Super Fun Anthropologie Behind-the Scenes Making of the Monarch Store Windows Submitted By Our GMG FOB Mary McLoud Tucker!

Thank you Mary for sharing; this video from Anthropologie is so much fun!!!

Metamorphosis: The Making of Our
Earth Day Windows

It is awe-inspiring to think that the monarch butterfly, a species so small and humble, lays claim to one of natureā€™s greatest spectacles. And yet, their annual migration is considered just thatā€”an age-old phenomenon of epic proportions and, as recent decades have shown, increasing peril due to their declining population. Thatā€™s why this Earth Day, we are paying tribute to the monarchs in our store windows, now home to swarms of handmade orange-and-black butterflies. Hereā€™s a behind-the-scenes peek at their making.

Vickie wants me to choose between Hendrix & The Beatles, but I won’t do it!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock this year, you already know that 2014 is the 5oth anniversary of The Beatles’ appearance on Ed Sullivan. Ā I begged my parents to let me stay up andĀ watch the show — and they agreed. Ā (Kids went to bed earlier in those days.)

It was a thrill! Ā Most everybody on my block was already a Beatles fan and the next day, we were utterly devoted. Ā We all started saving up for the next record. Ā Being the 5oth anniversary of what CBS billed as “The Night That Changed America”, you’ve also probably seen lots of Beatles tribute bands playing around. Ā Next Friday (April 25), Top area musicians come together (yes, pun intended) to help raise money forĀ Gloucester’s UU Meetinghouse as The Number Nines — but this is no tribute band. Ā Rather, it’s three top Gloucester singer/songwriters: 3rian King, Chelsea Berry and RenĆ©eĀ Dupuis, joined by Bostonā€based multiā€instrumentalist Meff and guitarist Brendan Burns withĀ Gloucesterā€™s favorite rhythm section: Dennis Monagle and Joe Cardoza. Ā They’ll perform their own originals plus fresh takes on The Beatles, like this soulful interpretation of “I Want To Hold Your Hand” featuring Chelsea Berry on vocals:

So, we can all agree that The Beatles are the greatest rock band ever, right? Ā “Not so fast,” quips Vickie. Ā “What about Jimi Hendrix?”
“What about him?” I reply.
“You’re always saying he’s the greatest rock guitar player, who ever lived.”
“Well, of course he is.” [Here’s one of my Hendrix favorites]

“So how can The Beatles be the best rock band ever?”
“Oh come on. Ā I can’t choose between The Beatles and Hendrix!”

So the next night, April 26, our friend Jon Butcher is bringing his powerful new show, The Jon Butcher Axis: Celebrating the Music of Jimi HendrixĀ to the Larcom Theatre for their Boston area debut. Ā Check out Jon’s version of another one of my favorite Hendrix tunes:

I’ll be at both. Ā You can be too. Ā You don’t have to choose.

Get The Number Nines tickets here. Ā Get Axis tickets here.

The North Shore United Way and SeniorCare are making the farmers market more available to Gloucester Seniors

NSUW has awarded a Discretionary Grant to SeniorCare in order to allow 60 more low-income seniors in Gloucester to access the Cape Ann Farmerā€™s Market.  Each spring and summer, SeniorCare distributes $25 coupon cards to low-income seniors in Gloucester in order to encourage recipients to shop at farmers markets and consume more fruits and vegetables.  The coupons also support farmers markets that serve low-income residents. Major funding for the program is provided by the MA Department of Agricultural Resources and the Executive Office of Elder Affairs and anyone interested in obtaining a coupon should contact SeniorCare at 866-927-1050.

The North Shore United Way awards one-time Discretionary Grants up to $5,000 to launch new or innovative programs on the North Shore or for agencies with emergency needs.  Margo Casey, Executive Director of the NSUW, said ā€œWe are very pleased to fill in where other funding sources are not able to fully meet this need for seniors in Gloucester.ā€

In its decision to fund the Senior Farmerā€™s Market program at SeniorCare, NSUW recognized this unique program achieves two of the North Shore United Wayā€™s community goals simultaneously: Senior Care meets basic needs and improves financial security by providing coupons to purchase food.  The program also improves health and wellbeing by making fruits and vegetables more available.
