My View of Life on the Dock
Joey, thought you might like this beautiful sky we saw last night. Every Monday evening, the gals at Crossfit Cape Ann work out together and go out afterwards for a great meal and great company! We love our Mondays!

Yella on the Water joins a fantastic line up of seasonal plein air dining options in Gloucester. The inviting new outdoor space and decor of Danielle and Carlo Berdahn’s Mediterranean bistro, Yella on the Water, in the former Morning Glory space on Western Avenue (Stacy Boulevard), beckons on any given sun day. The interior is equally alluring. Owner Danielle Berdahn enlisted some design help from Taniya Nayak and the snappy casual vibe is perfect.
Woburn native, Berdahn has a personal connection to Gloucester. She grew up spending magical summers on Wingaersheek at her family’s beach house. After hearing that fun fact, it’s easy to order the “Wingaersheek” cocktail. We had one brief hour between work and appointments to sample hand crafted appetizers (Hummus Awarma) and spirits. Were we on vacation? A day-cation for sure, thanks to impeccable service and yummy local fare on a hot new deck with a view of Gloucester Harbor.

Summer equals sailing lessons and helping Freddy on the boat. Finn’s favorite job is getting the crabs out of the traps and setting them free to rejoin their friends on the ocean floor. Check out the red eggs on the female he is holding.

We stopped at the new Salt Water Grille for dinner over the weekend and were pretty happy we did. It’s in the old Friendly ‘s building so there’s plenty of room inside for seating diners. The bar area is expansive and comfortable. In fact, I would say the vibe is “casual comfortable “. Our waitress Abby told us there are daily specials and that they are open for lunch. We had chowder, fish and Buffalo Tenders (which were perfectly tender). Thanks Abby!

While filming PiPls, from high overhead came the shrilly distinct call of an Osprey. As majestic in flight as a Bald Eagle, he perused the beach and then circled back several times more. I wondered, is he coming for Piping Plover chicks or possibly the creche of Common Eider ducklings that was sweeping the shoreline for sea lettuce.
Creche of Common Eiders foraging for sea lettuce.
When I returned home I read Osprey pose very little threat to baby birds. Ninety-nine percent of their diet is fish and only rarely do they hunt other creatures, mostly when fish are not available. Commonly called Fish Hawk, Sea Hawk, and River Hawk, Osprey have evolved with such highly specialized physical characteristics to aid in hunting fish that they have been given their own taxonomic genus and family (Pandion haliaetus)
To learn more about Osprey, you may find John J. Audubon’s life history super interesting: Fish Hawk, or Osprey
