Busy Weekend — pat morss

As a Northeast Storm is beginning, we have just come off a busy weekend of waves, wildlife and mystery. The waves were swells parading in with beautiful sunlight. The birds and animals followed their near-regular routines. And unusual things were going on at Niles Pond.

Perfect chorus-line choreography
A bit more assertive
Loners, with Boston in the background
Sunset
Setting behind the lighthouse predicts Spring (beat Groundhog Day)
Cold Sunday sunrise with sea fog
And emerald waves
Still feisty at the feeder
Chickadee with a determined look
Niles Pond ice formation, like movement of tectonic plates
Severely damaged iceboat frozen in the pond (sail at left, hull at right)
Deer surprised by the evening march of our turkeys to the trees
Curiosity got the best of them
A few more nibbles before bed

Long Beach seawall to be replaced #RockportMA in the news

Michael Cronin piece in today’s Gloucester Daily Times, “Long Beach seawall to be replaced: Rockport must pay 25% of $2.6M Long Beach project”- here

ROCKPORT — Work to replace more than 400 feet of Long Beach’s dilapidated seawall is expected to start next year.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced last month it will cover 75% of the project’s estimated $2,580,000 cost through Public Assistance Program funding via the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency “to reconstruct a seawall, revetment, and beach access stairs.”

“The 25% matching funds will need to be approved at Town Meeting,” said Rockport Public Works Director Joe Parisi. “It will be included in an article at this spring’s Town Meeting.”

From there, the town will pursue hiring a construction company to do the work. Parisi said design and permitting would begin this year and construction will most likely start in 2022.

The sand came by rail from NH then by truck (carted by Bentley Warren trucking, Ipswich). The staging was from the Gloucester edge.

I find the annual sand migration on Long Beach a fascinating natural mystery. It’s dramatic every year.

Feb 1-2, 2021 Winter Storm Notifications and Updates

PARKING BAN

A snow emergency parking ban will be in effect beginning today at 2 PM,  Monday, February 1, and will remain in effect until further notice due to an upcoming winter storm expected to bring heavy wet snow, gusty winds and minor coastal flooding later today through tomorrow.

Parking is available at all municipal and school parking lots but it is at your own risk. Due to the possibility of minor coastal flooding parking will not be available in the lower lot at Gloucester High School.

The City of Gloucester will give residents ample notice when the parking ban is rescinded to allow for the removal of cars from off street parking areas before parking enforcement teams will begin ticketing and towing.

All residents and businesses are reminded that they are responsible for clearing snow from sidewalks adjacent to their property. Please make every effort to shovel out hydrants at, or, near your homes, and please check on your elderly and disabled.  Your cooperation during this parking ban is necessary for efficient and safe snow removal efforts.

TRASH AND RECYCLING COLLECTION

Trash will not be collected tomorrow, Tuesday, February 2. Trash collection will resume on Wednesday, February 3 and operate on a holiday schedule/one-day delay the rest of the week.

Piggy Bank

Of all the things my boys received for Christmas….it was a very small and last minute gift that has suddenly been keeping them entertained. Who would have thought? They’ve been just a bit obsessed with filling their change counters and watching their bank add up. Suddenly random change stuck in the seat of the car or couch cushions are a bigger score.
