We are now accepting tree requests for 2023 as we aim for 1000 Elm trees planted in 10 years—only 825 to go! So far this year our trees are free, thanks to many generous donors who are paying it forward so Cape Ann folk can plant beautiful elms!
And our dedicated volunteers will plant the tree(s) for you on the Cape Ann site you select. So what are you waiting for? Sign up for a gorgeous elm in your yard and help us by picking a site that is street facing so that we can help recreate the cathedral like “elm effect” all over Cape Ann like so many years ago and fight climate change at the same time!
Donations to help fund our efforts are deeply appreciated. Though we are not yet a 501c3 organization and therefore donations are not yet tax deductible, they will help us do what we do best—buy and plant elm trees all over Cape Ann. Thank you.
This year we, in honor of Gloucester’s 400th Anniversary, we are partnering with Biomimicy of New England to support 400 Trees Gloucester—an effort two plant that many trees in Gloucester over the next two years. All trees requested in Gloucester this year and next as a part of Cape Ann Elms will count towards this special tree initiative. Help us!
Thank you!

Hope everyone is doing well. Well, the weather does not look so good for tomorrow morning. They are calling for downpours. We probably should postpone until April 8th. What do you think?
Thank you all.

WINES
Muses Estate Crispy Assyrtiko, Viotia, Greece
Varietal: Assyrtiko Alc.13%
Northwest of Athens, in the region of Viotia, lies the Valley of the Muses, formed on the slopes of Mount Helicon by the short course of the river Permissos on its way to the sea. In ancient times, the idyllic scenery of the valley was the home of the 9 Muses, daughters of Zeus; it was also the home of Hesiod, one of the greatest poets of ancient Greece, who was born and wrote his works in ancient Askra (modern Askri), a city “rich in grapes.” This is the place where the vineyards of the Muses Estate lie. In 1946, his deep love for wine and the millennia-old winemaking tradition of his homeland led Nikolaos Zaharias to found a small winemaking facility. In 2005, Nikolaos’s grandsons– Nikos, Stelios and Panayiotis– took their place in the family business and created Muses Estate. The Crispy Assyrtiko is a fresh, vibrant wine with firm and crisp acidity seamlessly blending notes of citrus, green apple, and a hint of thyme, with a long mineral finish.
Pairs well with seafood, grilled chicken, goat cheese. $ 39.99
Cherry Hill Estate Pinot Noir, Eola Hills, Oregon
Varietal: Pinot Noir Alc. 14%
The land that makes up Cherry Hill Estate has always been known as Cherry Hill in local lore. Wild cherries have always grown here, and much of Cherry Hills’ land was planted in sweet Royal Anne cherries in the 1960s.Even earlier, the hill was planted with prune trees, which produced succulent fruit. The entire Willamette Valley is known for wonderful soil and a long, moderate growing season that is just right for agriculture of all kinds. Cherry Hill Winery lies directly atop the 45th parallel, at the same Pinot-friendly latitude as Burgundy. It is a 150-acre estate, with 90 of those acres planted to Pommard and Dijon clones of Pinot Noir. This Pinot Noir has supple, vivid raspberry fruit on full display. It is juicy and bright and well balanced throughout.
Pairs well with fish, beef, wild game, pastas.$32.99
Vinicola del PrioratOnix Classic, Priorat, Spain
Varietals: 50% Carinena, 50% Garnacha Alc.14%
The region of Priorat has risen to prominence in the last 25 years, going from being relatively unknown to now producing some of the most highly valued wines in the world. There is a long history of wine production in the Priorat; Carthusian monks from Provence first planted vines in the 12th century. The region of Priorat is named after the priory they built in the hills there. A harsh, continental climate with long, hot summers and very little rain means that vines are virtually the only crops able to survive in the ruggedly mountainous Priorat. The vines are planted on steep hillsides, making mechanized farming virtually impossible – the work in the vineyards is mostly done by hand. The region is known for its unique soil, known as llicorella. Remarkably infertile, it is a dark brown mix of broken slate and quartz that sparkles in the sun. Combined, these factors lead to low yields of incredibly concentrated grapes. The head winemaker at Vinicola del Priorat, Sandra Estevez, is part of a growing movement of female winemakers in Spain. She has made a name for herself by producing elegant, carefully balanced wines that frequently garner high praise. Onix pours a dark ruby color. On the nose, it has aromas of plum with hints of earth and meat. It is soft and lush on the palate with round, firm tannins, and a good finish.
Pairs well with roasted vegetables, sausages, game. $ 24.99
Blue Rock Vineyards Baby Blue, Alexander Valley, California
Varietals:44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 10% Syrah, 9% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec, 1% Cabernet Franc Alc.14.5%
Dating back to 1880, the 100-acre Blue Rock estate tells the story of how European winemaking came to Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley. Italian immigrants brought with them olive trees, vine cuttings, and knowledge of grape growing. The region’s undulating golden hills and idyllic vistas are even reminiscent of Tuscany itself. Blue Rock Winery was first settled by Italians who worked at the Italian-Swiss Colony winery just down the road. Acquired by Kenny and Cheryl Kahn in 1987, the estate maintains much of its old-world character, and its original olive trees that are now over 140 years old. Over the years, Blue Rock has been moving toward a low-input cultivation policy that is reliant upon compost and natural amendments rather than chemical fertilizers. Baby Blue is a blend of the five Bordeaux varietals plus Syrah. Blackberry, blueberry, black currant, and anise are present on the nose and the palate, and the wine has a full, velvety mouthfeel.
Pairs well with grilled salmon, pork tenderloin, meaty pasta. $36.99

And don’t forget to check out what’s new in our beer case. We just got in a new shipment of Maine Beer, with the IPA’s “Lunch” and “Little Whale Boat” leading the charge. We have a rich brown ale called “Brown Dog” and the wonderfully dark but slightly hoppy Robust Porter, both from Smuttynose.

I am writing from Fishing Partnership Support Services. With one of four port office in Gloucester, we are dedicated to improving the health, safety, and economic security of commercial fishermen, their families, and their communities.
We will be hosting a free, two-day safety training for commercial fishermen at U.S. Coast Guard Station, Gloucester on April 13th, and 14th. We invite your coverage of this training in either pre-date sharing of information and/or coverage of the training itself.
Below, I have included a bit more detail regarding what transpires during each day of training:
· Day One: Safety & Survival
This training is designed for all fishermen, including crewmen, to learn or hone fundamental skills. Through hands-on training, fishermen learn about EPIRBs, Signal Flares, MAYDAY Calls, Man Overboard Recovery, Firefighting, Flooding & Damage Control, Dewatering Pumps, Immersion Suits, PFDs, & Life Rafts. Commercial Fishermen who attend are eligible for a 50% rebate off a Lifejacket they purchase after the trainings.
· Day Two: Drill Conductor Certification
During this second day, fishermen dig deeper into what they learned in the Safety & Survival Class, including new information in cold-water survival, helicopter rescues, stability, liability, and emergency procedures. Fishermen who complete these two days of training are Alaska Marine Safety Education Association certified Drill Conductors, which meets USCG requirements under 46 CFR 28.270(c).
While commercial fishermen work in one of the most dangerous occupations in the country, we endeavor to equip them with the knowledge and skills to fish more safely. At-sea preparedness has proven to save lives. Please visit our website, www.fishingpartnership.org to learn more.Â
