Overall lobster imports into South Korea are up 375% since 2009, with $74 million of the scuttling sea creatures imported last year.
South Korea has one of the highest seafood consumption rates in the world at 54.9 kilograms per person in 2012, according to the Korea Rural Economic Institute.
There’s even a potential use for all the discarded lobster shells: South Korean scientists announced last week they had invented a USB memory device made from chitosan, a compound found in crustacean shells.
And yes, lobster chips are now available at convenience stores, because honey butter is so yesterday.
