WBZ has reported that a message in a bottle tossed from Gloucester F/V Hannah Boden in 1995 has been found in France. It took nearly 27 years for this bottle to be rescued. I found it interesting that the story notes that a dollar is placed in the bottle to entice the finder to pick it up! Story can be found at this link.

Susan Erony is an artist and independent scholar based in Gloucester, MA. Her artwork has focused primarily on history and the human condition, has been widely exhibited, and is in public and private collections in the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, Israel, Mexico and Ukraine. She has worked as a writer, curator, lecturer and teacher, always focusing on the intersection of art and society, and is currently represented by the Matthew Swift Gallery in Gloucester, MA.
A Timely Talk:
Art and politics are strange bedfellows. The first is in the realm of the spiritual, the magical and unconscious. We want art to move us, help us find transcendence and peace in a troubled world. Politics is in the realm of governing, and is about power. At its best, its goals are humane and generous. Susan believes art and politics do not cross, but art has a role in society’s ability to deal with dark times. What is that role?
The Experimental Group is a creative forum, its main mission is to increase public awareness and to foster self-expression by bringing artists together to explore and share ideas that cultivate creative freedom. The EG is encouraged and supported by the Rockport Art Association & Museum.

The Rockport Art Association & Museum’s Experimental Group opens its seventeenth group exhibition, “Unexpected No. Seventeen” at Jane Deering Gallery, 19 Pleasant Street, Gloucester, MA 01930. Works on view in the exhibition range in medium to include paintings, mixed-media, graphics, sculpture, digital art and photography. The exhibition runs from April 2 through April 30. Gallery hours are Friday and Saturday 1 to 5 pm and Sunday 1 to 4 pm or by appointment at 978.886.4582.

Dear Windhover Friends,
With the arrival of the choirs of spring peepers (tree frogs) singing throughout Cape Ann as of last evening, spring has begun! Windhover Performing Arts Center is taking flight this year with wonderful news and happenings. Through the generous support of so many, we have purchased a permanent frame tent covering that will enable live performances at Windhover, rain or shine! I am most grateful for this support, and I invite all of you to come visit our Windhover campus this summer to experience our performances under the brand-new open-air tent. The tent is scheduled to be installed during the first week in May. Once the tent is installed, I will provide an update with photos.
Finally it’s almost here! Quarry Dance X Online
Cape Ann’s signature dance event, Quarry Dance X: The Film, will have its premiere on Zoom in early April and be released on Vimeo and Windhover.org. The premiere features Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre dancers filmed at two private Cape Ann quarries during the summer of 2021. This 30-minute film, produced by Windhover and filmed by Anders Johnson, features original music composed by Joe Mulholland, Professor of Harmony/Jazz Composition at Berklee School of Music in Boston. The Zoom premiere is free to attend. Registration information to see the film will be sent out in late March.
Another Incredible Summer at Windhover
Windhover is proud to welcome audiences back for an array of exciting, inspiring outdoor events this summer. The 2022 schedule of performances, dance company residencies, classes and workshops is nearly set. The Gloucester Stage Company will return for the month of July. The newly formed Lanes Coven Theater Company will present two weeks of performances of Shakespeare’s Macbeth in August. Windhover is looking forward to hosting notable dance performances by Cornfield Dance, Continuum Contemporary Ballet, Queen of Nori Dance, Saving Grace Dance Ensemble, the North Atlantic Dance Theatre and more. I just want to update everyone in the vein of transparency. WordPress, the hosting site for the blog is working to restore all votes that were cast and not recorded. There was a glitch in the matrix and I want to make sure that the absolute right results are the results that we go with. It may take a couple days, it may be done by this evening but I will assure you that before we go forward I will do everything in my power to make sure we have the most accurate results possible before we announce the field of 64.
The great news is that I have a bracket site for the field of 64 that is going to be really fun to work with, that will load easily and you’ll be able to see all the rounds in the brackets as it goes with timers to vote until the next round and a bunch of sharing features. I think you guys are gonna love it.
I was on with customer support from 8:30-11:00PM last night and then again from 2:30AM-4:30 AM trying to get it resolved. This is where we’re at currently:
I am really really sorry about the holdup but anyone that has been involved in our contests or judging in the past knows that I am incredibly passionate about running fair and transparent contest on which people can rely on the results. I’m disappointed by this setback but firmly believe as soon as I get the right results the round of 64 is going to be a blast.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, theSawyer Free Library, this Saturday, March 26 from 2:00 – 4:00p.m. is pleased to present “Forgotten Women.” Local historians Lise Breen and Wayne Soini will discuss the lives of three courageous women who history needs to be shared. Nancy Hanks Lincoln, mother of President Abraham Lincoln, as well as two women enslaved on Cape Ann, Kate Negro and Violet. Join us and learn about these “Forgotten Women” who helped to shape our nation.
This event has been organized and sponsored by the Library’s Gloucester Lyceum.

Here is an example from a screen capture on my phone of what to look for. You will only see the poll ONCE all the photos are loaded. Once ALL the doggo photos are loaded, then the poll pops up. If you click on the photos without letting it all load you’ll probably have issues and not see the poll. This is due to the huge number of entries. I think it’s 159 dog photos need to load before the poll will pop up and that’s a lot of computing power.

Condolences to Ken’s grieving family and friends. How painful that this beautiful family, the type of family that is everything to each other, has lost Ken. Smart. Humble. Joyful. And devoted to his family and Gloucester. RIP.

“Born in Gloucester on May 9, 1941, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Esther (Vautier) Joyce Sr.
Ken was a graduate of Gloucester High School with the Class of 1959. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1964, stationed on the destroyer USS Purdy working as a machinery repairman. His service on the Purdy included operations with other navy vessels implementing the Naval Quarantine in the Caribbean Sea during the Cuban Missile Crisis in November 1962.
After learning the trade during his navy service, upon his discharge Ken worked as a machinist for many years. He first worked at United Shoe Machinery, and then Gloucester Engineering, followed by Sinterbond. Ken then tried his hand at commercial fishing on Our Lady of Fatima, but…
