everything’s Made Of Paper
from the website-
About The Paper House
The Paper House is an actual house made from paper.
Newspaper.
It was built by Mr. Elis F. Stenman, a mechanical engineer who designed the machines that make paper clips, began building his Rockport summer home out of paper as a hobby. That was in 1922.The paper was meant to be good insulation. Eventually, not only was the house made of paper, but furniture as well, including some intricate and beautiful pieces.
For more about the background, read the interview with his grand niece. For an interesting look at what you’ll see, let’s step inside.
Here’s the website- http://paperhouserockport.com/index.html
