Great Bookstore in Rockport in New Location

Have you checked out Rockport’s newest old bookstore? Bullseye Books just moved from Bearskin Neck to a new location on Main Street, near Brother’s Brew Coffee Shop, Shalin Liu Performance Center, and Toad Hall Bookstore — you can get your caffeine, literary and cultural fix all in one spot downtown!

The bookstore has a great vibe, with plenty of flea market finds rounding out the great selection of used books. And the owners are entrepreneurs in more than one way, as they are also the purveyors of the soon-to-be-famous “Flyboy Scarf”, developed by owner Richard Clemens and manufactured right in Rockport, Mass. Check out the website for the scarf HERE and in real life at their Rockport bookstore.

This one looks really nice full screen. The detail in the background is stuff the human eye doesnt see at ths time of the morning but is only captured with the long exposure taken at three different focalĀ lengthsĀ andĀ thenĀ combined so everything is in relative focus.

Video Edit App for iPhoneographers

Following in Father Green’s footsteps, I am sharing my experience with theĀ Video Edit app for the iPhone. The purpose for installing Video Edit is to be able to instantly upload and blog videos for GMG readers.

Prunus cerasifera ‘Thundercloud’

Rendering and compressing are very, very fast in this Ā application; it is designed for ease of use and for speed. There are are no editing transitions, audio overlays, or other extra features included in this app, however that is not necessary when you want to capture, edit, and share in the fastest time possible.

Open Video Edit, click on the plus sign in the lower right corner, chose a clip from your camera roll, and click Choose in the lower right hand corner. Wait while the application compresses the video clip; aĀ one minute clip took about 20 seconds to compress.Ā You can add up to twenty clips and rearrange the clips in any order by dragging the clips in the timeline with your fingertip. Next type in the title, click Done.Ā Click the check mark in the upper right corner, which brings you to the Render To page. You can render to iPhone, Email, Facebook, or YouTube. The 2 minute and 9 second video took less than ten seconds to render to my iPhone and twelve minutes approximately to render to youtube. Done-BOOM! That is as far as I can go on my own–next step is to ask Joey how to live blog it!

Filmed on Plum Street, Gloucester. Liltingly fragrant and a hummingbird attractant, Prunus cerasifera ‘Thundercloud’ is the most widely planted purple-leaf street tree in the U.S.

Why is he so happy singing the blues?

Allen Estes‘ friend Orville Giddings just always seems so happy even when he’s singing sad songs. Ā Orville is Allen’s guest on Local Music Seen this week. Ā If you have cable you can see them on Channel 12 Wednesday, Friday & Sunday (see schedule here). Ā And you can see them perform on Sunday at the Rhumb Line.

“The Leather Curragh” from Lois McNulty

from: Lois McNulty;

“The Leather Curragh”

The leather curragh was used for fishing, and for ferrying cows to other islands for grazing (among the Blasket and Aran Islands.) St Brendan in the 6th century was said to have used a leather curragh to cross the Atlantic from Ireland to N America!
There is a book by Tim Severin titled The Voyage of the Brendan which describes a 1976 re-enactment of this feat. (they made it!)

Men In New York City Apparently Suffering From Horrible Crotch Lowering Epidemic and Skinny Jeans Poll

This trend has reached epidemic proportions.

Fashion forward or just plain ridiculous?

You make the call in the poll below the bottom picture.

(All photos taken in a 15 minute timeframe in and around New York Central Park)

Does Downtown Boston suffer from this disease to such a widespread degree or is it contained to small pockets of the afflicted?

(My boy John McElhenny is giddy with excitement at the prospect of the disease finally catching hold on Cape Ann so he can break out his fine collection of skinny jeans).

This Webcam and more can be found at www.gloucesterwebcam.com

This www.gloucesterwebcam.com local webcam portal project was an idea I had last year to have as many webcams streaming from local businesses or organizations as possible which highlight the incredible vistas that we as people that live and work here get to enjoy each and every day.

The idea was to have the organization install the webcam, have them embed the webcam feed on their own websites as well and have a link to each business website on the Gloucester webcam portal website to showcase their business as well.

Tim Blakeley from Gloucester Bytes provided the initial installation at ridiculously cheap cost because he believed in the project.

Sidewalk Sweeping Day

Please join the Clean City Initiative on our Annual Sidewalk Sweeping Day April 14, 2012 . Sweep all the winter sand off of your sidewalk and into the street for the D.P.W. to come and take it away on your scheduled sweeping day, look for the posted schedule in your local newspaper or online on our cites website. Try to keep it in small piles so the street sweeping machine can sweep it up. Offer to help a neighbor that might need it. Thank you for ā€œHelping to Keep Our Home Port Cleanā€.

Any questions you can call Patti Amaral Clean City Initiative at 978-412-4201 or visit our website at cleancity.us

Julie At K9 Kuts Dog Grooming and Dog Boutique

Those that know me know that I am not a dog person in the least.  Even the smallest,  cleanest most well behaved dogs do not appeal to me.  I’m happy for those of you like my sister Felicia who have become fond of dogs.  I just don’t get the attraction.  But anyway, sister Felicia had been telling me that I needed to get in to do a piece on K9 Kuts for a little over two years now.

Because of my perception of dogs and places that house dogs as smelly it wasn’t high on my priority list.

Boy was I wrong.  This place is like a dog spa.  It’s fancy.  It’s clean.  And it even smells nice.  All of my preconceived notions about dog grooming have been shattered with this one visit.  Check out the video tomorrow!

Follow Up: Memories Of The Oceanside Hotel, Magnolia MA In 1931 From George Krewson III Oceanside Hotel First Floor Plan

Earlier this month George Krewson III sent in this-

My Dad purchased the Oceanside Hotel at Magnolia in 1931. I was 6 at the time. He kept it until 1946. Dad had no idea how to operate a hotel, having most previous experience in the building business. When the 1929 depression hit he was out of building and just happened to acquire the Oceanside by what he called ā€œtrading cats for dogs.ā€ He and Mom learned quickly, and within a few years a guest suggested that they journey down to Thomasville, GA and have a look a winter resort inn there. They liked what they saw and purchased the inn. Each year for the next 11 years they thrived on the resort hotel business–the Oceanside at Magnolia in the summer, and the Three Toms Inn at Thomasville in the winter, Needless to say I cam to really love growing up in the business. Then came WW II and changes in all family’s lives.

Magnolia and the Oceanside, in particular, will always remain as a fond memory.

George Krewson III

and now he follows up with this-

Oceanside Hotel first floor plan

Hi Joe,

In going through some files recently I came across the main lobby/dining area floor plan of the Oceanside Hotel I had scketched from memory about 10 years back.  Odd how things like that can stick in one’s mind.  I hadn’t been in the place since the early 40’s. Some fond memories.
