Sweet or Sour

We spied this graffiti on a rock on Straitsmouth Island while hauling lobster traps the other day.

I’m feeling kind of torn about it.  While the sentiment is sweet (right?)….it’s still legitimate vandalism isn’t it…kind of sour?  Or is it just innocent fun?  Maybe it will wash away soon? Or is it there forever…or at least a really, really long time?

I remember judging how far we were in our weekly trips to my grandparents’ house when I was little and living “up the line” by the familiar graffiti on the rocks along Route 128.  Certainly graffiti has its place in our culture, but is a beautiful island sanctuary the right place?

I don’t know.  Thoughts?

  1. I think it is vandalism. I get trying to have a bold gesture for a marriagew proposal, but it’s still vandalism. If it is that person’s property, it is theirs to do what they want. Maybe, if you want to do something like this, use chalk? Then it will wash away after a while? I don’t like to see it. If proposals are acceptable, then other forms of “advertisement” could be…. I’m not a fan at all.

  2. I agree that it doesn’t belong there. And a marriage proposal is between two people…that’s my opinion. No need to deface the rocks. Yes, Donna, Paul’s rocks are meant to be taken home and enjoyed.

  3. My personal feeling are this. “I think there are better way show your love that will stand the test of time and out of the elements. “I feel different about your art rocks Paul, they are temporary in the location left and it’s something to be brought home and cherished by the finder! Like a special rock for them give it to wife or loved one and keep it near you at all times wake to it each day.
