An exhibition of paintings by local artist Keith Gantos will open in the Marguerite Pearson Room of the Rockport Art Association & Museum (RAA&M) on Saturday, September 30th with an artist’s reception from 2 – 4 PM. The exhibition will be on view Saturday, September 30 – Thursday, October 12.

Keith enjoys painting themes that may cause the viewer to ponder, muse, or chuckle as noted by the title of the work. The detail in his paintings is to draw one closer into it. The subjects are those that are familiar to him, each with a memory & story behind them.

His techniques, at present, lend themselves to a glazing of oil primarily in transparent or semitransparent oil, layer after layer, so that light travels through the layers of color and bounce off the background’s primed white surface, then back to the eye so as to attempt, awkwardly at best, to mimic color as seen in creation. Yet, opaque paint is used as he feels it’s needed.

He has produced hundreds of pieces of art. Painting in oils for 50 years, completing his first oil painting at 10 years of age. He enjoys working in other mediums as well, such as egg tempera, pastel, gouache, and watercolor. His work has been in art shows throughout his life, winning awards, and continues to be in shows as outlined below. His paintings are in private collections throughout the US and in different parts of the World. (One collection has his art hanging next to a Picasso.) His work is also published.

Local Teacher and Students Celebrate Play Publication

I am very proud and excited that a play written by our Director of Performing Arts, Katie Oberlander, and performed by our students at the 2016 Massachusetts Middle School Theatre Festival, where they won a gold medal, has been published by Eldridge Publishing and will performed by two other schools, located in Texas and Indiana, in the next few months.  

I’m also looking forward to celebrating with Katie and the cast/crew of Mastermime in a few weeks.  See information below.

LOCAL TEACHER AND STUDENTS CELEBRATE PLAY PUBLICATION

Harborlight Montessori’s Director of Performing Arts, Katie Oberlander, and her former middle school students are celebrating the publication of Oberlander’s play, Mastermime, with a party at the Beverly school on Tuesday, October 24 at 6:00pm. Students are planning to sign scripts, greet fans and reminiscence about the creation of the original play.

Mastermime is an over-the-top melodrama that tells the story of a notorious criminal who distracts audiences with entrancing mime routines and then disappears with their valuables. The mystery unfolds, punctuated with theatrical cell phone ringtones, love-at-first sight encounters, and a dramatic mime battle! Oberlander wrote the play for her students to perform at the 2016 Massachusetts Middle School Theatre Festival where they won a gold medal for their performance. Eldridge Publishing, a leading play publisher based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, subsequently published the play and schools in Texas and Indiana have upcoming performances planned for November and December.

Harborlight Montessori is a preschool through 8th grade independent school in Beverly, MA, serving communities North of Boston. Mastermime is the second play to be published that teacher Katie Oberlander originally wrote for Harborlight students to perform. Oberlander works closely with her students to create plays that are fun for them to perform and specifically catered to their talents. Cape Ann Special Olympics and Cape Ann YMCA Announce Renewal of Collaborative Swimming Program

Gloucester, MA — Sept 12, 2017 – Cape Ann Special Olympics (“CASO”) and Cape Ann YMCA (the “Y”) announced today the extension of a collaboration to support the second season of the Cape Ann Special Olympics Swim Team. The program will provide weekly training to the CASO swim team in competitive swimming as well a developmental program for athletes developing basic skills needed to participate. Classes began on Sept 9 for the swim team and September 14th for the developmental team. All participants will also receive a Y membership for the year with instruction on the use of the Y’s fitness equipment and other facilities. Financial support for this program is provided by Brace Cove Foundation.

In the first year of this very successful program 22 CASO athletes received extensive training at the Y and 18 of them competed in a qualifying meet held at Boston University earning the opportunity…

 On 10/3/17, Tuesday, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m., Steve Winslow, Senior Project Manager for the City of Gloucester, seeks community input from seniors and caregivers on ways our City and Cape Ann can reach goals of Mass in Motion – including increasing rates of physical activity of all types and consumption of healthier foods.  Those goals will be achieved through efforts to create more accessible and enjoyable options for physical activity, especially walking and bicycling, and increase access to and appreciation of healthy and affordable foods, including locally or regionally harvested foods.

Stopping by for only a few brief moments, a rarely seen and travel weary Spicebush Swallowtail made an appearance in our garden this morning. He drank nectar from the wildflowers, the native Heleniums and Phlox, before departing over the garden gate. We’ve planted a Spicebush just for these beauties, so begged him please come back Mr. Swallowtail, when you have a bit more time, and bring the Mrs. so she may deposit her eggs on the foliage of the Spicebush. The Tootin’ Torquemada of the tenor returns this Thursday! My old buddy.  Mr. Andrew Clark returns for another night of wild digressions and upbeat toons guaranteed to make your choppers vibrate. Been awhile since Big A. has transgressed our shores and I’m looking to have a wild time chasing him around the circle of fifths!

On Guitar, “Big Jack” Ward, Luther Johnson’s longtime pot-stirrer will be holding down the fort from his high stool, and everybody’s favorite thumper, Mr. Steve Bankuti  will wind you up. Lot’s of dancing!
