Once a Surfer . . .

surfer girls

I recently came across this old photo of me and my surfing buddy Karen.  We were probably 15 or 16 at the time – wasn’t I cute back then!  Obviously no surf that day, so we were coming in early.  I used to spend 7-8 hours a day out on the water in Ogunquit, Maine when there were any kind of waves – only stopping for lunch and hot coffee to soothe my chattering teeth and blue lips, then going back out until my family stood on shore and waved me in because they wanted to go home.  Now, almost 45 years later, I still don’t want to get off that board.  Can’t wait for summer!  Karen, Brenda, Margi, Becky, Violet, fellow SUP Gals and all lovers of being on the water, do you feel me?

I can only remember one bad experience on the water as a surfer.  It was November and a hurricane had passed by leaving awesome waves in its wake.  I begged my father (I didn’t yet have a driver’s license) to take me surfing.  He took me to Safety Beach in Nahant and stayed in the car, watching me with binoculars.

Surf was running 10-12 feet; my norm was 3-5 on a good day.  It took me a long time to make it out beyond the breakers.  He says I was half way to Egg Rock (probably 1/2 a mile out).  By the time I got out, I was exhausted and had to sit out the incoming set of monsters while I caught my breath, plus I was scared shitless, never having been out in surf that big before.  Three or four big swells raised me high to their crest and then down into their trough.  Then I made the near fatal mistake of turning my back to the sea.  The next wave was huge, and when I looked back, it was preparing to break over me.  There was nothing I could do.  It crashed and sent me flying from my board, and sent my board careening to shore without me (they didn’t have tethers back in those days).  After that, every wave crashed on me, pushing me far below the surface in a maelstrom of swirling water.  I would reach the surface just in time to grab a breath of air, before the next wave crashed, pushing me into the depths.  I was certain I would drown that day. Thank God it was cold so I was wearing a full wetsuit or I certainly would have.  At the same time, the current was pushing me further down shore from where I had gone in.

I eventually made it to shore, collapsing exhausted at the water’s edge where my Dad arrived to help me back to the car.

That experience gave me the greatest respect for the ocean, which I still love passionately, but with the healthy modicum of fear, that we all should have.

Carol Gray has announced her retirement as director of the Sawyer Free Library

Hi Joey,

Would you be so kind as to post the below?

Carol Gray has announced her retirement as director of the Sawyer Free Library, ending a 16-year career that saw the library achieve new heights after a wave of fiscal adversity.

Gray, a Lanesville resident, joined the library staff in 1998 as assistant director and on three occasions during a tumultuous decade served as acting director before gaining the top position in 2007.

David McAveeney, who headed the library’s Board of Directors in 2006-2007, said Gray brought stability to an institution that had slashed operating hours and staffing and nearly lost state certification because of financial uncertainty. “She was the one who kept the place afloat,” he said.

Scott Memhard, the library board’s current president, said Gray’s credits include a key role in creating a new strategic plan, keeping library technology up to date with internet resources and e-books, and broadening the library’s English as a Second Language program to reach more residents.

“Circulation of books, audio, video and other materials is growing, new programs are in place for adults, teens and children, the Lyceum program has expanded, and technology has been kept up to date—all of this done with barely a hiccup or a hitch,” Memhard said.

Gray’s retirement takes effect in April, although with accrued vacation time she plans to leave in March. Memhard said the board, assistant director Freyja Sanger, and library staff will collaborate on “ a seamless transition plan” leading to presenting a new director candidate to Mayor Carolyn Kirk by the fall.

Rockport Music March Hightlights – Don’t Wait — Get Your Tickets Today!

This March, Rockport Music presents performances by the Americana trio Red Molly, folk singer Crystal Bowersox and the Irish Baroque Orchestra with internationally renowned baroque violinist Monica Huggett.

On Friday, March 7 at 8 pm, the Irish Baroque Orchestra (IBO) led by internationally known Baroque violinist and Artistic Director Monica Huggett will perform a program of “Ireland’s Golden Age,” a fascinating snapshot of the musical scene in 18th century Dublin, when composers from all over Europe converged on the city seeking inspiration and patronage.  Ensemble-in-residence at the National Concert Hall Dublin, the IBO perform only on Baroque instruments or modern replicas and seeks to re-create the original performance styles of the Baroque period. Known internationally as one of the foremost Baroque violinists and conductors of our time, Monica Huggett has been a tireless champion of Baroque music for the last three decades. She also serves as artistic director of the Portland Baroque Orchestra and was the inaugural artistic director of The Juilliard School’s Historical Performance Program.  Her expertise in the musical and social history of the Baroque Era is unparalleled among performing musicians and the Irish Times hails that, “the IBO’s playing…was utterly delectable” and that “Huggett showed a fondness for driving into music with a sense of edginess, of danger, of adrenaline-fuelled excitement.” IBO’s “Golden Age” program includes works by Handel, Vivaldi, Geminiani, Pasquali, Turlough Carolan and many more.  Tickets: $39-$58

Red Molly w-guitarsOn Saturday, March 15 at 8 pm, Americana trio Red Molly, known for their gorgeous three-part harmonies blending bluegrass with a touch of western swing, will bring audiences to their feet with crisp musicianship and warm, engaging stage presence. The band consists of Laurie MacAllister (bass, banjo), Abbie Gardner (dobro, banjo), and Molly Venter (guitar). This past year, the ladies were invited to open for music legend Willie Nelson and they performed at the venerable RockyGrass festival in Colorado. Their new CD Light in the Sky spent 20 weeks on the Americana Music Association’s Top 40 radio chart and charted as Folk DJ’s #3 Top Album of 2012. The Boston Globe hails the group’s, “tick-tight arrangements, crystalline vocals and caramel harmonies” (The Boston Globe).  Tickets: $18-$32

crystal bowersox2Crystal Bowersox performs at the Shalin Liu Performance Center on Friday, March 28 at 8 pm.  While best known as a beloved American Idol finalist, Crystal has since proven to be more than simply a gifted singer with soul and dreadlocks. She’s blossomed into a widely respected and strikingly independent artist and songwriter. Since her season on American Idol, Bowersox has released two new records, the most recent being the country/soul accented All That for This in 2013, which opened to widespread critical acclaim and boasted a guest duet with Jakob Dylan. This past fall, she branched out into Broadway, playing the lead role in Always, Patsy Cline. Combining her powerful and dynamic vocals with her remarkably mature songwriting, Bowersox is described as, “bluesy and soulful, with a voice incapable of artifice…” (The Washington Post). Tickets: $25-$39 (Special VIP Meet & Greet $89 including Tier 1 ticket)

Say What? Fire, Ice & Music in Downtown Rockport!

People assume that the off-season in Rockport means that the town is entirely shut down when, in reality, winter in Rockport provides great opportunities to enjoy downtown when it is at its most beautiful with snow cover and ice — all of it reflecting the thin winter light. Plus you can easily find parking, which is never a bad thing.

Local residents and artists Rick Ehrstin and Rob Trumbour have collaborated with composer Andy Tierstien to create Wharf Music: a public art installation bringing together light and music. The installation will take place in the heart of Rockport on Bradley Wharf over four evenings: February 14th, 15th, 21st and 22nd from 6:30 to 8:00pm.

Come get warm by the fire, listen to the music as it washes across the water, check out the installation on the wharf and feel a moment of gratitude that you live in a place where cool stuff like this happens.

A Valentines Day Tweet~ Heart For The Backyard Birds

PrintThe cold stormy weather is making the birds extra hungry this season. Wednesday morning I noticed the birds had completely devoured the food in the birdfeeder I hug a few weeks ago, leaving the sac and plastic try both completely empty.  Luckily I had all the ingredients in the house to make and  hang a new Valentine Tweet~Heart shaped Bird feeder embellished with colorful dangling heart adornments and cupids arrow.  I am thrilled to report that the birds were happily eating yesterday morning as the storm neared Gloucester.

Captain Pete and His Buddy Mike

Hi Joey,
Today is the 7 year anniversary of one of my dads very close friends passing away. I’m sure you remember him, he was very hard to forget. His name was Mike Comfort from Schenectady New York. Dad met him when he would come down to fish at the yankee fleet with his wife Stacey and two step daughters Jaime and Tessah. They became very close, as my dad was like a father to the couple. Mike lived to go deep sea fishing and lobstering with my dad. If you could just write up a little something, that would mean a lot to us and to his widow. She hasn’t been here much since his passing, but she may come down this summer to go out fishing. I have attached a few pictures of Mike living the life he always wanted being a Gloucester fisherman. Thank you.
~Haley Mondello

First picture is mike putting bait and a hook on an underwater camera to watch the fish on the yankee patriot
Second is Mike standing on the stern of the Allison Carol
And third his Mike and my dad “bonding” with a swan docked at captain Joe’s on the Allison Carol
