The precinct that is shown being reported in the video is the one that put Mayor Kirk over the top when she realized she had won. The piece of paper she tore up was her “I lost” speech. (Thanks Mayor Kirk for providing the video to GMG)
Dear Joe – I grew up in Gloucester in the 60s and 70s, one of seven kids, all of whom graduated from Gloucester High. I have been enjoying GoodMorningGloucester, and recently found the great reminiscences of Melissa Abbott on Gloucester in the 1960s and 1970s. Our father, Dr. Walter E. O’Donnell, came to Gloucester in 1960, started his own medical practice and eventually led a group practice that grew into Cape Ann Medical Center. I have lots of fond memories of going on house calls with him all over Gloucester and Rockport. Gloucester in the early 1960s was still a place where everyone made house calls. Every week, Bud Murphy from Railroad Avenue Market (naturally, not on RR Ave but on East Main St where the Last Stop is now) would show up at our door with all our groceries, including the greenest bananas he could find for my father. In a smelly symmetry, once a week Joe the garbage man, with his big smile under the dirtiest watch cap, would come by to collect our garbage, and haul it back to feed it banquet-style to the pigs at the piggery off Eastern Ave. And of course, we all remember the famous housecalls that Sylvester Deering made to that little white house on Stacy Boulevard – when the Cut Bridge broke, naturally in the upright position, Mr. Deering was the only person who knew how to fix it. My dad made hundreds of house calls a year, right up until he retired in 1989. My family and I have been reminiscing about Dad’s house calls, and wondered if any of your readers have any housecall stories to share.

MAYOR KIRK IS RESIGNING.
We’re doing a podcast with her on Sunday. I’ll just simply state for now that I think she was the best Mayor we ever had and the only person with the balls to stand up to the nimbys was in fact a woman.
She was unwavering in her support for many projects that will and have vastly improved our City. I didn’t agree with everything she did but I did agree with a whole lot. I just hope we don’t end up with a Mayor that treats businesses large or small as if they are evil and encourages responsible growth rather than trying to extort and discourage potential future investment.

You can see the path of Shark Katherine’s travels up and down the Atlantic Coast and In the Gulf of Mexico from the pings she sends out every time she breaks the surface of the ocean. not only do they have real time data on the latest shark pings, they have videos from when the individual sharks are tagged. Toby sent me this picture of someone who won the ugly sweater contest wherever he was at yesterday-
Well it seems like the whole ugly sweater contest has officially jumped the shark. You wanna know the precise moment when the formerly cool ugly sweater contest fad jumped the shark? Well let me tell you- It’s when cottage industries all over the place started producing “Official Ugly Sweaters” for mass marketing in department stores.
The whole point of Ugly sweater contests was to find one from way back in your closet or your dad’s closet, or a thrift shop. Anyone that goes out and buys an ugly sweater new off the rack that was actually designed as being an “Ugly Sweater” does not deserve a win.
In my opinion the all time ugliest sweaters were those Coogi sweaters worn by sportscasters in the 90s-
Second point of reference determining that The Whole Ugly Sweater Contest Has Lost It’s Cool Factor?
Every single sports franchise coming out with their ugly sweater jersey-
I’m not saying there should never be another Ugly Sweater Contest. What I Am Saying Is That Anyone That Buys An Officially Designed And Marketed AS AN UGLY SWEATER from the Get-Go Sweater, They should Not Be allowed to win the contest. Has to be vintage or get out of here with that new off the rack designed-as-an-ugly-sweater Ugly Sweater.
So Toby find that woman who took home whatever the prize was for winner of the Ugly sweater contest at your party and strip her of that title. She doesn’t deserve it. Only way she brings home the title in that contest is if no one else shows up in an ugly sweater at all.

Hey Joey – I’m wearing a different hat this afternoon: perhaps you can post our Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Library 2014 Annual Appeal notice & invitation on GMG, when you think the time is right, before the year is over, so folks can still get their tax deductions ! The “Wordle” or “Word Cloud” was generated by the audience at our Annual Meeting in October, and reflects views of what our library will be in the future (Notice the large “AC” for Air Conditioning, next to “Welcoming”, and “Accessible”….).

You likely are aware that 2014 has been a time of progress at your Library. There’s much that’s new, and more to come. I am writing now to ask you to help us maintain the momentum by supporting our annual appeal.
The most visible change is the John and Dorothy Rando Memorial Garden and Amphitheater and its surrounding gardens and plantings, ready for events as soon as weather permits. A new parking lot awaits you, too, with easy access from School Street. Your visits to the library are more convenient now, with self-service checkout available at the circulation desk and a handy book drop-off box in the parking lot. Many thanks to the Friends of the Library for both these service improvements.
In addition to all the physical changes, there have also been changes in our staff as we thanked retiring Library Director Carol Gray for her 16 years of faithful service and welcomed Deborah Kelsey in September as our new Library Director. Deborah brings unusual energy, vision, and expertise to her new role. She is a past President of the New England Library Association and has held leadership positions at libraries in communities as diverse as Framingham and Medfield.
Look for more changes to come, as well, driven by the strategic plan developed collaboratively by community members, the Library’s Board of Directors and the staff. One project already under consideration: a complete revamp of our heating and ventilation systems, including adding air conditioning.
Whatever the amount, your gift to the Sawyer Free Library is much like a good book – it will have lasting impact and enrich the lives of many. I hope you will join me in adding your contribution to the bookshelf, knowing that your gift is an offering to our community. Thank you for your consideration.

We had the Energy Audit on the 22nd. Chris was our person. He was great. We got alot of free LED Lights and power strips.
We are also getting attic insulation really cheap! It was worth a couple of hours of our time. I’m a skeptical person. This out-did my expectations. JUST DO IT!
