City of Gloucester Shares Information on MassDEP’s New Waste Ban RegulationsRegulations Take Effect Tuesday, Nov. 1

Mayor Greg Verga and the City of Gloucester wish to share information on the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s (MassDEP) new waste ban regulations, which take effect next month.
MassDEP’s 2030 Solid Waste Master Plan established an objective to reduce disposal statewide by 30 percent over the next decade. In an effort to reach this goal, MassDEP has established new rules requiring that mattresses and textiles be kept out of the trash so they can be recycled or donated for reuse, effective Tuesday, Nov. 1.
According to MassDEP, approximately 300,000 mattresses and box springs are disposed of yearly in the state. About 85% of this mattress material can be recycled. Approximately 23,000 tons of textiles are disposed of each year. About 95% of this material can be reused or repurposed.
Community members are reminded that mattresses and textiles cannot be recycled through household recycling bins. They must be given to organizations that specialize in reselling them second-hand or repurposing them for other uses. Additionally, as a result of the ban, Republic Services will no longer be able to collect mattresses during regular curbside pickup as of Nov. 1, 2022.

Ways to Recycle Mattresses and Box Springs

Clean mattresses and box springs must be recycled or donated for reuse.
  • The City has hired Raw Materials Recovery Corp. to properly dispose of unwanted mattresses and box springs. Residents may purchase a $40 sticker and disposal bag at the Department of Public Works, 28 Poplar St. Bagged mattresses and box springs should be left outside homes on Thursday mornings for curbside collection.
  • Residents purchasing new mattresses and box springs are encouraged to ask the company they are purchasing from if they will take their old mattresses and box springs.
  • Residents may search MassDEP’s Beyond the Bin recycling directory for organizations near them that accept mattresses for donation and reuse or visit https://tinyurl.com/depmatt.

Ways to Recycle Textiles

All clean clothing, footwear, bedding, towels, curtains, fabric, or similar products must be recycled or donated for reuse.
  • Donate items to the Big Brother/Big Sister Foundation by calling 508-466-4590 or scheduling a pickup online at https://bbbsfoundation.org.
  • Donate items to CMRK Clothing with a Conscience. Request home pickups by calling 508-466-4590 or visiting https://www.cmrkne.com.
  • To find other textile recovery organizations, please visit https://tinyurl.com/depmunirec and navigate to “How and Where to Recycle Textiles” for a list of organizations and what they accept. You also can visit MassDEP’s textile recovery web page at https://tinyurl.com/deptextile.
Residents are reminded that mattresses and textiles should only go in the trash if they are wet, moldy or contaminated.

See The Whales Soon!

Time is running out on the whale watching season and fall is a great time to go. I went with Cape Ann Whale Watch last week on a gorgeous morning. We headed out to Stellwagen Bank and were treated to several whale sightings including some feeding activity. As always, the captain (Capt John) and crew were fantastically informative. One passenger asked me if my long lens would bring the trip good luck. I replied that sometimes that lens is too long because the whales are so close by. It was the case on this trip as well. I just love these creatures but will say farewell for the season soon. I highly recommend trying to get out there! We are SO FORTUNATE to have this right in our backyard.

Chief Edward G. Conley reports that the Gloucester Police Department welcomed four new officers to the force this week, including two brothers who join a third brother on the department.
Officers Andrew Marques, Aaron Aiello and Noah Aiello graduated on Friday, Oct. 7 from the Northern Essex Community College Police Academy, while Officer Dylan Snell was already academy trained and transferred to Gloucester Police from Gordan College Police.
All four officers will undergo six weeks of field training. During this time they will ride alongside experienced Gloucester Police officers as they practice proficiency in skills unique to the Gloucester community and department.

Andrew Marques

Andrew is a lifelong resident of Gloucester and graduated from Gloucester High School in June 2007. After he graduated from high school, Andrew enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Sasebo, Japan working as an airman onboard the USS Denver, taking part in various multi-national operations in the Pacific. In 2011 he was honorably discharged, returned home and worked as a construction maintenance technician at Landmark School in Beverly.

Dylan Snell

Dylan is a lifelong resident of Gloucester and graduated high school as a home-schooler in 2008. He then attended Geneva College, graduating with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in Student Ministry in 2012. While attending Geneva, he met his wife, Carolyn, whom he married in 2012. Dylan and Carolyn have two sons, who can often be seen out on the soccer fields with Dylan as their coach. From 2012 to 2016, Dylan worked with his father Dean Snell restoring antique furniture at The Restoration Works. In April of 2016, Dylan transitioned to working in landscaping with Annisquam Landcare, until he gained employment at the Gordon College Police Department in August of 2016. While employed at Gordon College Police, Dylan received training as an EMT, and then was sent to the NECC-Methuen Police Academy in January of 2017, graduating in July of 2017. From July of 2017 through October of 2022, Dylan served as a Special State Police Officer for the Gordon College Police Department. He also served as a Reserve Officer at the Manchester-By-The-Sea Police Department from Spring 2019 through Spring 2022, when he was hired as a Reserve Officer at the Gloucester Police Department.

Aaron Aiello

Aaron is a lifelong resident of Gloucester. He is a graduate of Gloucester High School and has an associate’s degree from North Shore Community College. He is a Navy veteran. While in the Navy he was assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in Norfolk, Virginia, and was also briefly assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington for one deployment, starting in San Diego and going around South America stopping in Peru, Chile, and Brazil and ending back in Norfolk, Virginia. Prior to joining the Gloucester Police Department, he worked as a commercial lobsterman and fisherman.

Noah Aiello

Noah was born and raised in Gloucester. He is a graduate of Gloucester High School. While in high school, Noah played on the baseball team. Upon graduating high school, Noah attended North Shore Community College and coached a local little league baseball team. Noah also coached a Legends baseball traveling team. After North Shore Community College, Noah worked for his older brother at Aiello Landscaping and Excavating until 2019, when he was appointed a reserve police officer in the Gloucester Police Department and attended the MLETA reserve police academy.

Noah and Aaron are brothers and join their other brother, Alex Aiello, as patrol officers. Their father, Steve Aiello, is a retired Deputy Chief of the Gloucester Fire Department and their mother, Ann Aiello, is a part-time matron for the Department.
“I am excited to welcome four Gloucester natives, who already know our community well, to the department,” said Chief Conley. “These officers are well-trained and well-prepared for the career that is now ahead of them, and they will begin their field training immediately.”

From our friend at Cape Ann Olive Oil

Hi Donna,

It has been decided to cancel Trick or Treat on Main St.

There wasn’t enough participation from the businesses.  Some had staffing issues.  I didn’t realize so many stores were closed on Monday.  Some stores will have candy if anyone comes by.
