Breaking News: Good Harbor Beach Baby Harbor Seal Survives

This morning I went for an early morning walk at Good Harbor and discovered this beautiful baby Harbor Seal stranded at the high water mark. Over the next six hours it struggled to survive the world of curious humans. Fortunately, all ended well and the seal was returned to the sea. I’ll post a PSA video later in the week because a great many of the beach goers today seemed completely clueless to the fact that stranded baby seals must be left alone. I had to call the environmental police (thank you Lieutenant Roger Thurlow) to prevent this one man from actually touching the seal, despite the fact that the seal’s breathing was obviously very labored and it was terrified. Later in the morning a lifeguard appeared and kept the crowd under control. I asked for her name but the lifeguards have been instructed not to speak to the media. I hope the lifeguard sees this post because I would like to thank her–she did an absolutely awesome job keeping people from getting too close to the seal–and it wasn’t easy.

Gloucester Stage’s North Shore Fish will touch you deeply

Israel Horowitz’s Pulitzer-nominated “North Shore Fish” premiered at Gloucester Stage in 1986, has since been produced off Broadway in New York City, then all over the world, adapted into a TV movie in 1997 and is back at Gloucester Stage again with an excellent cast, whose performances will have you riveted from the very first scene.

Yes, it’s fun to hear the names of familiar Gloucester places batted about by actors on a stage.  And the fish processing set, replete with real lockers, production line, shrink wrapper and plenty of doors to slam will take anyone who’s ever labored in food service or production right back to work.  Plus, I have to admit I was eager to see Tip O’Neill’s grandson,  Thomas Phillip O’Neill in one of the lead roles as Porker.

While any of these, along with the fact that many consider North Shore Fish to be one of Israel Horowitz’s best plays, would be reason enough go see it, the REAL reason is that Gloucester Stage’s production of North Shore Fish will make you think and feel in ways you’ve never experienced before.  That’s what good theatre does — and this is theatre at its best.

According to Horovitz, “North Shore Fish, to my thinking, is a play about love and dignity in the workplace.”  You might ask yourself, well what else is there?  What else do we really want besides love and dignity and work that matters?  North Shore Fish will help you appreciate what you have and question your priorities.  And you’ll realize that this drama doesn’t happen only in Gloucester.  That’s why North Shore Fish has universal appeal.

If you’re a Cape Ann Resident, you can see this play for a mere twenty bucks this Wednesday or Thursday at 8pm.  North Shore Fish only runs through this Sunday, August 4.  It would be a shame if you missed it.  Call box office at 978-281-4433 for tickets.

Scout Vintage Finds

Continuing my series on second-hand stores in Gloucester after a brief hiatus, today we look at Scout Vintage Finds (186 East Main St., open Thurs-Sun 11am-6pm)!

_Scout façadeThis is a store I’d driven past many times, but never stopped to see. I’m glad I did now!  Karen King, the proprietor, sells a little bit of everything in the area of “vintage items”, but also specializes somewhat in vintage textiles, and millinery (making hats)!

_Scout owner Karen King

Here are photos of some of the things she sells, from vintage items and linens (and things made out of vintage linens) to hats that Karen has made:

Karen and her intern are also very nice folks, who gave me a glass of cold water (it was a hot and humid day when I visited) and chatted for a while, and told me of ANOTHER antique store I didn’t know about! (coming soon in this series).

So, just to review, here are the previous posts in this series on second-hand stores (thrift, consignment, antique, etc.) in alphabetical order:

  1. Bananas
  2. Bub’s Tool Consignment
  3. Cape Ann Thrift Shop
  4. Dogtown Book Shop
  5. The Dress Code
  6. The Eco Boutique
  7. Gabriel’s Antiques
  8. Junque & Disorderly
  9. Main Street Arts and Antiques
  10. Mystery Train Records
  11. The Past Present Shoppe
  12. Pearl’s
  13. St. John’s Thrift Shop
  14. Second Glance
  15. The Sequined Fan

We still have more to go (in no particular order):

  1. Annisquam Exchange
  2. St. Vincent de Paul Society
  3. Thrift Shop at the UU Society of Rockport
  4. Sea Again
  5. Mary Rose Vintage Design
  6. Kalypso’s Gifts and Antiques
  7. Vintage
  8. StudioVo

Look at that! Did you realize that we have 23 second-hand stores in Gloucester and Rockport? If I had known there were that many, I probably wouldn’t have committed to this long-running series, which is taking a lot of time to put together… but I think it’s worth it! I am hoping to put out a table with the names, addresses, hours, and web pages of all of the stores, and maybe a brief comment on what each one generally stocks.

Let me know if I’m missing anyone…

Possibly My Favorite Thank You Note Ever

Dear Joey–

Thank you SO much for dropping off my bitchin’ GMG ballcap at xyz Essex Ave–very sorry to have missed you, and I do hope my ferocious beastie (a brown cocker who, had I left the inner door unlocked, would have met you with a toy in his mouth and a "Follow me! I’ll show ya where she keeps the silver!" wiggle) didn’t take years off your life with his horrible snarling and barking (he didn’t make a peep, did he?!?). Ever since I saw your post that they were in, I’d been meaning to get my lazy ass out of bed to come visit at the dock and pick it up before work, but you, bless you, beat me to the punch. Thank you.

And thank you also for all the hard work and good humor you put into running a blog that is thought-provoking, informative, intriguing and always entertaining– I don’t subscribe to the local paper (I know I am evil in this) so you keep me from being completely clueless about what’s up in our amazing corner of the world. And, you consistently make me giggle– fuck those fuckers who can’t take a little salty language, talk of poon tang, or earnest debates about the best way to cover the noxious effluvia resulting from bodily functions– I’m always amazed at the holier than thou crowd who try to tell you what to do on your blog. Screw ’em all!!

Keep on rockin’, mister. One of these days I’ll get my aforementioned lazy ass to the dock to meet you face to face and grab a lobstah, till then, I am

Yours in Scatological Solidarity,
