Our heartfelt congratulations to Science All Around Us!

With the help of 313 backers, the Science All Around Us team has raised $35,748. All best wishes for continued success!

A note from the Science All Around Us Kicksarter Project Update:

“As we mentioned in our Kickstarter pitch, if we raise more than our goal of $35,000 we will use the additional funds to hire a team to create an interactive and fun website that will allow Collin to engage with kids from all walks of life. This will be a state-of-the-art site that will grow along with the series. It will also keep Science All Around Us alive and growing online as we produce the pilot and find the right broadcast outlet for Collin and this series.”

Antennae for Design ~ How to Apply Gilding Wax

Gilding wax ©Kim Smith 2014 A touch of gold to catch the light

As you may have read, or have heard on the Sunday morning podcasts, my darling daughter Liv is engaged to be married to Matt O’Rourke. We’re so very happy for her and for Matt and are so very excited to have a new member of the family. I’ll post more about the upcoming wedding plans in future posts.

As you can imagine, an engagement is the perfect reason to spiff up a home and I’ve been working like mad painting interior rooms before the onset of the cold weather. Our dining room needs the most attention; the next steps are painting furniture, and making new curtains and slipcovers–these are all things I’ve wanted to accomplish for awhile and I am having so much fun with it all.

This pretty mirror was purchased awhile back with the intent of gilding the frame, and I was able to check it off my to-do list Saturday. Gilding wax comes in a little tub, but is so potent, that one little tub is sufficient for a hundred projects. A teeny weeny bit goes a very long way.

Cover fabrics and tabletops prior to gilding because the tiniest speck will smear into a great smudge.

Very lightly dab only the tip of your brush with the wax. Gently apply to the surface of the frame, lamp, or whatever you are gilding, and then spread with the brush. Optionally, I often use my fingertip for the spreading part. Go slowly and do small areas at a time. It only takes several hours to dry and if desired you can apply a second coat (I never do, one coat has always provided enough coverage).

Clean brushes and hands with mineral spirits. That’s it–no top coat needed.

A Walk In The Woods

P1010086-2  “Woods are not like other spaces. To begin with, they are cubic. Their trees surround you, loom over you, press in from all sides. Woods choke off views & leave you muddled & without bearings. They make you feel small & confused & vulnerable, like a small child lost in a crowd of strange legs. Stand in a desert or prairie & you know you are in a big space. Stand in the woods and you only sense it. They are vast, featureless nowhere. And they are alive.”

Old Friends

I attended my 25th High School Reunion on Saturday night.

I graduated from Hamilton-Wenham back in 1989, and while I attended college in Virginia and have been fortunate enough to travel a good bit, I haven’t roamed far in regards to my permanent address.  From Hamilton, to Gloucester, to Rockport.  And, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So, I get together with High School friends periodically and bump into plenty while out and about, but I haven’t had a good, long night of skipping down Memory Lane and laughing (and laughing and laughing) in far too long.

It’s funny how you don’t realize how much you miss a time in your life and the people you shared it with until you have the opportunity to be in their light again. I had such an amazing time on Saturday and left with such warm fuzzies for how lucky we all were to be such a force in each other’s lives for a number of years. It was so perfect to pick up conversations right where they left off 10, or 15, or 20…or even 25 years ago.

Lots of what we did was giggle, and blush, and piece together fragmented memories of stories that took several of us to unravel.  Who did what? Where? No!  Oh, that’s right! Was I there? Were you there?  And so on.  But then, another thing we did, was share our grown-up selves with each other.  We swapped parenting stories.  Talked about education.  We offered advice.  We shared our losses….our illnesses.  Our highs and lows.  I laughed with old friends….while reveling in my admiration for the grown ups they’ve become.

I get corny that way, for sure.

And tonight I’m finding myself missing them the same way I did that September morning back in 1989 as I left Hamilton to head off and away to college.

With the maiden name of Wadsworth, I’m a bit biased to the poetry of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, but I thought of this poem when I woke up this morning.

The Arrow and the Song

I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.

by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Crosby, Stills, and Nash concerts at Great Woods will always be some of my favorite high school memories….this song always takes me right back to a really phenomenal group of friends.

Framing up Again

Along with my recovery comes more energy, and I’m able to frame more photos at the gallery. On Saturday, I framed “Brace Cove, Eastern Point” and the map “Pigeon Cove, 1884.” I think we’ll be in pretty good shape for the holiday season, as I continue to deck the walls.

Electricity Update #5: Video Walkthrough- Energy Efficiency Assesment and Free Stuff At Mom’s House

The ongoing series of finding ways to cut Home Energy Costs and Be More Comfortable In Your Own Home Part 5

In this video you’ll see the things Kevin From Next Step did to inspect and replace inefficient things in my mom’s house.

If ever there has been something I stand behind as being 100% no-brainer and you’d have to be crazy to not take advantage of it’s this.  Not only is it incredibly interesting, but the immediate money in your pocket saving and free lightbulbs that look exactly like the old inefficient ones that they are replacing. To know all the places where you are losing heat so you can take steps to correct those things.  If you want to have insulation work done or weather sealing to have Mass Save pay for 75% of THAT. To know that you can elect to have any of it done or not and to know you are already paying for it on your electric bill in the line item “Energy Efficiency Charge” and then not take advantage of it.  You would have to say to yourself “That person is crazy to not want to do this.”

I was blown away with what my mom got, how interesting it was and how much I learned about energy savings and teh construction of my mom’s house.

If you want to take advantage of awesome programs available to you right now for zero out of pocket then watch the video and sign up for your own energy efficiency assessment and get a ton of free lightbulbs, power strips, electronic thermostats that will turn down the heat at night or while you’re at work automatically, and efficient showerheads.
