This is the portrait of Catnip Bill done by Isabel La Freniere in the late 1950’s, for those of you who fondly remember the Catnip Man.

Love this! I remember him. I grew up in East Gloucester and I saw him often. I was fascinated by him. This is a great portrait–it perfectly captures the person, the time, and the place.

Excellent one here tradition and legend! 🙂 I was just a young lad then but what I was told he sold catnip bundles around Gloucester in those days…:-) Dave & Kim 🙂

There is a children’s book about him by Ruth Holmberg. It was a favorite of mine growing up. I also remember seeing him many times on the road to Rockport.
