Young people have planned a “Halloween Spooktacular” Youth Open Mic Night for those 18 years and younger to share their talents. The event is scheduled for Sunday, October 29, from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM at the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, 10 Church Street, Gloucester, MA.

The emphasis is to have fun in a safe, non-competitive space welcome to all. Please come prepared to share, to listen and to applaud.

Any act, performed solo, duo or in small groups, up to five minutes long is welcome. Performances may draw from a multitude of forms – spoken word, dance, music, song, skits, monologues, magic, poetry, comedy and so on. If you can dream it, create it and bring it!  Be sure to sign up for a spot when you arrive.

For Halloween fun, costumes are encouraged. There will be trivia games and prizes.

Those Sea Cadets are Just Flying Helicopters, No Big Deal

Gloucester’s David G. Ouellet Division of the US Naval Sea Cadets had the pretty phenomenal opportunity to fly with Boston Helicopter yesterday.  Each member took a turn to take to the air with a pilot and even got the go ahead to take the controls.  Unseasonably warm temperatures and a bright blue sky made the day all the more perfect.

In Sea Cadet fashion, the day wasn’t only about the chance to fly.  Under the direction of their distinguished leaders, instructors, and Petty Officers the cadets also participated in combat medical training and gun safety training.  They practiced marching, spent some time in class, and took a brief exam on the material presented to them at their last drill.

I can’t say enough about this program.  If you have or know of a child age 10-17 who may be interested in or could benefit from the US Naval Sea Cadet program do yourself a favor and inquire.

Pet of the Week- Shiloh

10.23.2017 Pet of the Week--Shiloh

Hi my name is Shiloh. The folks here are guessing I have some hound or cattle dog in my mix. I am a happy go lucky kind of guy always  have my tail wagging and pleased to see you. I am 3 years old and medium size so I would be perfect for car rides or outdoor adventures. I am over the young puppy phase and looking for a family to show me the ropes of home living. I have met a few other dogs and I seem to enjoy their company so I wouldn’t mind sharing my space.

Please stop by the shelter to meet me to see if I might be your match!  To see all of the available dogs and cats at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter please go to our website: capeannanimalaid.org.

Thinking Pink

In the “Better late than Never” Department,  Sea Meadow gift shop in Essex was holding a special event yesterday (Sunday) to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.  There were special discounts on many locally made craft items as well as a free chair massage by Jeff Thomas; Reiki (not sure by whom); Pampered Chef items from Dawn Addison Burnham and raffles.  The shop was packed with interested shoppers and supporters of  owner Georgeanne Richards’ efforts.

Although this event was one day only, other events will be upcoming for the remainder of the month to support breast cancer research and we will try to keep you posted on these as we get details.  Thank you Georgeanne, Dawn, Jeff and the others involved for your efforts!

WHITE-TAILED DEER: A COAT OF MANY FUNCTIONS

You never know what beautiful creatures you may be fortunate enough to encounter when chasing winged friends.

White-tailed Deer grow a second thicker coat of fur for protection against the cold during fall, and shed that second coat during spring. The reddish color will give way to grayish brown hairs at the onset of colder weather, providing better camouflage as well. Deer can increase the insulative value of their fur by puffing out their hair. These are probably nursing does because they keep their reddish color longer than bucks and does that have weaned their fawns.
