Explore downtown Gloucester through the historic lens of maritime painter Fitz Henry Lane

unnamed-3
The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present Fitz Henry Lane’s Gloucester, a guided walking tour, on Saturday, September 5 at 10:00 a.m. Explore downtown Gloucester and discover what it was like in the 19th century when Fitz Henry Lane roamed the streets and painted the views. Tours last about one and a half hours and are held rain or shine. Participants should be comfortable being on their feet for that amount of time. Cost is $10 for Cape Ann Museum members; $20 for nonmembers (includes Museum admission). Space is limited and reservations are required. Email info@capeannmuseum.org or call (978) 283-0455, x10 for more information or to reserve a space. This tour will be offered again on September 26.

Fitz Henry Lane was a Cape Ann artist, printmaker and world-renowned American marine painter. With his subtle use of gleaming light, Lane is generally regarded as one of the finest 19th century practitioners of the style known as luminism. The Cape Ann Museum’s unparalleled collection of works by Fitz Henry Lane – which includes paintings, drawings and lithographs – is on permanent display in the gorgeously renovated Lane Gallery, a space fully devoted to Lane’s life and work.

John Hickey Brown was born in Hartford, CT in 1955 and currently resides in Melrose, MA. He
attended the University of Hartford and received a BA in English Literature from Charter Oak
College in 1981. He worked in the graphic arts field for over twenty‐five years.
While having no formal art training, he has received instruction from Boston artist, Jason Polins,
and has regularly attended the drop‐in classes and workshops of well‐known Gloucester painter
and teacher, David Curtis.
He is an associate member of the Rockport Art Association and the North Shore Arts
Association in Gloucester. He enjoys participating in local events, such as Paint Essex and the art
auction at the Sawyer Free Library.
He paints landscapes in oil, primarily en plein air. He draws inspiration from the landscape of
New England and from the great tradition of American impressionist painters, especially those
who were drawn to Cape Ann.
“We are so happy to be able to welcome another local artist to our Gloucester branch. This
program has proven to be a very popular one in the Gloucester community – with local citizens
and visitors, alike,” noted Bank President, Russ Cole.
About the program:
One artist’s work is scheduled to be shown every three months; Mr. Brown’s work will be
displayed through October 2015. A reception is planned at the branch on Friday, September 18
from 1:00‐4:00PM to offer you the opportunity to meet John and learn more about his work.

Ron Gilson submits-

Ben Pine’s name was a household word in the days of sail- the illustrious 1920s.  Piney said that the Essex built Schooner Columbia “Was the finest piece of wood to ever show her highs out of Gloucester.”  Schooner Columbia was lost prematurely off Sable Island only a few years after her launching.  She was the best that Essex built and Gloucestermen sailed schooner in the history of dorymen.

You can see from the photo Ron took this morning that on the tombstone of Ben Pine it depicts the beautiful Schooner Columbia.

Come down to Maritime Gloucester (23 Harbor Loop, downtown Gloucester) to celebrate the arrival of the schooner Columbia on Thursday, August 27, at 10am. All attendees will be entered into a raffle for a free 2015 Schooner Festival Hat and Schooner Festival T-Shirt! (must be present during the drawing to win)

Help us welcome the Columbia is proper Gloucester style!

Thanks!!!!
