  1. Yes, thank you to the DPW Kim! Words can’t express my disgust with this behavior year after year, what is the matter with people?
    No respect.

  2. Carry in carry out is a great idea only if everyone participates. Obviously some
    Trash receptacles are still necessary.
Carry in and out has been a failure since day 1
    In my opinion.

    1. It will never end until people are fined repeatedly and uniformally. Create an anti-littering ordinance and enforce it and just maybe, someday, Gloucester will be known as a beautiful AND clean city.

    2. In speaking with Tony, who has been working at this for over twenty years, he says carry in, carry out is better than what was, although he did suggest it would be tremendous to have a small dumpster at the end of each boardwalk.

  3. Perhaps larger trash cans, or an evening DPW crew to clean up would be a good suggestion. Unfortunately, too many people just think someone else will pick it up so I don’t have to. I’ve seen this at public concerts and even down on the Mall in Washington, DC after an event. Shameful.

  4. Why this indeed! Where is the problem to carry In and carry out. Only few seconds. Everybody is happy to go to this marvellous beach. So we have to respect ourselves and others. Please, take care!

  5. GHBeach has always had a garbage problem. The decision to take trash cans off the beach was made. Now, with solar powered trash compactors, I hope that city hall will reconsider the environmental pollution and install them. Since we know the real dangers to sea life when plastic hits the waters it seems the only morally responsible thing to do now.
The presence of someone patrolling the beach to fine anyone who leaves garbage and trash strewn everywhere would also be warranted at this time. People who are not educated as to the dangers to wildlife that trash presents is not an excuse to keep GHarbor beach clean.

  6. I have the pleasure of cleaning our great beaches in the mornings. Despite how beautiful these Beaches are it is almost unbelievable how much trash inconsiderate visitors leave EVERY day.

    1. Thanks for writing Tommy and thank you for the incredible job you do each and every day. I think Lynne Marchetti has an excellent idea, I have heard this idea bandied about before. As someone who is there every day, what do you think about it?

  7. It’s all about the foundation in the formative years that carry over into adulthood to dispose of in the proper manner! I can tell you if Mom caught me doing this well I would be detailed to DPW and cleaning wherever they needed me! 🙂 Dave

  8. Now add thirty nine 33 gallon overflowing with too many birds on it trash cans to that picture. We had 40 barrels on that beach and 40 on Wing and I think 6 on Niles and 6 on Plum Cove and that is what our beaches looked like before the Carry In Carry Out Program. The people and visitors of this city need to take personally responsibly (Donna A) and look around and take their items with them. It is not rocket science people. I just came back from Conn yesterday and went to a beautiful lake, Guess what Carry In Carry Out and clean as a whistle. Also they had a man cleaning up if there was anything with a fish bucket with a grabber just like we have for our cleanup’s. We need make a change with our workers too a second shift with a presence for all those partiers will help as there is a person there not close up shop at 5 and we are done. Good Harbor seems to be the worse for some reason perhaps you can get to it easy for sure but I also wonder why? Police presence walking the beach and our whole city and maybe too that will bring some respect. Removing the large piles of trash at the end of our beach parking lots made by raking our beaches for over 16 years will help too. The Clean City Commission met with our Mayor Sefatia and also Joe Lucido and talked about all these things and more this spring. I would love to see positive words about the program too, my heart is sad again and every time I clean our city. There needs to be a change. Thanks to all who are litterpickeruppers and those who educate others about Keeping Our Home Port Clean.
