Bluefin Blowout Kick-off Event: Captain’s Dinner

For those of you who may not be “in the know”, the Bluefin Blowout is no joke.  We are incredibly fortunate to have this premier tuna tournament take place each summer in our own backyard.  This weekend, Cape Ann’s Marina Resort is home to this fantastic tournament for the 4th year in a row.

Last year’s winning fish weighed in at an impressive 914 pounds!

This year’s tournament has over 40 boats entered, some pretty fantastic sponsors, and important ties to charities.

While a tremendous sporting event, the tournament more importantly honors the memory of Madelyn Rose Bouley, and proudly supports important funding needs within Child Life Services at Floating Hospital for Children.  The tournament has also joined forces with the Boston Bruins Foundation!

So, come on down this weekend and be a part of the fun!

Charity Film Screening to Support Wounded Veterans

CHARITY FILM SCREENING TO SUPPORT WOUNDED VETERANS

Tickets are now on sale for the New England film premiere of “Darkness and Light,” a documentary featuring conversations with eleven wounded veterans, ten Marines and one Soldier, who happens to be Gloucester’s own, Austin Dorr, a Korean War combat veteran.

The film will screen at Rockport Music’s Shalin Liu Performance Center on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 6:30pm and proceeds will benefit wounded veterans via the Semper Fi Fund.  View the trailer and purchase tickets here: http://rockportmusic.org/thi-wernaus-darkness-and-light/

Synopsis:

Rockport’s very own, Thi Linh Wernau, presents the New England premiere screening of her documentary film,Darkness and Light. In the film, Wernau interviews eleven wounded veterans, largely post-9/11 war veterans and Marines, through the lens of her photography series, “You. Are. Beautiful.” – a project celebrating the human spirit and beauty in all people. Themes around darkness and light emerge in these candid, unscripted and conversational interviews, and ultimately, these themes will tie back to one of the project’s main sources of inspiration: love. The audience will learn more about these wounded veterans, and get to know them simply as human beings. The veterans share messages that may help and inspire other injured veterans. By the film’s end, anyone, military or non-military, may discover a new place of understanding of how to find light within the depths of darkness.

Event Program:

6:30 – 7:00 PM: Artist talk

7:00 – 8:45 PM: Movie presentation

8:45 – 10:00 PM: Reception in the 3rd floor Reception Hall

(all movie ticket holders are welcome to attend)

This event is proudly sponsored by Wernau Asset Management.

GOOD MORNING IN THE GARDEN!

Two pollinator attracting beauties for your garden, bougainvillea and native spiraea, or meadowsweet (Spiraea latifolia). We keep our bougainvillea’s in the basement during the colder months and bring them outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Both swallowtails and Ruby-throated hummingbirds nectar from the blossoms. Our native meadowsweet is a fantastic shrub for creating wildlife habitats. Not only does it attract a bevy of pollinators, it is also a food plant for the beautiful Blue Azure Butterfly caterpillars.

Just another thing for the world to be offended about…..

Target came out with a “Bridal” line of t-shirts and one t-shirt is making headlines.

Introducing the “Trophy” wife shirt:

trophyHonestly, we could get all “feministic” (yes I made that word up) on many levels but I’ll just keep it simple and say;

I’m mad there isn’t a mens line. I would love one for my husband!

Blackburn Challenge this Saturday!

340 or so athletes will be paddling or rowing all sorts of high and low tech watercraft all the way around Cape Ann this Saturday. Click here for specifics at Cape Ann Rowing Club website.

Click on the new updated GMG map of the race to find a good location for viewing the race. Hint: Go to Cape Ann, face water, watch racers go by left to right.
Click on the new updated GMG map of the race to find a good location for viewing the race. Hint: Go to Cape Ann on Saturday, face water, watch racers go by left to right.

If you are on shore:

Anywhere on Cape Ann facing the water is a good view of the race. Obviously a point sticking out will be a better view as the racers cut the corner. Good Harbor Beach on the other hand is not so good as they will just be dots on the horizon. 8AM staggered start and the Annisquam River is good, they will be starting to exit the river by 9AM. Then from there until 2-3PM the fastest boaters will be circling the Cape entering Gloucester Harbor and on to the Greasy Pole finish. But don’t forget to cheer on the slower boats, the SUP boards, the dories, and everyone else who just want to finish the challenge in under six hours.

If you are watching from a boat:

Again, anywhere along the shore of Cape Ann. Please be aware there are many serious racers in high performance craft in this race. That means some are in razor thin craft and your wake can easily flip their boat. Steer clear, view from a distance, and keep the speed down when near these fragile craft.

Click the map, 33 tidbits of new information sprinkled within, and don’t be like Rubber Duck and miss the race entirely. She is paddling the race on Friday morning the day before! Such an airhead.

Chris Stovall Brown joins the Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line. Tonight 8:30pm 7.23.2015

dave-sag-rl-4-3-2014-1 (2)

We’ll provide a musical haymaker this Thursday with the delivery of Mr. Chris “Stovall” Brown to our shores. It’s been a while since Chris has been here and we welcome his string-biting analgesic style as we cavort thru the entire teenage canon of pimply blues and other sordid recollections of days gone by. A blast to play with! Not only that, but the Atomic Clock hisself, Mr. Dave Mattacks, supplies the heartbeat. Expect to hear a lot of bad jokes, rampant diatribes and plenty of whining about the Republicans or the tip jar. I’ll be on base, too, with my newly freed right hand out of the cast (of thousands!) and into a free-range productive baby button, held up by a strong belt of vodka. hit at 8:30 at the Rhoomba Line.

Pet of the Week-Sampsy

sampsy1

Sampsy is what they call me! I love going for walks, toys are cool and I am having great fun romping and playing with lots of other dogs here.  I love the pool and sprinklers…I am a water boy for sure.  For some silly reason folks have overlooked all my cuteness and wonderfulness so now the shelter has reduced my adoption fee to $100 to help find me a home. I can’t wait to meet you and start making memories today! So don’t wait to come say hello to me! For more information about Sampsy or any of his furry friends please visit the shelter in person or check our website www.capeannanimalaid.org for more information.
