Delta Terminal and Dunks

I’d like either Cape Ann Coffee or Lone Gull or Willow Rest To Open Up At Logan. Please and Thank You.

So we get through the TSA screeners and inside the Delta Terminal.  With the 2:45AM wake up time a Kate and I were looking forward to a coffee.  Her order- Iced French Vanilla.  She heads to the gate with the two youngest, and my oldest The Bean stays back to get coffees with me.

There’s about six or seven dining options including Fresh City Wraps, Friendlies, Dunks and some burrito place, all serving breakfast.  Line at Dunks is 40 deep.  Biggest line at the other spots is 3 people max.

I go to Fresh City Wraps because they are serving breakfast and ask for an iced coffee, they say they don’t have iced coffee.  They’re serving coffee.  They have ice.   But they won’t sell me an iced coffee.

Go to the next stall, the Burrito place which is also open, serving breakfast.  “Can I get an iced coffee?”

“No, we don’t sell iced coffee.”

But they’ve got coffee, and they’ve got mountains of ice.”

They just won’t put the ice in the coffee and take my money completing the transaction like a normal business would.

We all know and have become accustomed to getting ass raped by shtty airport food pricing not to mention shitty airport food, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why in the world the management of these chains have decided that it’s a good business decision to not take my money for stuff they have at their fingertips even when they could have porked me at overpriced airport pricing.

Meanwhile at the very next stall to the Burrito place Dunks has a line 40 deep and they are twiddling their thumbs at Fresh City Wraps and The Burrito place.

Only thing I could think of was that maybe Dunks has a deal where only they and Starbucks can sell Iced coffee? Could that be? Otherwise the management at Fresh City Wraps and the Burrito place need to be fired immediately for not offering overpriced airport iced coffee when they sell coffee and have ice.

Am I crazy for thinking this is crazy?

It’s close to Kurt’s 20th anniversary at Gloucester High School. Here’s a throwback photo I took in February 2012 at East Gloucester Elementary. Kurt brought the high school students in to the elementary school to lead science and robotic stations for all the kids. He told me then about his approach:

“For too long; students who could memorize facts were considered highly intelligent. In my classes students must learn to apply the knowledge and prove that they learned the topics. This is a different kind of intelligence (kinesthetic – hands on intelligence)  that for so long has gone unappreciated and unrecognized.  Mixing the two types of intelligences (multi level) in a class just makes common sense and great products (student work).”-Kurt Lichtenwald

Grab a coffee and stay an extra moment to meet with Ward 4 City Councilor, Val Gilman, most every Friday morning. Chief McCarthy might be there as well.

And for those wondering about former Plum Cove Grind owner, Meredith Glaser, she writes about her next chapter:

“All is very ok! Plum Cove Grind was a “life style” business. It allowed me to stay close and raise my kids and provide a nice business for the community and beyond( we had a lot of people from all over the world). Thanks to so many great customers.

After 11 years in business, my kids are all grown up so I had decided to look for a buyer.

The buyers were local people (Yay!), and I think they will do well. I’m thinking they will keep the great coffee and lattes and offering of yummy goods. So stay in touch, I’m certain it will be exciting to see what they do.

Say hi to Joey for me.”- Meredith Glaser

BREAKING: RARE RIGHT WHALE CALF FOUND DEAD

A female two- to three-month-old rare North Atlantic Right Whale calf was found dead in Cape Cod Bay on Thursday. She was one of only four calves born this year to a species in sharp decline. Researchers and whale lovers are especially distressed that the calf was a female, as they are the future of the population.

The calf was found north of Barnstable and was towed to Sesuit Harbor. Cause of death is unknown and a necropsy is planned.

As you may or may not have been following, there have been a record number of Right Whales currently making their home in the waters off Cape Cod, not because there are more whales, but because of the wealth of zooplankton. Each spring, Right Whales return to Cape Cod to feed on tiny crustaceans such as krill. Right Whales are the rarest of all large whale species, with only approximately 500 known world wide. They are endangered for several reasons. Right Whales never fully recovered from being heavily hunted during the whaling era. They have a high blubber content, which makes them float when killed, and produce a high yield of whale oil. Secondly, because they feed slowly by skimming at the photic zone of the ocean, at the upper surface of the water, they are vulnerable to ship strikes and to becoming entangled in fishing gear.

The best place too see Right Whales at this time of year is from Cape Cod beaches, according to Charles “Stormy” Mayo, director of the Right Whale Ecology Program at the Center for Coastal Studies. They may be as close as 150 feet from the shore, which is closer than can be seen from research boats.

GMG FOB Dave Moore shares the following from National Geographic. The recent article (March 10) is very interesting and relevant: “How Many Right Whales Do We Miss.”

Three Kids Are Either Going To Be Institutionalized Or Excited Beyond Words Fifteen Minutes From Now At 3AM

My daughters have been begging to go someplace warm for school vacation for the past three years and I’d been unable to do so.  My Kate’s son has never been on a plane.  All three expect that we are going to Boston for a staycation and while they wouldn’t admit it I can sense their disappointment thinking they aren’t going anyplace warm.

Thing is we did book flights to Florida and they have no idea.

As I type this at 2:51 AM the morning of Good Friday we are about to hook up my cell phone to the huge karaoke speaker and place it in the hallway outside their bedrooms where we will blast this audio mashup I pre-recorded.

Have a listen and imagine what it about to go down when they are woken from their sleep to this-

Bevan Worell, winning the “Awesome Gloucester” challenge at GHS on Monday night

Hi Joey. This is my son, Bevan Worell, winning the “Awesome Gloucester” challenge at GHS on Monday night, the 10th. He presented a project idea about creating a classroom with Virtual Reality headsets where students can “go” to all different places they may be studying about, like Africa, the Louvre, or even ” visit” a college choice, all through Virtual Reality. He won the challenge and received $1000 which will go toward the purchase of VR headsets. So proud of my son!!Thank you, Wendy Worell

STOP AND SHOP EMBRACES DISPOSABLE PLASTIC BAGS AND TAKES GIANT LEAP INTO THE PAST

At a time when cities and states across America are working hard to eliminate the scourge of disposable plastic bags, our own Stop & Shop on Thacher Road has taken a flying leap into the past by installing a new bagging system in the checkout lines. My husband and I patronize Stop and Shop regularly and we are both dismayed and left wondering why they have changed to a system that actively encourages the use of disposable plastic bags.

At each checkout line, the old chute that extended beyond the cash register to the bagging area has been replaced by a cramped six-sided carousel preloaded with those horrible disposable plastic bags. The idea is that as an item is paid for, the person doing the bagging can put it immediately into a plastic bag, and when the bag is full they give the carousel a quick spin, bringing around the next plastic bag to be filled.

It’s true that this new system makes it possible to fill bags more quickly and may have been a nifty idea in 1977. But this is 2017, and most of us are avoiding disposable plastic bags. This new Stop & Shop system promotes the use of disposable plastic bags and makes it more difficult to use your own canvas or reusable plastic bag. Additionally, although paper bags are available, they are kept well out of sight.

Perhaps the corporate parent of Stop & Shop – the Dutch supermarket operator Koninkliijke Ahold N.V. – isn’t concerned about the terrible damage done by disposable plastic bags. If you patronize Stop & Shop, please continue to bring your own bags, and ask the baggers to use them. Please don’t take the disposable plastic bags.

A plethora of plastic 😦 😦

SAVE THE DATE FOR THE C.B. FISK OPEN HOUSE MAY 13th!!

How exciting to share that the new C. B. Fisk Opus 148 organ will be available to view at the Fisk open house on May 13th. The organ is being installed at my mother- and father-in-law’s church, Christ Church, in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was so exciting to be at the first meting with my in-laws and Greg Bover. Our daughter Liv has performed at the cathedral and my sister-in-law Amy was married there. I am so looking forward to seeing and hearing it on our next visit to Ohio!

If you have never been to a Fisk open house you are missing a truly exceptional Gloucester experience. The instruments are stunning up close and the artistry and workmanship exquisite.

The first photo is of the scale model of the Cincinnati organ, Opus 148, which has 2 manuals and 22 stops. The second photo is of Opus 150, with 3 manuals and 49 stops and that is headed to Christ Church in Philadelphia. Both organ models are scaled at 1:16 and both will be at the open house.

Aren’t the scale models beautiful and fascinating? I love looking at them nearly as much the real thing.

Celebrate with us

Join us in Gloucester to celebrate the creation of two new pipe organs.

Paprika Grill wants to feature local Gloucester artists

IMG_20170410_190043

Emrah Arslan the owner of Paprika Grill wants to help area artists by featuring solo exhibits. He and his customers will have the chance to see what’s happening in the community, sip some tea and appreciate art in this  casual new hopping Mediterranean spot. Arslan’s art is…the food.

Paprika Grill will select the art. Exhibits will change every few months. Three months is a nice long time to have your work on display. To be considered for a sign up sheet rotation, interested artists should email Arslan with 3 or 4 examples.  He’ll let you know if you’re in the queue. “I keep hearing Gloucester has a lot of artists.”
