My View of Life on the Dock
Nine Swans a-Swimming
After checking in with my elbow doctor at Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport, I took a drive alongĀ theĀ road to Plum Island. I only meantĀ to stay for a few minutes as I was planning to hurry on back to work on current projects but within moments of being there, a gorgeousĀ Red-tailed Hawk was spied circling around. It was too tempting and I desperately wanted to stay longer and photograph and film but turned right around and headed back over the causeway. Halfway across aĀ bevy of some sort of large white avianĀ creature caught my eye–could it be–yes, it was a large flock of swans! They were feeding on the seaweed and seagrass along the Merrimack River shoreline.
Quickly finding a place to park I got out my gear and with a wide swathe of marsh grass dividing me fromĀ the swans, IĀ tried to get as close to the water’s edge as possible.Ā There were NINE swans in all, two adults and seven almost year-old swans. So much for getting back quickly. And was I ever pleasedĀ with my rule never to leave the house without cameras.
A passing woman from the neighborhood out walkingĀ said that this was the first time she had seen the swans at the river’s edgeĀ in over two years. For my swan film, footage of one year old swans was needed, and here were seven!Ā Every cloud has a silver lining as I never would have been on Plum Island today if not for elbow injury.Ā

The “What Time Is It Mr. Fox” website describes, “The soul of the band is rooted in its songs – poetic, inventive, emotionally naked meditations on love, religion, sexuality, and identity in the tradition of songwriters like Leonard Cohen, Nina Simone, and Laura Nyro.Ā The band also loves to re-imagine classics from Johnny Cash, Prince, and Joni Mitchell to Irish folk tunes and Appalachian murder ballads.”
Their original song “Cold Rain” was recently covered by New Orleans Soul Queen, Irma Thomas, on herĀ Grammy-nominatedĀ CD “Simply Grand,” with the track earning high praise inĀ Rolling Stone, USA TodayĀ &Ā The VIllage Voice.
Not to be missed, the combination of bass, violin, keyboard and vocals presented by “What Time Is It Mr. Fox”Ā Ā offers a unique musical/theatrical experience.

This Thursday: Ta-Dah!! Ms. Diane Blue returns to the Rhumb Line for another fabulous night of dancing. The delightful Miss D. is bringing in a killer band and will have you wincing with ecstasy as you pull yet another muscle whilst trying to act eighteen again.

Obviously Iāll include marine forecasts, live radar, Gloucester tides. Also I was thinking about a direct dial to The Gloucester Harbormasterās office as well as Coast Guard Station Gloucester, maybe a link to the HarborWalk site.
What say ye- Oh Salty Brethren Of The Sea? What would you like to see included?
How about a directory of local marinas and places where transient boaters could stay overnight?

If you read my “Picks posts” often you probably know that I am both a huge fan of staying local….but also completely appreciate a good trip into the city every once in a while. Ā Winter weekends are a great time to head into Boston, grab a nice meal with the kids, and get your full of some Culture. Ā The Mary Baker Eddy Library is a great place for that and their Mapparium is a wonderful learning opportunity….in addition to being beyond cool.

The Mappariumās three-dimensional perspective of the world of 1935 is enhanced by A World of Ideas, an original presentation that features a rich orchestration of words, music, and LED lights to illustrate how ideas have traversed time and geography and changed the world.
The Library is also showing a complementary exhibit, āThe Mapparium: An Inside View,ā featuring letters, documents, and artifacts never before made public. These showcase the construction, history, and significance of this magnificent architectural and artistic achievement.
I may possibly mention MarketStreet a bit too often, but honestly, this time of year you can skate on the outdoor rink, grab a coffee or a hot cocoa, do some super fun bowling with the family, and get a GREAT meal at one of MANY different dining choices. Ā That isn’t even considering the phenomenal shopping (which I rarely get to do.)
